I'll never forget the first time I discovered Le Tigre, in the backseat of Alison Wipf's car outside of Chris Schwab's house when I was 16. At the time I was barely familiar with riot grrrl -something about chicks being mad and stuff- but I knew that I loved Kathleen Hanna's distinct voice and the fiery energy it emitted. I heard everything she said loud and clear. I just imagined her being so sassy, spunky, independent. It was like if Hot Hot Heat was a fucking punk band, can't get much cooler than that. Ten years later, [...]

The Punk Singer What was I doing in 1990? I'd just graduated high school and was entering my first year of university. I'd been a music fan (mostly the alternative British music scene of the 80's and John Hughes films) and hadn't really delved too much into the indie music scene. The next year, Nirvana's "Nevermind" would be released, grunge would go mainstream and well, the rest is history. Back then I never really gave it a second thought that the music scene had been much of a boys club. So when a band [...]
Tomorrow, Saturday, April 20th, is Record Store Day . Across the nation, droves of rabid music fans will swarm the remaining brick and mortar music retailers, drawn by the lure of in-store performances, special sales and, most importantly, limited-edition collectibles too numerous to count. My head swims as I survey the list of myriad goodies minted exclusively for RSD 2013 . What's on my wish list? One of everything. But that's just not practical. Tough decisions have to be made. Seriously, you'd think I was auditioning for a remake of Sophie's [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music Mike Coppola, Getty Some folks have been quick to label British musician Kate Nash 's recent leap from bubblegum pop to punk rock as a riot grrrl transformation. And while her latest release Girl Talk may share a message of female empowerment with acts like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney , Nash wouldn't necessarily put that label on her current sound. [...]

Goodness at Mural Amphitheatre in 2008 / photo by Rich Britton It’s Friday again so it’s time for Friday on My Mind , our weekly blog post we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. With a sound more accessible than, but derived from metal and punk, grunge took the world by storm during the early 90’s. The way was paved by bands like Green River and Soundgarden at the end of the 80’s and the commercial breakthrough of Nirvana in [...]

Look! It's my 5-pound CD book from the 90s! STFU, Tom Shane. No one wants to hear you hawk diamonds. It’s almost Valentine’s Day and we’re tired of the constant assault that we’ve been under since before Christmas. Anyone out there that really loves their lady (and hates perfunctory holiday obli-gifts like diamonds and those awful chalk hearts that now shout at you in tween-text-abbreviate and make you feel like the Rock Biter from The NeverEnding Story ) oughta’ surprise their sweetheart with tickets to The Breeders’ Last Splash [...]
Let's get this out of the way right from the start. Carmen Villain used to be a very successful model. Her face has appeared on the covers of Vogue and Nylon, and high profile cosmetic ad campaigns. But as the shutter clicks and the palm trees sway, what's a cover girl really thinking? Most models are expected to remain mutely anonymous, mere ciphers of a commercial brand. But it turns out, behind the scenes, Carmen Villain (aka Carmen Hillestad) was channeling her frustrations into a set of songs with a defiantly DIY underground free-rock sound. Now at last, she's stepping off the glossy page [...]

In 2010, Kathleen Hanna expanded her solo project The Julie Ruin to a full-band effort, teaming with her former Bikini Kill bandmate Kathi Wilcox, Kiki and Herb member Kenny Mellman, Carmine Covelli, and Sara Landeau. Until today, their activities have been limited to a performance at a 2010 Kathleen Hanna tribute concert in Brooklyn. But now, as Pitchfork points out , Hanna and co. have released their first song together as part of a series inspired by author T. Cooper's new book Real Man Adventures . The Julie Ruin's contribution, "Girls Like [...]

photo by James Bailey While on her third extensive tour of the United States of the year, the apparently tireless Laura Marling found time to not only have a custom resonator ukulele made for her, but to also write a song on it to promote her model. Appropriately titled "Not Done Traveling", the song is about wearily traveling from coast to coast, so it's probably about Marling's travels this year. Watch a video of her playing the song below: [...]

Earlier this year, riot grrrl foremothers Bikini Kill launched their eponymous new record label, Bikini Kill Records .
