Everybody Taste favorites TV Torso posted a new jam to Soundcloud over the weekend: the sonically rich genre-melting gem, "No Idea Why." Frontman Matt Oliver—who also records a large chunk of Daytrotter's sessions in his Austin studio Big Orange —transmits his vocals with a generous dose of tremolo while pumping giant analog bass synths into this far out vision of pop music. There's a touch of Britt Daniel's raspy vocal delivery and notes of Oliver's former band with Bill Baird, Sound Team, but in the end, TV Torso is unquestionably its own unique beast: a calculated assault of rhythm, [...]

Welcome to FWBA's best-of 2011. This has been such a meaningful year in music to me that it's tough to represent in one post. I'm going to be honest, this took me quite a long time. I wanted to do this year justice because personally, it was a total dream: living in San Diego working with some of my favorite artists, going to SXSW and Lollapalooza, seeing Dave Bazan in stranger's living rooms, Feist play a hometown show, saw tune-yards electrified show at Soda Bar clocking in as one of my favorite performances, watching Zach Rogue and my boyfriend playing [...]

Let me start by saying nothing in 2011 has come close to the affection I still have for my two favorite records of 2010: The Walkmen's masterful Lisbon and Blake Mills' so-good-why-the-fuck-haven't-y ou-listened-to-it-yet Break Mirrors . But that's not to say 2011 hasn't been a great year in music. In fact, I don't think I've ever discovered so many favorite new bands (Natural Child, Stone Darling, Breakfast In Fur, Marisa Anderson, Mikal Cronin, Bare Wires, Future Islands, Braids, etc.) in a single year. The internet has created so many minute niches catered by small communities, micro DIY labels, [...]

" You dark sunglasses won't make you Lou Reed / They'll just make it hard to see " Words to live by from Austin's Bill Baird . A few weeks ago we wrote up a song from Baird's latest (and pretty fantastic) album, Goodbye Vibrations , and now we've got the privilege of sharing the Studio-Perle-directed video for "Your Dark Sunglasses" which, if you can believe it, is a single taken from another upcoming LP. Career is out sometime in early 2012 [...]

![[MP3] Bill Baird: “Hard So Hard”](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3814672_lg.jpg)
Austin's Bill Baird had a relatively promising songwriting career back in the early 20002s when he fronted the off-kilter, proggy rock group Sound Team. Then along came Pitchfork's notorious "blog band" basher Marc Hogan - whose mission, it seemed, was to discredit and destroy any band coming out of the blog circuit by any means necessary (even through terrible, nonsensical, and shameful writing) - and the band's still highly listenable 2006 album Movie Monster would be their last. But Baird left unshaken, going on to his Sunset and solo projects. He's since picked [...]

Los Angeles painter David Phillips recently shot a video for two tracks off Bill Baird's excellent Goodbye Vibrations LP, which I reviewed glowingly back in August. The video is a two-parter, lightly depicting a couple's date in the woods to "We'll Meet Again Someday Soon, or We Won't" in the first half, before devolving into more experimental territory ("...a disturbing testament to 60s and 70s experimental films such as Holy Mountain and The Trip ," says Phillips) in the latter half, along to "Burn, Burn, Burn"—a tale of love-inspired self-destruction. If [...]

Bill Baird - We'll Meet Again Someday, or We Won't This Austin, Texas-based songwriter writes forlorn songs with old country music lyrics, but in the style of The Velvet Underground, tape hiss and all. Case in point: this song, who's beautiful blues seep in like a rattlesnake bite's venom. Grab his new album Goodbye Vibrations digitally or as one of ultra-ltd vinyl with handmade packaging and unique Polaroid. If you're diggin' this, don't forget to follow Bill on Tumblr . The Needle Drop : [...]
Goodbye Vibrations by Bill Baird Back in July , I posted the first track singer-songwriter bill Baird dropped from his upcoming album, Goodbye Vibrations . Well, the LP is finally out, and available for streaming above. Unlike the heavily arranged psych pop pieces Bill has released under his Sunset pseudonym, the tracks on this new album are very simple, stripped down, and vulnerable. Because the foundation here is so basic, Bill is relying on his lyrical prowess a little more than usual. Some lines are winners and some aren't, [...]

After Sound Team's Capitol Records debut Movie Monster was panned by Pitchfork in 2006, founding member Bill Baird hilariously reenacted the review with homemade footage of a dummy being literally stabbed with a pitchfork, thrown off a cliff, and lit on fire. The video is a surprisingly accurate snapshot of Baird as an artist, with its do-it-yourself approach and aesthetic, dead-pan humor, and eye for detail, like the comically dramatic piano score he composed for the video. After Sound Team's breakup in 2007, that DIY mentality became Baird's M.O.: he founded his own studio in Austin [...]

Goodbye Vibrations by Bill Baird Just when I thought my summer would blow by without falling in love with a singer-songwriter record, Bill Baird gets ready to drop a new LP. This guy is a Texan with numerous projects under his belt. The most widely acknowledged stuff he's put out has got to be the psychedelic pop he's put out under the name Sunset . But as good as his sweet and colorful arrangements can get, there's always been something even more haunting about hearing this dude keep a simple focus [...]

Just last month I wrote about Bill Baird's excellent Bandcamp-delivered, woozy, psych-rock single "Wino Strut." Now, the former Sound Team bandmate and Sunset auteur is set to release an 8-song LP August 1st dubbed Goodbye Vibrations . Recorded on 1/2" 8 track and mixed to cassette tape, the album will be offered as a digital download via Bandcamp or on 12" vinyl with handmade cover art. If you dig Baird's music, this an opportunity to procure a seriously rare piece of art, as only 50 are being pressed and each cover comes with its own [...]

Matt Oliver of the great TV Torso recently linked via Twitter to the Bandcamp page of his former Sound Team bandmate, Bill Baird. Waiting for me there was "Wino Strut," a woozy, warm, and ambient bit of psych-rock. This song has seriously crept it's way under my skin. I don't know much about Baird, just that he releases songs under his own name as well as the Sunset moniker, and has a serious knack for experimenting with analog recording. "Wino Strut," uploaded to Bandcamp just last week, was recorded in Austin at Baby Blue Studio by [...]

This Friday (6/3) at Venue 222 you can be part of the inaugural Sunshine Fest , all to benefit the Health Alliance of Austin Musicians (superb organization) and Austin Music People , and to provide valuable exposure for Austin Sunshine Camps -- a group that has made not just summer camps but many many more amazing programs available to disadvantaged youth in central Texas.
