"There's a sucker born every minute" -- David Hannum Yawn...the last few releases in R.E.M.'s 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition series have been extremely lackluster and the band's new EP, "Live in Greensboro", which is a companion piece to the forthcoming Green reissue (out May 14th), doesn't fail to disappoint. "Live in Greensboro" is being marketed as "featur[ing] a handful of performances from the Greensboro show that, due to space constraints, are not found on the [ Green ] Deluxe Edition". While the implication is that this EP [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Music Appreciation Sandra-Lee Phipps, REM HQ It was this week some 30 years ago that Athens, GA band R.E.M. released their first proper studio album Murmurs , kickstarting a career that would yield dozens of worldwide hits, 15 studio albums and James Mercer 's eternal ire because he knows The Shins will never be as good as them. Murmurs is [...]

R.E.M. Fan-Club Holiday Single 2011 by Slicing Up Eyeballs Way back in the pre-Internet dark ages, it used to be the epitome of indie record-geek cool to be a member of R.E.M.’s fan club as the club put out an annual limited-edition Christmas single containing exclusive material. The original fan club releases were vinyl singles which contained (generally) a unique, one-off cover along with a holiday-themed song. The first few singles contained covers of songs by Television, Mission of Burma and Flipper along [...]

R.E.M. announced their end last week and it's taken me until now to ponder that news. That alone is evidence of how much I'd lost touch of a band that, for a good half decade or so, was a fixture in my world. Now that I do reflect on the career of the Athens, Georgia quartet, I realize that R.E.M. was arguably the ultimate college rock act for me and, like a lot of people from that period of higher education, we simply went in separate directions, unable to maintain a once seemingly unbreakable connection. I'm [...]

R.E.M., c. 1983 Last Wednesday 21st September, R.E.M. announced that they are to split, after nearly 30 years of making music together. On their site, the band said, "To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." We wanted to commemorate R.E.M. [...]

STREAM: R.E.M. - "Throw Those Trolls Away" aka "When I Was Young" "Legacy" and "anniversary" edition releases seem to be the latest cash-in effort from the major labels and I've found these discs, in general, to be either spot-on or rubbish (with very little middle ground). Unfortunately, the reissue of R.E.M.'s third disc, Fables of the Reconstruction , falls into this later category. This two disc set includes a remastered version of Fables of the Reconstruction along with a second disc which contains fourteen [...]
The Athens, Georgia, legends reissue its heavily dark third album with some light, previously unreleased demos. Fables of the Reconstruction - R.E.M - Athens Georgia - Folklore - Tales
R.E.M. revisits past glories with an inspired 39-song live set that features new material alongside some of the band's deepest, most enduring album cuts from the '80s.
When drummer Bill Berry amicably left R.E.M. in 1997, it threw the incredibly popular alt-rock giants into a spiral that left them diminished, yet ripe for experiment . Since then, Berry has made only a handful of on stage appearances, most recently stopping by to perform in hometown Athens this past Monday night. Normally, this sort of thing wouldn't be so newsworthy. However, Berry, who retired from the band in 1997 after suffering a brain aneurysm, appeared on stage this time with former bandmates Mike Mills and Peter Buck [...]
This isn't a new question, but it's one of my favorites:

A classic Deserving of a spot on any mix CD Worthy of a download, but not of frequent play Dump it like a hot rock Out of Athens, Georgia, the quartet known as R.E.M. started an unlikely revolution by proving that you can play mainstream rock and [...]
To mark their admission into Georgia's musical hall of fame, REM are going to bring back Bill Berry for a one-off reunion on September 16th. Then he'll be back out, while the rest of them start work on a new album. What sort of parents give their kid a name like Bilberry anyway? Presumably ones who are a little too nervous about calling him Logan. music bill berry rem
