Small Feet — Liar Behind The Sun EP

The Cul-de-sac of Life: An Interview with Bill Callahan

Smog - Ex-Con (Live)
Bill Callahan BY PETER LILLIS Bill Callahan is a thoughtful guy. His forlorn brand of folk rock indicates an author trapped inside his own expansive mind, wandering for years through the darkest metaphors and altered, repetitive memories. With 13 albums under his belt, Callahan-once known as Smog-has an assured voice that relaxes on the sliding scale somewhere between the smokiest Willie Nelson and the smoothest Ian Curtis performances. His language is as sharp as it is blunt, revealing the plain truth through bouts of murky fiction. He's a [...]

Review/Listen: Kurt Vile – Wakin On A Pretty Daze

Review/Listen: Kurt Vile – Wakin On A Pretty Daze A moment of clarity comes as quickly as it goes; more so than any other feeling, it is hard to hold on to the belief that you understand your place in the world. It is said that the strongest moments of lucidity come when you're least expecting it, but with  Wakin On A Pretty Daze , Kurt Vile has managed to extend that moment, and as a result, he has crafted what is the finest release of his career. In just over an hour, Vile has merged his vast songwriting [...]

On Air at KSVR: March 22, 2013 Playlist

On Air at KSVR: March 22, 2013 Playlist It seemed wrong to do anything outsi de a tribute to the late Jason Molina. Since learning of his passing the other weekend, Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. have been dominating my playlists; in particular the former. Given this fact, I focused on the sub-genres Molina often found himself in - folk, folk-rock, and alt-country. Artists like Bill Callahan, Norfolk & Western, Brown Bird and Hayden all made the cut. Check out the play list below. "Simpletons" by The Bats off Free All the Monsters [...]

Teenage spaceship (Smog Cover) - Sleep Sleep

Teenage spaceship (Smog Cover) - Sleep Sleep Sleep Sleep recorded a second cover ( after January’s Convertible cover ) and once again it is great. Bill Callahan has nothing to do with  Spiritualized and Sleep Sleep have nothing to do with Spiritualized but somehow their Teenage Spaceship version reminds me of… Spiritualized. This right here is bad music journalism but  also the nicest thing I can imagine saying about a song, ever.

Bill Callahan to preview new material on spring tour

Bill Callahan to preview new material on spring tour Smog singer Bill Callahan is set to head on tour this spring, starting off with a handful of U.S dates, and it's likely he'll be testing some new tracks live. The formerly lo-fi, now more country-leaning, songwriter will play a series of live dates during April and May, kicking things off in Mississippi before heading to Nashville and beyond. A press release regarding the announcement says that Callahan will likely preview some material he's been working on since 20112s  Apocalypse , his third album under his [...]

Introducing: Eddi Front

Introducing: Eddi Front The Brooklyn-based, Nevada-born 27-year-old artist Ivana Carrescia, formerly playing under the name Ivana XL , was known for her signature lo-fi sounds featuring her voice and guitar. Feeling the need to rework her sound, she chose Eddi Front as a stronger, more gender ambiguous nom de plume . She's now offering up a more sombre, stripped-down aesthetic, featuring eerily aloof vocals accompanied predominantly by piano, with the occasional sparse snare or jazz-drenched ambiance of the occasional horn. Making recordings of herself playing music and singing since she was a child, [...]

Stream McSweeney’s Flaming Lips Radio Show Feat. Ed Droste, Will Sheff, Bill Callahan & More Stereogum Here's another thing that Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne can cross off of his increasingly insane to-do list: Record an hour-long radio drama about the human-head-shaped tumor on the inside of his leg. Coyne teamed up with McSweeney's, KCRW, and producer Richard Parks to put together the show, entitled Wayne Coynes Human Head Shaped Tumor . It's a continuous narrative in the style of Orson Welles's War Of The Worlds , and it features appearances and new music from a deeply impressive cast: Grizzly Bear's [...]

“Wayne Coyne’s Human Head-Shaped Tumor” coming soon to a radio near you Photo courtesy of Jessica Luther While known primarily as a humorous and progressive publishing house (and the force out Beck's Song Reader ), McSweeney's recently commissioned writer Richard Parks to create a one-hour radio special starring Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd of  The Flaming Lips . As McSweeney's tells it , Parks vanished for a few months, no doubt held up in his writing cave, and emerged with a most bizarre and shimmery gem. Bill Callahan “America!” (Official Video)

Bill Callahan “America!” (Official Video) Ushering in the unknown as we prepare to vote for our future leaders, it seems fitting to reflect on our past. In a Reading Rainbow like storybook, the video for  Bill Callahan 's "America" takes viewers down to the bibel belt, underneath the sea of fast food and through the desert of destruction and expansion. "I watched David Letterman in Australia" Callahan sings about the prevalence of American culture abroad as he follows, "Oh I wish was on the next flight to America." The dark distorted guitar slush in the back ground as Callahan's confident tone begins to change, ominously, [...]

Bill Callahan Documentary vs. Real Bill Callahan

Hot on the heels of The Song Remains the Same and Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park comes, unbelievably, another rock 'n' roll movie. This one? It's about Bill Callahan , a man whose electric presence is bound to singe cinema screens across the country. In all seriousness, Callahan, while a generally low key performer, is also a gripping and mesmerizing one, and Apocalypse: A Bill Callahan Tour Film is meant to mirror the interior whispers of his songs via an "impressionistic collection of live performances." It screens [...]
