Sophia Knapp makes pop music that starts off in the cloud of a dream; an imaginary snapshot of a time in space between Tokyo in the 1970s and New York City in the late 80s. On an album with contributions from QM favorite Bill Callahan, "Close To Me" is intimate and intentionally lonely, like finding yourself in someone's poorly-lit living room in the middle of the night. It floats around in a bubble of magic, and vocals tend to sharp edges that catch you by surprise, over a lazy-chic beat that can't help but call to mind Bill Murray [...]

As is often their wont, Mojo magazine have produced another fine cover disc this month, with a tribute to Leonard Cohen's masterpiece of a debut The Songs Of Leonard Cohen plus a 'bonus' of five extra classic tracks from his back catalogue. The array of artists is mightily impressive from acclaimed new soul artist Michael Kiwanuka to Cass McCombs, Field Music and J Tillman recording under the name Father John Misty . The bonus tracks include Dan Michaelson, Diagrams and My Brightest [...]

"I'd rather be broke down and lost in the wilds of Big Bend, any day, than wake up some morning in a penthouse suite high above the megalomania of Dallas or Houston." - Ed Abbey Cold Splinters and Upstate are gearing up for a southern adventure down to Big Bend National Park towards the beginning of next month. It's an area we've never experienced, so if you're lucky enough to have spent a night or two in that " barren, sun-blasted, apparently lifeless, [...]

There was so much really great music that I heard this year, to the point that putting together these lists was quite difficult and time-consuming. But even so, there are still a lot more albums out there that were recommended to me by others that I simply never got the chance to hear, as well as some that I felt needed more listens for me to fully absorb them, so they sadly won't be showing up on here (Danny Brown, Julianna Barwick, The Weeknd, Fucked Up, PJ Harvey, Main Attrakionz, Tune-yards, Yuck…I could go on and on). I'll [...]

I'll never stop loving the beauty of a physical album; everything from the scent of a new vinyl, to the magic of reading the lyrics and seeing the images inside the insert, to the touch of the glossy, matte or recycled paper, and the most important factor - the cover art of the actual overall masterpiece. Here is some of the best album art of 2011. It's easy to see in all of these artists, that there was an actual thought to the structure of not only their music but how it visually sounds. Enjoy! Low - "C'mon" [...]

I'm officially not doing an albums of the year list. There have been so few that I wholeheartedly enjoy, I'd have to do a top 10 that starts at 8. But that is not to say that there wasn't some exceptional new music this year. Click HERE for my favorite tracks from 2011. I'm hoping that 2012 will pick up the pace, but if not, I'll just further recede into the vintage music that I love so much. I hope you enjoy listening to the mixes as much as I like making them. ![[Review/Listen] – Bill Callahan – "Apocalypse"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3954854_lg.jpg)
Tweet Bill Callahan sounds more like the omniscient narrator of The Big Lebowski than a standard singer songwriter on his latest album. Deceptively dubbed "Apocalypse" , the steadiness of the album narrated by warm-voiced Callahan strikes slowly, but with the strength of an end-times prophecy. The mountainous ballad "Driver" opens the album, a song dedicated to the country that Callahan sings about often on this record, that of America. This song invokes scenery from "No Country For Old [...]
