Woke on a Whaleheart - Bill Callahan (Drag City) After being sucker-punched by 2005's A River Ain't Too Much To Love , I thought I'd learned my lesson with Bill Callahan. He's repeatedly been the Lucy to my music critic Charlie Brown, tricking me into thinking his albums can be easily digested. And I'll promptly lunge into them headfirst, forming preconceptions on initial listens that I'll imagine I can adhere to. I'll decide that the songs sound kind of homogenous, that this new effort in no way approaches past glories. [...]

Nobody does Americana quite like Bill Callahan. His new post-Smog album, Woke on a Whaleheart , comes out everywhere next week, but, as Pitchfork reported, us Texans can get it today. Callahan will be at Dallas' Sons of Hermann Hall tomorrow night, where you can no doubt score a copy of Whaleheart along with your pleasantly atonal folk. Bill Callahan - Sycamore Though he doesn't care for the album overall, Sean Gramophone nonetheless had some nice words to say about this song.

Release Date: 04.24.07 It is not totally correct to call Woke On A Whaleheart a debut album, although I guess it works in the sense that this is the first for Bill Callahan without using the moniker Smog. He has dropped Smog as a name, but don't expect a drastic change musically on his latest offering. Pigeonholing Callahan's style of songwriting is far from easy. While many may lump him in alt-country or folk, I find the only description that fits is that of being timeless. He is [...]

(((Powerhouse Sound))) - Old Dictionary (for Bernie Worrell) (Atavistic 2007) (((Powerhouse Sound))) – Oslo/Chicago: (((Breaks))) / Atavistic By this point, I've written about jazz a good number of times, but every now and again while doing my initial research on an album, I come across a review written by a true jazz critic that makes me hesitate to write anything at all. This is the problem I came across while preparing my critical improv for Ken Vandermark's latest group (((Powerhouse Sound))), which is actually two collectives of musicians [...]

Rating: 9.5/10 Modern Music Review Alternative Country The artist formerly known as Smog releases his debut recording under his real name, and offers up an emotive and carefully crafted collection of folk-rock masterpieces. And for this one, i'm superbly exited to tell my feelings. While listening your favorite music, you don't know where you go, the things that you like, problems that you'd

This is kind of an old song, but it's new to me, and maybe it'll be new to you: Gary Haché by Andrew Vincent & the Pirates In a recent post, I wondered where the hell AV's new album is, and then my brother sent him an email, and AV replied that it was coming. So there you go. "Gary Haché" is a nearly perfect song. I kinda wish the vocals were a little louder in the mix, cuz that wicked riff kinda overpowers them, which is a what [...]

MP3: BILL CALLAHAN "Sycamore" ( Drag City ) Officially opting to use his own name instead of his Smog moniker, Bill Callahan offers this track adorably sad, rootsy indie ballad from his upcoming album Woke on a Whaleheart , available April 24. tags: music | mp3 | indie rock | Bill Callahan
The Boston Phoenix reviews Lucina Williams' show, in which she's way too modest: "It's not that often that a 54-year-old woman achieves her greatest success,'' said Lucinda Williams from the Orpheum stage last Saturday, referring to the trajectory of her career. "It's about the talent, about the work. Thanks for letting me into the fold." The Detroit Metro Times covers the Sebadoh reunion:
Although the album opens with a track that is Callahan by numbers ("From The Rivers to the Ocean"), the next couple of tracks reveal a different side of Callahan, one which listeners will surely be able to warm up to.

Bill Callahan - "Sycamore". It's a song that borrows its guitar-line from the song that James, Donna and cousin Maddy record in the living-room on Twin Peaks. And just like that Twin Peaks number it's a track filled with a diffuse and undirected love. Neither Bill Callahan nor James know who to thank for this moment*, for the magnificence of it, for a hot heart on a cold evening. "There's sap in the trees if you tap 'em / There's blood on the seas if you map 'em." Callahan sings crooked platitudes, half-wisdoms, blind man's advice - and do you [...]

Ander goed nieuws [...]
