Naked City's follow up to their self-titled album is a departure from the New York noir that they had perfected. Here, after a 17 minute, moody title piece, all low rumbling punctuated by drum thrashes and distorted screams, is a very straight transcription of Debussy's Cathedrale Engloutie featuring some very lovely, watery guitar work from Bill Frisell. Other modern pieces follow, with works by Scriabin, Ives, Messian, and Di Lassus. read more

Since the 1990s Bill Frisell has indulged in film music. It started with a few Buster Keaton shorts and, like all vices, has progressed inexorably, leading to the inevitable Hollywood movie. But, I hear you ask, isn't this all fairly harmless, and even fun? How little you know. Dark are the roads that lead to the palaces of film, and darker still is the destination. There are cows. Which brings me neatly to one of his earlier film projects, the score to the TV adaptation of Gary Larson's The Far Side . [...]

Bill Frisell ~ What's Going On? (9:46) More: Jaw Droppers There used to be a golf tournament I would cook for on the second Sunday of September. I used to lug down my boombox and play Bill Frisell while I grilled hot dogs and made small talk with the golfers. Bill's music lends itself well to Sunday mornings. To ease into the NFL season. I guess I should have posted this stuff a few weeks ago. Oh [...]

Bottling Smoke Day 2 was a lesson in unbelievable psychedelic soundscapes, free improvisation and avant-garde composition. My day began at roughly 2pm when I walked over to Echo Curio. I bumped into some people I had met the night before and we headed around back to the merchandise booths that were set up in the rear of the building. I purchased some CDs and CD-rs, then headed inside to catch New Fairfield Parks And Recreation and their melding of folky acoustic guitar with homemade signal processor glitch-work. The Alps (a Jefre Cantu project) did not perform, so the next act [...]
So it's rain season and our city is soaking wet. The sky, pregnant with rain and the smell the humidity in the air. The weather goes from a constant drizzle to a flash downpour day in and day out. There's something about the rain that's just simply captivating, rain transforms people. Normally... rain decreases people's IQ, people start driving like retards, they cross highways without looking, suddenly NOTHING else matters except keeping dry! It really is fascinating to watch people's primitive side overthow reason and common sense. [...]

More American Aaron Copland music. This is from Copland's Billy the Kid suite, and performed by Bill Frisell, Joey Baron, Don Byron, Kermit Driscoll, and Guy Klucevsek - not your typical Copland instrumentation or performance - on this cd. The Open Prairie mp3 I remember seeing Miles Davis on television deadpanning, "I've had the same sore throat for 30 years." or something close to that. It was just a clip before cutting to commercial so it wasn't clear to me if perpetually-raspy Miles thought it was funny [...]

This song is from Good Dog Happy Man . It is Bill Frisell. Big Shoe mp3 I live in Tennessee, a state of tax bullies. Our state lives on sales tax, so the greater the percentage of a family's income they must spend to make ends meet, the greater the percentage of their income they feed the state. We do nothing to help the plight of paycheck-not-quite-to-paycheck folks, no tax break on food, no tax-free day once a year. When we had the opportunity to change [...]
Paul Simon performed on Saturday Night Live last weekend and made me realize it's been some time since I heard anything from him. He was having fun too; you could tell by the way he was smiling on stage. It reminded me of all the wonderful songs he has given us through the years. A quick search found that his new album "Surprise" is set for release today, May 9th. His official website also caught [...]
