>> Be Happy Records has reissued the debut "demo" 7" from Philly-based emo superlatives Algernon Cadwallader , and so we are finally initiating coverage of the act with an emphatic "buy" rating. A 2008 re-pressing of the release, originally issued in 2006, sold out briskly. The disc includes four tracks, "Second Rate Machines," "Breath Wish," "Look Down..." and "Sailor Set Sell." Those unfamiliar with the act(which in the excellent video clip above is a four-piece, but at its MySpace lists itself as a trio?) will be surprised to learn it sounds very convincingly like the fabled Kinsella-led second-wave emo [...]

(c) Stephen Dowling Happy Martin Luther King Day, y'all. Hopefully, unlike me, you're enjoying a day off tomorrow. For a few weeks now, 11 apparently, Bill Janovitz has been throwing up a "cover of the week" mp3 on his blog, The Life and Time of Bill Janovitz . This week's edition celebrates "dis Martin Lootah, da King day" and offers up the Nina Simone arrangement of "Little Girl Blue." The accompanying vignette, about an early job in a copy shop, is irrelevant and hilarious. So I'm like (and not like) Sally - [...]

Everyone's got a blog these days. One trend I am particularly thrilled about is musicians who try their hand at regular posting, and use blog technology to share their music directly with the fans. Buffalo Tom ( rad '90s rock band from Boston ) frontman Bill Janovitz has started one of his own and, in a powerplay to capture all the love in my hot-pulsating heart, is offering a free cover each week , along with an interesting backstory about the tune. Well ... some of [...]

Former Buffalo Tom singer/guitarist and current solo artist Bill Janovitz has posted a free MP3 of one of my favorite Replacements tracks. You can download an MP3 of Janovitz's acoustic cover of "Little Mascara" here . The cover is part of his new "Cover of the Week" feature. He's also posted free MP3 of covers of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits. The man's got good taste. You can find all sorts of other fantastic free material on Janovitz's blog here . [...]
December already. How'd that happen? I suppose this means I should start thinking about those pesky year-end lists. While I consider that task, here are some mostly Boston-centric things for your eyes and ears... Buffalo Tom singer/guitarist Bill Janovitz has come up with a way to help him, and us, pass the cold winter months: By sharing a new home-recorded cover song every week. And his

As the leader of 90's college rock band Buffalo Tom, Bill Janovitz enjoyed quite a run of success. He penned some of the most memorable and enjoyable songs of the era (still love "Wiser"). As a solo artist Janovitz was more reflective and introspective with his music. Unfortunately, I haven't come across much of anything from Janovitz lately. So this week's question is: whatever happened to Bill Janovitz?

photo by: selene a. howdy, honkys! the past seven days have been seriously fucked up, but not necessarily all bad, mind you. just shit that i am ill prepared to deal with at this time. anyway, i may be m.i.a. over the next week, but fear not i will be back. in good news, i have an interview tomorrow for a gig that would take me and the family to columbia, sc. i know very little bout the area, but from the research i have been doing seems to be a pretty decent area. i am pretty excited [...]
Been too long since I've done a random, non-mp3 music post. So here's a quick one... The summer touring season, which is traditionally a quiet one this college-crammed area that is Boston (at least for bands I give a damn about), has been surprisingly chock-full of greatness this time around. Can't remember the last time I was this backlogged with songs, thoughts, and links to share. And as it nears its end (I know, say it ain't so... but it is August after all), there's [...]
