BILL WITHERS - LET ME BE THE ONE YOU NEED (DREAMTIME MIX) (MEDIAFIRE link due to server limitations) !!!REPOST!!! Hi Everybody! I got a repost of an older DreamTime Mix for you today. It's the 1977 song Let Me Be The One You Need by American singer-songwriter Bill Withers . You can find the original version of this track on his album Menagerie . [...]

Ever since I first heard the Otis Redding soft-styled vocals of Michael Kiwanuka ( facebook / twitter ) on a City Sessions video he's been on pretty much constant repeat around Walrus Towers. That makes me doubly excited in that this week saw both the release of his latest video for I'm Getting Ready and my first chance to catch him live. At Bush Hall he was opened for by Rachel Sermanni , who was fantastic, but more on her another time. Live he is captivating - as you would imagine - with [...]

If you thought you might be reading Sample Sundays today, I guess you were wrong. No need to worry or fret though, Nab will be back tomorrow with an extra special Sample Mondays to make up for it. In the absence of Sample Sundays, I thought I might try something new so bare with me. If you’ve read the title of this article, “Throwback Sunday”, you can probably guess what’s in store for you this fine evening. If you guessed that I might be showcasing some tracks from way back when, then congratulations you’re correct! Growing [...]

Michael Kiwanuka's music is really impressive. The Withers, Otis references are there. The melodic hat tips to Dylan, etc are there too. That aside, there's something about this artist and these songs ("I Need You By My Side" is one of many gems thusfar from MK), that feels really special. The voice, the writing, the melodies, it's all very moving. Kiwanuka, much like Withers and Redding and other great soul artists, has this ability to pluck/pinpoint/pull at very specific emotions all while securing the listener in something broader something comforting, something reassuring. (like I've been there too, I've felt these [...]
Listen to neo-soul singer, Anomie Belle, layer on the sensual to Bill Withers' classic R&B track, 'Ain't No Sunshine.'

Tweet Are you wondering if we've just stepped into 1972? Are you about to pull out your bell bottoms, fringe jackets and grow your hair out in a true afro? Stop. While the music was pretty amazing in the 19702s, the fashion trends are better left in the past. Michael Kiwanuka has a beautiful voice. I could just end the entry right there, but I'll swoon a little bit more. His voice is full-bodied and the epitome of soul. His music is a new [...]
Now for a complete change of pace, I'd like to introduce you to Michael Kiwanuka (that is if you haven't heard of him already). First of all I just wanna say this guy has all kinds of soul in his music, very comparable to the likes of Bill Withers then and even Mayer Hawthorne now. If either of those names mean anything to you, you'll definitely enjoy the track "I Need Your Company" from his Tell
It's been riot-inducing hot for most of the country this past week, with temperatures today topping out at the 100 degrees mark featuring a heat index of a mere 108 here in NYC. While there are plenty of songs about summer heat that would be appropriate to use, I thought that we'd turn to Mr. Bill Withers for one of the coolest songs I've heard recently, Harlem, the lead track from from his 1971 debut album Just As I Am . The tune, which opens with the line "Summer night in Harlem, man [...]

Tweet This is 100% true: at university, I was officially designated a Sexy Voiced Person. What this meant was that I got to do the voice-over for the student radio station idents. Since most of you probably never heard those, I hope you'll humour me and imagine, for the rest of the post, that I sound like a cross between Sean Connery and the Old Spice guy. I may not actually sound like that. Okay, with that piece of house-keeping out of the way, [...]

Not another acoustic cover of "No Diggity"? You're prob thinking, "b3sci, what y'all doing to us?". Right. But get this, so there are hundreds, thousands, probably millions of campfire heater versions of the Blackstreet classic but Graffiti6's might be the best. Give this version, from the London-based duo's "Annie You Save Me" EP, a spin and you'll see what we mean. No Diggity. No Doubt. A kiss "When they slept together, she almost cried. He was a kisser, and he kissed and kissed. It seemed the kindest thing that had ever happened to her. He kissed and whispered and brought her a large glass of water when she asked for one." -from The Jewish Hunter in the collection of short stories Like Life , by Lorrie Moore [...]
One of our favorite newer discoveries London singer Michael Kiwanuka recently cut this spare, gorgeous version of his as of yet unreleased "Home Again" in Paris a few weeks back. Kiwanuka's talent for melody and lyric writing aside (both awesome), the man's vocal quality is really really great. Withers, Otis, Marvin, Donny, those influences are all there but there's a uniqueness to his voice, an honesty of melodic communication that really separates him from most contemporary singers that cut from a similar sort of cloth. Take a listen below and let us know what you think. [...]

I'm always a big fan of classic's getting remixed. Especially when they are done well. The combo of lyrics with Dubstep makes this track a bit sad, but we all get there sometimes. Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers (Kid MK Remix)
Michael Kiwanuka is a 23 year-old soulful Londoner who has been supporting Adele on tour of late and just happens to sound like Bill Withers (and has covered him too). 'Tell Me A Tale' was produced by Paul Butler of The Bees , a band who know a thing or two about perfecting vintage sounds. Kiwanuka's debut EP is released through Communion in June. We could be looking at a new star here. Tell Me A Tale by MichaelKiwanuka [...]
