By: Brendan Browsing Bandcamp, the Billie Holiday cover art to l'Orange's Old Soul caught my attention. The music is not for everybody - some may find it repetitive - but I love it, film clips and all. You will hear ... Continue reading ’

By now you've no doubt heard Brad Paisley and LL Cool J's thoroughly bewildering "Accidental Racist," and wondered how in God's name we live in a world where this song exists. We guess the sentiment is laudable enough, in its own cack-handed way — ultimately, it's a plea for mutual understanding and racial reconciliation, which is something we can get behind, even if it is couched in curiously passive-agressive language and non-apologies — but boy is it ever both a) weird and b) plain old bad . In the spirit of [...]

If Valerie June had been a roots artist in America 80 years ago, and she often sings as if she was, she might have been a principle influence on today’s myriad retro troubadours, hers a stunningly emotive amalgamation of blues, folk, gospel, soul, Appalachian and bluegrass (including irresistible banjo). She exists, however, today, an artist as modern as an iPod Shuffle, a musician for the generation which carries the entire history of recorded music so casually inside its phone. Like a potent distillation bubbling on a Prohibition-era porch, Valerie June makes self-styled “organic moonshine roots music”, music for [...]

Alexandra Burke said on the flop of her last album, Heartbreak On Hold, : "“I loved that album. I loved the positivity behind it. This new album is very different – I’m listening to Aretha, Gladys Knight, Billie Holiday. I’m being inspired by the greats – particularly those who may have been forgotten by my generation. All I want to do is sing and have people hear my voice. If that means slowing things down then so be it… although I do love to dance!” And on the new album: “I can’t say [...]

One thing we found out about Mariah on American Idol is her vast knowledge of our century's musical catalogue. She was singing almost every other tune on the show.  Well, here Mariah commemorates another diva - Billie Holiday. On the eighth day of Christmas, Musical Fruitcake gave to me...a great old track from the original queen of trouble. Billie Holiday is my favorite singer of old 302s & 402s swing. This track is one that I have been really digging as of late. The horn riffs and choruses mixed with her smokey voice and the classic bass/drum elements really gets me in a good mood. Hope you enjoy it too. [...]

You’ll have to forgive me but I’m about to get shamelessly sentimental here... There are those moments when something you’ve seen or heard or done a thousand times hits you from just the right angle that it becomes new again. When every memory that clouds what it really is falls away and you’re left with something that you’re seeing with total clarity, as if it’s the first time you ever saw it. My musical moment of 2012 was one of these. It was 3am in April, the air was warm and still and the sky was [...]
The recent death of jazz icon Dave Brubeck was marked by a ton of articles (including one on the GMC) and many of them mentioned that he was part of the West Coast jazz movement. Although I think he transcended any kind of label, I thought I'd dig a little deeper into that style of music by featuring someone considered to be a pioneer in West Coast jazz - bandleader Abe Lyman - who also made his mark by composing a jazz standard, "I Cried For You." West Coast jazz [...]
Top 9 songs I listened to on Itunes this year. (Fuck 10? What makes 10 so special?) 9. Billie Holiday - "These Foolish Things" If I could die and be buried in a song, it would be this one. Therefore, perhaps rather morbidly, I guess I listened to it pretty much every day on the bus. 8. Antony and Bryce Dessner - "I Was Young When I Left Home" It’s raining outside. Find a mud [...]

I would guess that most folks of my generation think that a big percentage of modern music stars seem to be a big deal today but are forgotten tomorrow, often because of a lack of talent. But there are exceptions, even if it takes a while for a geezer like me to catch on - like when I first heard Amy Winehouse. Because of her troubled life and senseless death we'll never know how her career would have played out, but when I first saw her video duet with Tony Bennett on "Body And Soul" I [...]

I've probably done 4 versions of this mix privately, ever since seeing Paper Moon a couple years back. I like it as a weekend driving soundtrack, but I just used it last night as background for a game night gathering. There's something fantastic about the upbeat mood of swing jazz that takes me back to car rides with my grandfather, and generally puts me in a good mood. The music is light, yet very powerful; there's a good reason that filmmakers use it to evoke emotions in their audience. If you're looking for a [...]
Wikipedia Critic John Bush wrote that Holiday "changed the art of American pop vocals forever. She co-wrote only a few songs, but several of them have become jazz standards, notably "God Bless the Child", "Don't Explain", "Fine and Mellow", and "Lady Sings the Blues". She also became famous for singing "Easy Living", "Good Morning Heartache", and "Strange Fruit", a protest song which became one of her standards and was made famous with her 1939 recording. WikiAnswers suggests the following derivation of her nickname [...]
