A Southern start to an epic musical journey Last October Joanne and I were driving back from a weekend away with friends listening to the brilliant Port O'Brien album All We Could Do Is Sing on the stereo. Track 3, Fisherman's Son, opens with the line, "I'm doing fine in Alaska" which got us talking about the potential of a great '50 States, 50 Songs' playlist we could lovingly compile for a future road trip. The more we discussed songs about places [...]

As a Hotel Cafe alum and with the 2008 release of new album Firesight , Jesse Baylin is going to be huge. With her first visit to Lawrence, Kansas, Baylin took some (and by some, I mean a lot) of his time there to speak with Joshua about her album, Hotel Cafe and even astrology. Check the interview here: Jessie Baylin : So this is Lawrence, Kansas. Joshua Hammond, Popwreckoning : Have you never been here before? JB : I've never been here. PW : This [...]
Filed under: Around the World Spinner.com : Femi Kuti is dragging a bit, recovering from an illness that marred his otherwise triumphant European tour last month. But speaking by phone from his home outside Lagos, Nigeria, he becomes impassioned, his speech growing faster and his voice sharper... Read more

I can go on about the Big Shitpile getting bigger by the day, but it's beyond depressing to keep kicking that can around - it ends up the free-fall isn't very free. During the day, keep your head up, but right now, whatever gets you through the night, it's alright. John Lennon: Whatever Gets You Thru The Night - 5MB Listening to the magnificent Billie Holiday should bring a smile to everybody's face, which is why she's in this week's Friday Five. Before or since, there's no other like Lady Day. [...]
Haven't posted much here this week. It's been kinda busy, and isn't showing sign of letting up. How the heck did Tony Wilson manage to run a label and work in TV? No marking, I suppose. Anyway, some songs for a cold winter's day... Johnny Cash -'Hurt.' (No there's nothing wrong with me, just something in my eye...) afterword: Johnny Cash's wife June Carter Cash, seen here in the video, died shortly before him in 2003. Someone said that 'she'd gone to get the house ready for him.' I'm sure [...]
A few of us here at Stranger Dance fled the DC area to get away from politics, but even we've gotten caught up this election season. Having said that, I'll be happy when it's all over and we can start moving forward. However, if you just can't get enough of this battle, you can even check out the candidates top 10 songs thanks to imeem. Not surprisingly, Barack's list features some more modern artists (Kanye West, Fugees, etc) along with some R&B classics (Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, etc). We've already discussed McCain's love of Abba [...]

dan monick Download: Warpaint "Billie Holiday" (from the self-released Exquisite Corpse EP) A completely different conversation with Warpaint up now at L.A. RECORD . This ran in the August print issue but we didn't post online til we got an MP3. I think it's worth it. As I said before , I'm really getting into this band. I think Emily and Theresa [...]

Billie Holiday Travelin' Light

I Am Kloot - Hong Kong Lullaby Here's the thing: my "Autumn In New York" kind of feels like a "Hong Kong Lullaby," and as much as I would love to write an apt and poignant Billie Holiday entry, I would like even more to simply send this song into the void. Leaves are already beginning to litter the streets. I am, quite honestly, in perpetual awe of this place, New York. [Buy I Am Kloot , Myspace ]
So, last week this took place, and while I wasn't fortunate enough to be in attendance (thanks, graduation ), you can enjoy some of the finest moments here , via YouTube and some lovely person with a camera. These include the above video - Cathy's cover of Gloomy Sunday , officially my favourite of all gloom-related songs, Lisa Hannigan singing 'The Lady Is A Tramp', and a performance by Conor O'Brien (once of the Immediate) of his adaptation of the poem 'Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep.' [...]

But these great "directional" songs might help them find their way. Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash – Girl From The North Country ( buy ): Two giants singing a reprise of one of Dylan's best songs. Nice music for a Sunday morning. Willie Nelson – My Window Faces The South ( buy ): I really love this one. It's the pre-famous Willie of the 1960's. You know Willie loves his Western Swing, like any good Texan should. Billie Holiday - East [...]
Last week I got the chance to chat with folk pop outfit Old Believers. Nelson Kempf manned the phone but band mate Keely Boyle was at his side and chimed in every once and while. We discussed everything from Alaska to the East Coast. Check out what Nelson had to say and also preview "That's All" [...]

Tired of the goings on in Denver? Do you feel like you're watching an MTV sponored high school pep rally? Do you feel like kicking a hole in your TV everytime you hear the pundits on CNN talk about the convention? Do you frequently ask yourself "Is this the best we can do?" Are you mad as hell and can't take it anymore? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then you may have a soul. In which case, I direct you to immediately listen to today's musical selections. Lester Young, AKA [...]
Back in the early days of this blog, I did a post on Harold Arlen and his contribution to the American Songbook. In it, I included his version of "Stormy Weather" with Leo Reisman's Orchestra as well as one of my favorites by The Reigning Sound. After I posted it somebody pointed me to a link at the WFMU blog that contained a zip file with another 70+ versions. Here's a few of those as well as an unusually jaunty and swingin' version by Dave Bartholomew that I picked up recently. There must be hundreds of versions of this song. [...]

"Since I grew tired of the chase and search, I learned to find; and since the wind blows in my face, I sail with every wind." - Friedrich Nietzsche "If the wind will not serve, take to the oars." - Latin Proverb "If a man does not know what port he is steering for, no wind is favorable to him" - Seneca "Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it." - Winston Churchill "There's no need to fear the wind if your haystacks are tied down." - Irish Proverb [...]
Jonathan Evison is on a roll: Publisher's Weekly, in a starred review, had this to say of All About Lulu, his debut novel from Manhattan's Soft Skull Press: "Evison's debut is a stunner! . . . viciously funny and deeply felt . . ." And Crossroads Films has already optioned it for a film. Jonathan Evison lives with his wife on Bainbridge Island, Washington. In this edition of Snobcast: Rorschach Jukebox Edition, we gave Mr. Evison the chance to score the movie before anybody else does, and threw in a few curveballs. The catch, as always: the subject [...]
This rocks my socks. Teresa Valdez Klein of teresacentric.com was so pissed off with the number of targeted weight loss ads on Facebook that she decided to do something about it. Shelling out $5.00 per day to place her own advertisement, she came up with the above. When clicked, viewers are taken to the Love Your Body Day website.Holly Combe referred to it as 'subvertising', which I think is a great term!It warms my cockles, it really does. What a positive message! And somebody that is actually... Please visit Ceci N'est Pas un Blog for the full [...]
