BILLY BRAGG AND WILCO | MERMAID AVENUE : THE COMPLETE SESSIONS NONESUCH This past Record Store Day saw the release of the highly anticipated final volume in the extraordinary compilation of Woody Guthrie songs recorded by English folk rock guitarist Billy Bragg and American alt-rockers Wilco, Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions . This July marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary American folk singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie, and Grammy [...]
Soundtracked: Matthew Young by Olivia Rafferty on Mixcloud I have been away from the internet for the last couple of days, largely due to spending all afternoon in a restaurant with Mrs. Toad on Sunday and then yesterday lying curled up in a ball of tears fending off the ravages of an almighty hangover. To the untrained eye it might even look like I have been entirely slacking off, but that isn't entirely true On Saturday I managed to find time [...]
Well, after a marvelous summer in San Francisco, I'm packing my bags and heading back to Brooklyn. I love Brooklyn, I really do. But I'm a California girl at heart, and the West Coast is imprinted on me like DNA. So, my move back east comes with an onslaught of contradictory emotions — excitement and sadness, elation, and heartbreak. It's hard feeling such a pull to two places, but I know I can count on my handy music library to help me sort through the confusion. While this playlist veers a little more on [...]

top of the morning. was perusing an older hard drive of mine the other day, and ran across a folder simply labeled "avenue." decided to click on it, and well what the fuck? it was the mermaid avenue demos, which as it turns out i have never heard. my labeling leaves something to be desired, or at least it did back then. so, anyway, here ya go. sorry no zip for right now. maybe when i get home later today ill upload one. 1. she came along to me 2. all you fascists [...]

I am learning to despise hotel internet. Whether I book myself and end up staying in a fucking Travelodge or Mrs. Toad books and we end up staying on one of the larger guest suites at Buckingham fucking Palace, absolutely all of them have such risibly bad internet connections that recording a podcast leaves me tearing my fucking hair out. I couldn't even get the online image editor to load properly, so the image is that rather pathetic, borderline clipart stinker you see in the top right hand corner. Dreadful. My art teachers would be justifiably disappointed. [...]

Tom Williams and The Boat ALBUM REVIEW: Tom Williams and The Boat's record Too Slow [Mud Hut Digital] is actually like a nice cruise of genres between the righteousnesses campfire vamping of Nick Cave and the jagged orchestrated edges of David Gedge's guitar play. Floating at sea are the sounds of our greatest minds in this vessel. Tom Williams rants are not all about maritime trips at all. Trust me I'd be the first one over board who would be hurling and begging for the shore line. [...]

So, after work tonight, what to do... there's James Yorkston at Pilrig St. Paul's, or the Panda Su EP launch at Sneaky Pete's, or Ringo Deathstarr at Cabaret Voltaire. Then tomorrow it's either the Conquering Animal Sound album launch or Come on Gang's final gig (and album launch), also at Pilrig St. Paul's. It's almost like living in Glasgow or London. I'm also - not that I mean to show my age - rather excited about the number of green shoots in the garden at the moment. Our approach to gardening is more than a little haphazard, but [...]

Billy Bragg and Wilco Walt Whitman’s Niece THROWBACK THURSDAYS.. This jam is my “Bad Moon Rising”. If you haven’t listened to Billy Bragg and Wilco’s 1998 collab album Mermaid Avenue , you are not winning at life. Get it now. Long live British rock…

Billy Bragg & Wilco: Walt Whitman's Niece [ purchase ] As a listener and blogger, I tend to favor a focus on history, production and musicality over text. From that perspective, today's song is easy to present: penned by Woody Guthrie fifty years before it was set to music and recorded by Billy Bragg and Wilco on their Grammy-nominated Mermaid Avenue collection, Walt Whitman's Niece is a fun rockabilly stomper that recounts a based-on-fact narrative of a night with a seaman friend and some girls. [...]

Woody Guthrie was born today in 1912 in Okemah, Oklahoma . He needs no introduction. I imagine his music has seeped into the lives of nearly every artist I've ever featured on Carnival Saloon. So, to mark what would have been his 98th birthday, here are Woody Guthrie songs by four of my favourites. MP3: Bob Dylan - This Land is Your Land (live) "Woody Guthrie tore everything in his path to pieces. For me it was an epiphany, like some heavy anchor had just plunged into the [...]
My favorite songs are the ones you feel in your bones, the ones that bubble up effervescently with that passion which has to explode out your extremities in the form of claps, stomps, and other forms of bodily percussion. A few months ago, fellow blogger Adrian and I started knocking around the idea of a Stomp/Clap mix with all the best samples of these songs. This has been an absolute joy to assemble (with suggestions from you guys) and is the perfect late-Spring soundtrack. While everything outside is coming back to life, these songs [...]

I can’t exactly say why this feels like a good song for today, but it does. It’s kind of grey outside. Did I tell you I might be moving to California in about a year? Where I might be going, every day is a beautiful one. I can’t imagine what this might do for my mood. Good things, I suspect. Still, I have to wonder if I might miss the seasons, the overcast mornings, the weather giving me permission, as a coworker aptly noted yesterday, “to feel sad.” This came out in 1998, when I was just [...]

Opening day is more than a Holiday in Saint Louis it's a holy day. The Cardinals are more than just a sports team in this city, they're an institution. I may be living behind enemy lines (I'm a Brewers fan - at least I'm not a Cubs fan), but I enjoy the obsessive (bordering on absurd) fandom that exists in the gateway to the west. To celebrate this year's opening day I'd like to suggest a little baseball-themed music for [...]

Hooray for us - possibly the vilest and least romantic Valentine's Day Podcast yet! And before anyone whinges about that picture, go to fucking Wikipedia and complain, because that's where we bloody got it from. I know! Scandalous! Someone should complain. So erm, yes. I don't think we left anyone unoffended this year. I sincerely hope not because I don't like to think of people out there nurturing an anticipated false outrage complex only to be let down. We do not like romance, we do not like being told when to have fun by [...]
