I can't think of a better way to say that I'm leaving for the Voodoo Music Festival than by letting Sunday's headliners say it. If Wilco doesn't play this song, they're missing a big opportunity. This song is off Billy Bragg and Wilco's Mermaid Avenue, which has them paired up ...
7 Means of Movement: Flying Ray and Bob, Air Travel. Eddie Floyd, Big Bird. Frank Sinatra, Come Fly With Me. Away and away the aeroplane shot, till it was nothing but a bright spark; an aspiration; a concentration; a symbol (so it seemed to Mr. Bentley, vigorously rolling his strip of turf at Greenwich) of man's soul; of his determination, thought Mr. Bentley, sweeping round the cedar tree,

Celebrate your Labor Day weekend with one of labor's greatest heroes, Woody Guthrie . The first two MP3s are original recordings by Guthrie, while the third is a Billy Bragg and Wilco recording of Guthrie lyrics that had never been turned into a song, part of the Mermaid Avenue series of music the bands did. MP3 : Worried Man Blues by Woody Guthrie MP3 : Jesus Christ by Woody Guthrie MP3 : All You Fascists by Billy Bragg and Wilco (Guthrie lyrics)

It's time for another mix, and the concept for this one is pretty simple. It includes songs that have the name of a city or state in the title. While putting this mix together, it surprised me the number of songs that are written about cities and states. I'm sure a lot of songs are born because of something that stands out to the songwriter about the cities and states that they pass through as they tour across the country. Also, a lot of songs are written about the hometowns or states that they grew up [...]

Once again, sad news - the show didn't archive again this week, so unfortunately you won't be able to hear the two hours I spent on the air with All We Seabees . Really, really unfortunately, because we definitely spent a good chunk of the show getting to know the band, and I feel like we chatted about everything - what it was like to move into the Nashville music scene, the new material the band just finished playing, favorite bands in Nashville and favorite releases so far this year, and lots, lots more. [...]
Bottom of the Hudson - "Rusty Zippers". We've never shared a meal, or had a conversation. I've never stood and watched them play their songs. Bottom of the Hudson were, and are, strangers to me. I cannot even name their members, without looking. On June 29th 2007, outside Clinton, North Carolina, one of the tires blew out in a van carrying Bottom of the Hudson across the I-40. Their bassist, Trevor Butler, died in the accident. Their drummer, Greg Lytle, is in intensive care. It seems tasteless to write a eulogy to a person you never knew. An obituary - [...]
I couldn't think of what to post, so I had my wife pick songs. Better post next week. --- Leonard Nimoy - "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" Old 97s - "Designs on You" Billy Bragg and Wilco - "California Stars" Eef Barzelay - "I Wasn't Really Drunk"

this could very well be my favorite song ever. the lyrics were penned by woody guthrie , the songwriter probably best known for his folk song " this land is your land ". guthrie was a prolific writer whose experiences in life imparted on him the ability to identify and resonate with the every-man. his writings tended to focus on the social and political plight of the disenfranchised, with particular attention paid to his desire to kill fascists with his guitar. however, "remember the mountain bed" is, at its core, a tale of love, and more beautiful [...]
Part One Part Two Once again, Countdown 's Keith Olbermann is right on target with his latest special comment, regarding Senator John Kerry 's recent botched attempt at humor & the media storm that has blow it all out of proportion. John Amato's Crooks & Liars has the video as-per-usual, just [...]

Editor's Note: This post was written by Neil Thompson of San Francisco's Low Red Land . It is part of a series of posts that the band will be writing for the site today. At the bottom of the page, you can find the links to the rest. When we (Ben, Mark, Adam, and me) were driving here, I could feel the east grasp behind me. The same cities dangling their fingers, their old faces and buildings, their beaten roads. And then, the [...]
I think last week's mix was pretty darn successful thanks to staying within the boundaries of making a mix. Sometimes it's good for me to have a theme, it keeps me focused and makes me delve further than I normally would. This week's theme is a fairly simple one but has some interesting results. The theme's title is Name Dropping and revolves around songs that happen to have a famous person's name in the title of the song. I've gone from some of the most arty bands out there to some of the most popular, and from some indisputably famous [...]

About fucking time, right? It has been nearly five months since I dropped Volume 1 of my 100 favorite Jeff Tweedy songs on all 14 of my readers. I'm sure half a dozen of you were beginning to wonder if I was ever going to continue the task. Well, fear not, fellow readers (Mom, Dad, that guy from high school who still wants to kill me), the list is back. I'm still hoping to get this completed by year's end, so expect a few more of these in the coming months. [...]

For today's Soundtrack Saturday, I'm mixing it up a little. Up to this point, I've been choosing a single film and highlighting its soundtrack. This week, I've decided to choose an actor and highlight songs from some of his films. My first choice is not an arbitrary one; Vincent D'Onofrio is hands down my favorite actor. His body of work is so varied and he brings something amazing to every movie he does. Most of you probably first saw him in Full Metal Jacket (though my first Vincent sighting was in [...]
I'm happy to announce that Obscure Sound and THINKFilm are teaming up to bring you a promotional giveaway of the soundtrack of the new movie Half Nelson , featuring Broken Social Scene . The movie tells the story of a young white junior high school teacher (Ryan Gosling) in the Bronx who somehow finds a way to reach out to his students, who are growing up in a conflicting society. Broken Social Scene and Billy Bragg head a very diverse soundtrack to the movie, which releases on August 11th. "Broken Social Scene began in 1999, born [...]
