Lots of cool rock 'n rollers have submitted art pieces to London's Signal Gallery for a "Punk and Beyond" art show, starting Nov 25th through December 17th. Rockers include Robyn Hitchcock, Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices), Grant Hart (Husker Du), Billy Childish, Paul Simonon (The Clash) and many others. Plan your travel abroad accordingly.
Several weeks ago, I was proud to have Gaye Black/Advert as a guest on the Peer Pressure segment of Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine . Check the archive for the show here; she was a great guest, played strictly black metal, and we talked about her life post-Adverts - a lot of which consists of being an exhibiting collage/construction artist, and some photos of her work are displayed on the playlist. Those of you in the London region are lucky; she's curating a show that opens November 25th at the Signal Gallery that features art from [...]
Early rock & roll fetishist, garage devotee, punk rocker, bandleader, impresario: Billy Childish has gone by about as many names and monikers as he has mustaches (and he's had some good ones on both counts) but at their core, whether recording as Thee Headcoats, The Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars or The Buff Medways they all boil [...]
The Pogues on record are never short of inspirational, and in person, they might be a life-changing experience. This hackle-raising blend of traditional Irish folk music, politically charged broadsides and electric rock 'n' roll, delivered by charismatic frontman Shane MacGowan flanked by a grizzled band of veterans that includes penny-whistle virtuoso/alternate vocalist Spider Stacy, was [...]

I've been on a bit of a Billy Childish kick lately, digitizing all my Milkshakes, Mighty Caesars, Headcoats, Headcoatees, etc. LPs. I think I currently have about 20 Billy Childish related albums on my iPod, more than any reasonable person would need, but somehow still not quite enough for me. Childish has long been a proponent of amateurism in music, poetry and painting. The classic problem with amateurism, of course, is that you can't make a career of it. But somehow Childish has managed to avoid many of the pitfalls that other artists who value musical passion over [...]
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Mod Showdown. In the right corner we have the reigning champions, Mudhoney, managed by thee great Billy Childish. In the left corner we have the challengers, Halo Of Flies, managed by John's Children. Most fight enthusiasts have predicted a knock-out win for Mudhoney in the first round. And the champs come out swinging with a cover of The Milkshakes' "She's Just Fifteen." It's going to be tough to beat a song with lyrics like, "I'm so lazy don't get out of bed 'til twelve o'clock, Got no time for workin', Never [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Book Club In the early-to-mid '90s, following the success of Nirvana, major labels made what will likely prove their last-ever push to sign underground punk bands. Amid the frenzy, even some of the freewheeling neo-garage acts covered in Eric Davidson 's recently released debut book, 'We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988-2001,' managed to scam their way into the mainstream. As refreshing as it was to see, say, Rocket from the Crypt getting some MTV love, the revolution [...]

When bands like The White Stripes and The Hives began bubbling to the mainstream surface around the turn of the century and the term "garage rock" was being bantered around as hip currency despite its obvious retro connotations, there was still a whole swath of bands left largely ignored. It is this segment of the underground that Eric Davidson, the lead larynx of the New Bomb Turks and longtime music scribe for a number of publications, examines in his new book, We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988–2001 [...]

Thee Billy Childish doesn't stop. And here, he's pretty bummed out about that and everything else.
"And now I'd like to start this evening with some poetry" …if there was any phrase that could strike fear into the hearts of the young, stupid and drunk, it was that, the second one being… "Here's a piece I wrote about my girlfriend's abortion…" What a blissful way to start the first night of your holiday, listening to the depraved, bitter, heart-wrenching travails of a man wronged by the world: it really sets you up for a night of frolics on the beer. As we stared headlong into the cavernous abyss that is Billy Childish's part-metal [...]
sweet jeebus this has taken a fucking age to write. usually i crank out these things in ten minute bursts of booze fuelled stream of conscience keyboard abuse - you can tell can't you - hoping desperately to finish before falling asleep or finding myself searching for new additions to my celebrity upskirt pictures collection. are [...]
"I wanted to use the Union Jack as a backdrop but I was told that wouldn't go down very well…I wonder why…?" , Childish sighs, ever the contrary devil before launching into another rib-rattling garage gem. Like his fellow grumpy old stalwart Mark E. Smith, Mr. Childish has been at this racket for an awfully long time, peddling his uncompromising three chord bashing garage-punk dirges, falling in and out of favour with the hipsters for over twenty years. Still as obstinate as ever what you see is what you get at a Childish gig, a wizened [...]
OK, a pair of Christmassy songs (sort of ) First up - Santa Claus ( mp3 ) by Wild Billy Childish & The Musicians of the British Empire - seemingly from a 'Christmas 1979' album, but I dunno - wiki reckons they didn't exist 'til 2006.... Ahh yes, a 2007 album called Christmas 1979 - righto. Whatever, it's a cracking song, maybe a bit naughty . myspace | buy | amazon | wiki | [...]

By God, it's an odd time we live in. A whole country waiting around for Tony Blair to go, everything the government does is ridiculed on principle, the inevitibility of Gordon Brown succeeding Blair, and the futility of thinking that Tony Brown will be different from Gordon Blair. It's odd times when you start to weigh up in your mind whether to vote for the Conservatives or the Green Party,
