Golden Grove: The Sound of Philadelphia lets us be part of a legendary performance by Philadelphia artists in their prime.

Golden Gate Groove: The Sound Of Philadelphia in 1973 is one concert I would have loved to have been at. Released today, the album, according to Philadelphia International Records "documents the first—and only— time that the stars of Philadelphia International Records ever played in concert with the label's fabled house band, MFSB. The concert took place in San Francisco during the annual CBS Records convention at the Fairmont Hotel in September 1973." In a review of the album on the music site The Second Disc , Joe Marchese writes: Recorded on July [...]

The Philadelphia International All Stars : Let's Clean Up The Ghetto [ purchase ] Always a socially conscious label, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Records released a compilation in 1977 that called for urban rejuvenation through the call: "Let's Clean Up The Ghetto". The record featured some of the label's great names: The O'Jays, Lou Rawls, The Three Degrees, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, Intruders, Billy Paul, Dee Dee Sharp and Archie Bell. All but four of the [...]

Paul Williams, 1 December 1934, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Although Paul had been an active singer in the Philadelphia area since the 50s, singing in jazz clubs and briefly with Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes, it was not until he met producer Kenny Gamble that his career prospered. After signing to the Neptune label, he enjoyed a successful spell on the Philadelphia International Records label. His instinctive, jazz-based delivery provided an unlikely foil for the label's highly structured, sweet-soul sound but Paul's impressive debut hit, 1972's US chart-topping 'Me And Mrs Jones', nonetheless encapsulated the genre. [...]

I've been hearing a lot of smack about Amy Winehouse's death. I've over heard people saying how they don't really care and read dozens of sarcastic comments on people's "R.I.P Amy Winehouse" facebook statuses saying "she shoulda gone to rehab" or some other sort of retarded status update along the lines. Regardless of how she died and whether it had to do with her serious drug abuse or not, I don't think that the death of such a talented musician should be taken so heartlessly. I've always really appreciated Winehouse's music, she brought back motown, jazz, and soul to a [...]

In the 6 th volume of soul covers, we have the great Grady Tate's interpretation of the Theme of M*A*S*H and versions of songs previously recorded by Gil Scott-Heron, Bob Dylan, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Elvis Presley, James Taylor, Righteous Brothers, Tammy Wynette, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Joe South, Rolling Stones, Credence Clearwater Revival, James Brown, Cream , Peggy Lee, The Beatles, The Flamingos, Julie Andrews, Nat 'King' Cole, Billy Joel and Cat Stevens. Quite a mixed bag. This mix features a fair number of country songs remade as soul songs, showing how close the two [...]
Five good covers of Elton John's 'Your Song.' Tribute paid by Ellie Goulding, Billy Paul, Rod Stewart, Ewan McGregor and The Streets.

The first mix of soul covers was very popular (and great fun to compile), so I hope that subsequent compilations will also find an audience.I think I have at least two more in the works. There are a few surprising covers in this mix. Maxayn reshape the Rolling Stones song entirely, while the wonderful Zulema Cusseaux, a gifted songwriter in her own right, perhaps even tops my favourite solo McCartney track. And could there be soul versions of Wild Thing? Jagger's ex-squeeze Marsha Hunt gave it a shot. Scanning the tracklisting, there are some wonderful [...]

Cover Wars March Madness is officially over and we will offer one more congratulations to our winners Perpetual Groove. Now, the 2010-2011 Cover Wars Regular Season begins. For the first contest of the season, we look at four covers of the first track off the 1976 Wings album At The Speed Of Sound - Let 'Em In. The song is written and sung by Sir Paul McCartney. The Contestants: Billy Paul : This ultra smooth cover complete with strings, horns, and an [...]

Generally I'm wary of cover versions, especially if the song being covered is already well known in its original form or is otherwise identified with a particular artist. There is not much you can do to improve on, say, Bridge Over Troubled Water other than to strip the song down and rework it completely. Not many artists have succeeded in doing so. But for an example of how a well-known song can be totally reworked, one might look to Otis Redding's version of Try A Little Tenderness ( originally recorded by Bing Crosby ). Or listen to what Donny Hathaway [...]
Obba Supa have got a mixtape coming with production from Hey!Zeus, presented by the venerable Hypedog . All songs will use Billy Paul samples (I do hope they've got clearance or at least asked his permission, otherwise the shit will hit the fan). Sounds like this is gonna be a good one, so keep your eyes peeled as it'll be available right here shortly.

Quality 80s funk/soul jam from hyper-talented West Philly Music School grad Billy Paul, best known for his early 70s hit Me And Mrs. Jones . This is the only uptempo cut from Paul's first album after the end of his relationship with Philly International Records- this is from Total Experience. Sorry about the dirty-sounding record. The buzz surrounding Young Jeezy's new, Belvedere-sponsored video "Circulate" is intoxicating.

The sound of Philly for the homeboy B. It's all about balance so when you do Stax , you have to even it out with Gamble & Huff from Philly International. The track, little known to current generations, that laid the foundation for Schooly's rap of the same name. Billy Paul - Am I Black Enough For You

The man sang like his voice was a jazz trumpet. The majority of his repertoire was composed of pop and ballads (check out "I Want Cha' Baby ) but he was more a revolutionary than a romantic. Although his biggest-selling release was the quintessential cheating song, "Me And Mrs. Jones," Billy Paul was actually a black power advocate who had the ability to turn a love song into an ode to struggling for a better life. For Billy Paul and for those of us of the same or similar political persuasion "a better life" necessarily included (to [...]
Billy Paul - Let 'Em In This was a great charity shop find by Hal and me. Soul singer Billy Paul had already had a massive hit on the Philadelphia International Label with Me and Mrs Jones in 1972, which was a platinum selling US no.1. In 1976 he released the album Let 'Em In . The title track is a cover of the Wings song, from their album Wings at the Speed of Sound also released in 1976. The original Wings [...]
