Of course, Say Anything has "In Your Eyes", Goodfellas has "Layla", Apocalypse Now has "The End", Fight Club has "Where Is Your Mind", but a cover song in a movie is just different. A cover song in a movie elevates the drama - ascribing all kinds of meaning and sentiment to the music being played. All of a sudden this song that we're pretty sure we've heard before is chewing the scenery and the actors fade into the background. When the director has two characters listen to Sonic Youth cover The Carpenters, or opens his film with a dusty acoustic [...]

On the second day of Christmas, Musical Fruitcake gave to me....a much needed song about snow. I don't know how I've gone this long in life without paying attention to this little beauty, but I will freely admit this is the first year I think I have ever truly heard this song. And MAN have I heard it. XM's 402s on 4 have played every version of this song since Thanksgiving multiple times per day. This is my favorite one where three greats get together to mix it up a bit. What is Christmas with no snow? [...]

Mele Christmas! Merry Christmas! The family and I are still in Hawaii, as I mentioned yesterday, so what better way to say "Merry Christmas" than the "Hawaiian way," as the song says. "Mele Kalikimaka" may not be a traditional Hawaiian song, having actually been written by Robert Alex Anderson in 1949 - and first recorded by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters in 1950 - but it has certainly been adopted by many a Hawaiian. (Interesting side note, at least for me: Anderson graduated from Cornell University, my alma mater.) Among those who have made [...]

It’s time again for Friday on My Mind , our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one theme. This is a collaboration between KEXP and King 5 News. It’s that time of the season again, so we’re looking at holiday songs. In A.D. 350, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25th the official celebration date for the birthday of Christ. Humanity then decided, "sure, he was born on the 25th of December". Granted that would be like someone deciding I was born on March 19th in 2362, but you've got to [...]

The amazing Lexy and the Kill have uploaded a stunning cover of the Bing Crosby classic 'White Christmas'. The day is now only 5 days away and this has seriously put us in the festive mood! Check it out! Follow / [FACEBOOK] Listen / [SOUNDCLOUD]

As Ned Stark would say, "winter is coming". That also means Christmas time is here, full of good cheer and snow and scarves and presents and Christmas lights to light up the night. So, in honor of this upcoming joyous occasion here are some of the best Christmas tracks I've received this year...as well as a remix of the man himself and the song of the season, Bing Crosby's "White Christmas". It's not as good as the original (how could it be, right? Right?!), but it is an interesting take nonetheless. Hope you enjoy them and [...]
It is, after all, that time of year! I'll do a proper countdown from 5 to 1! Some choices may seem odd but hey, they are mine! #5 Christmas Is Coming A classic from forever! A Charlie Brown Christmas!!! Can't get better from the classics department! #4 Fuck Christmas - Eric Idle Okay, so rude as it can possibly be. Bypass it if it offends your delicate sensibilities! Without a doubt this is the most famous, and strange, holiday song collaboration. How someone ever decided to put David Bowie and Bing Crosby is beyond me but what can I say......it worked! If you are looking for a Christmas miracle this pairing qualifies. Enjoy.... Your surprise gift tonight is my favorite David Bowie performance of all time. David has adopted some amazing personas and has had some incredible performance but this isn't one of them. This is a low key David at the Concert for New York City after 9/11 and what makes [...]
In the late 1920s, successful musical ensembles usually featured a style that sounds pretty square to us now. Bands often included string sections and specialized in sweet songs perfect for dancing, with crooning vocalists occasionally thrown in for good measure, and groups led by guys like Paul Whiteman and Anson Weeks provided work for a lot of future stars. In fact, Whiteman helped Bing Crosby get off to a good start, but Weeks did him one better - he not only worked with Bing but also gave brother Bob Crosby [...]

When legendary crooner Bing Crosby was first rising to stardom in the 1930s, he wasn't the only guy vying for the adoration of music fans. In fact, one of his contemporaries was a British singer who was often compared to him. But even though Al Bowlly had a world of talent and seemed to have a big career ahead of him, he would meet a violent death just a few years later. Born in Mozambique and raised in British South Africa, Albert Allick Bowlly (who had way too many L's in his name) was of Lebanese [...]

As we reported last week, apparently Ke$ha is collaborating with her "idol" Iggy Pop for a song on her upcoming album. Our initial response to this was pretty much like everyone else's, involving a combination of the letters "W," "T," and "F," but the more we think about it, the more we're coming around to the idea that the track could actually be pretty great. After all, it's hardly the first pop/rock collaboration, and some of the results of pairing up pop singers and rock stars over the years have been thoroughly excellent. We've pulled together a few [...]

Throughout musical history, most professional artists have had numerous opportunities to work with some of the best of their contemporaries, sometimes building up an impressive list of collaborators during a long career. But in at least one case, a pioneering jazz guitarist with a tragically shortened career still left behind a legacy that included working with many stars. Those performances, in addition to his solo virtuosity, made Eddie Lang an inspiration to many and earned him the nickname 'The Father of Jazz Guitar'. Born as Salvatore Massaro in turn of the century Philadelphia, [...]
