NYC-based Producer and Singer Quinn Luke may be better known as a member of the Phenomenal Handclap Band , but this is the side project where he gets to shine. Getting in on the Blue-Eyed-Soul resurgence led by gentlemen like Mayer Hawthorne, Luke gets soulful over some four on the floor with a massive list of credited players on the record. Bing Ji Ling retains Handclap's funky riff foundations, but the scope of the songs leave behind the indie tag in favor of an epic, produced, disco sound. Equal parts Bill Withers, Arthur Lee, Barry White, [...]

Sadly, I never quite got The Phenomenal Handclap Band. Can't explain it, not making excuses; just didn't float my boat. Now, that band's frontman is dba simply Bing Ji Ling (Mandarin for "ice cream") and has come up with a freaky 70s sherbet blend of soul, pop and funk that's guaranteed to jumpstart sun-shiny days from here until we gotta say goodbye for the summer. Featuring members of the Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Scissor Sisters and Antibalas et al, full-length Shadow To Shine [...]
Bing Ji Ling, the solo project from Phenomenal Handclap Band's Quinn Luke, have announced bi-coastal US tour dates. Bing Ji Ling, which means "ice cream" in Mandarin, dropped "Shadow To Shine" on March 22nd via Tummy Touch Records. It's indie retro '70s disco rock and he's at the forefront of this new style of music. It's reminiscent of Beck, Earth Wind and Fire, Shuggie Otis and ABBA. It's playful and danceable, making disco a friendly world again.

Sarah Taylor from The Taylor Project recently welcomed an as-yet-unnamed baby woman into the VPS, I mean the world. This is a momentous event, yet I feel a small cringe of guilt. Prior to the happy event Sarah and I had gone to see AC/DC live in Melbourne to get in touch with our inner (or not so inner) bogan. More or less as a direct result, several of the presents at her baby shower had AC/DC

Just a quicky today. Firstly, can I ask (not that I imagine this mumbo jumbo gets read much) that anyone sending music does it through my dropbox now pretty pretty please? As it stands I'm 1500+ emails behind and doubt I'll ever catch up so doing that makes everything HEAPS easier for me to listen to tunes being submitted. I feel really bad for having to neglect so many emails but there's just no way I can process it all. I do still love you though. All of you. Except SXSW. Fuck off with your 300 [...]
by marc amigone I don't know what I'll be doing when I'm 63, but it probably won't be releasing a full-length album on my own record label and traveling to Africa as a cultural ambassador for peace. For Burning Spear , whose new album Jah is Real came out August 17th on Burning Spear Records, that's icing on the cake of a legendary career in which he's released fifty-one records, been nominated for eleven grammies, starred in [...]
by bmac Warm Up is an acclaimed summer music series that goes down each Saturday (from July 5-Sept 6) at the P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City, Queens. Each year P.S. 1 holds a design contest where one lucky architecture firm gets to transform their courtyard into a funky venue for a weekly 7-hour pregame from 2-9pm. This year's winning team, WORK , went the green-route and created an urban farm out of large cardboard tubes. There's a $10 [...]

I was first turned on to Bing Ji Ling (real name Quinn Luke) by my friend Charlie Hall, drummer extraordinaire (War On Drugs, Trouble With Sweeney, Windsor For the Derby, Tommy Guerrero, etc). Charlie's been living in Philly however I recently ran into Charlie and Bing at South By; they were in town to play a a couple of shows including the soul-explosion showcase on Saturday night at a Ubiquity Records throwdown at Club DeVille with Bing and Darondo. Bing has a supreme soul/dance/electronica music background that includes working with Tommy Guerrero's [...]

"I saw Bing Ji Ling riding a bike near the Bedford stop in Brooklyn." – Jenn de la Vega, Fanatic Promotion "I saw him at the bus stop at 11th and A, and then the next day at Whole Foods." – Josh Bloom, Fanatic Promotion "I wasn't at either of those spots... I was on tour with Lynard Skynard ." – Bing Ji Ling. The Bing Ji Ling sightings mentioned above are not isolated incidents. This occurrence seems to be a daily thing with Quinn Luke who claims there are several folks impersonating [...]
