As the national bird of Trinidad, the scarlet ibis is featured on the Trinidad & Tabago coat of arms. At birth, a young ibis is grey and white, and as they get older, their diet of tropical red crabs gradually changes their body pigment to scarlet. The long curved beak is used to probe for food in mud and shallow water, guided mostly by touch, while also using the beak to clean and smooth its feathers. Seeking shelter in tropical rain forests, ibis populations nest in large breeding colonies where [...]

Day 1 of voluntary underemployment. Number of cigarettes smoked: Remarkably, zero. Number of times threatening son with bodily harm: Seventy hundred General mental state: Huh? I know I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again - you ladies (and gentlemen, pardon me) who spend more time at home with kids than at work have got my respect. I don't know how you do it and maintain anything resembling sanity or the capacity to form a cogent sentence. I only had half a [...]

The Bird and the Bee - Ray Guns are not just de Future (2009)
by john cole (pics by Photos by autumn dewilde) After becoming mildly obsessed with their self-titled debut from 2007, I was both excited and relieved when I heard The Bird And The Bee would be releasing a new full length early this year. Ray Guns… is a beautifully constructed and orchestrated album, which includes Inara George's lush and radiant vocals alongside Greg Kurstin's highly-detailed instrumentation. [...]

BAILAR Y LLORAR, TELERADIO DONOSO Oveja Negra, Chile ****1/2 Rating: 93 By Carlos Reyes To dance crying or to cry dancing, Teleradio Donoso makes a quick move releasing their sophomore album full of nostalgia and rhythm. In their latest album, The Killers talked about how America was raising a new generation of dancers, Teleradio Donoso's approach to reach common ground inclines to individual change, about the joy of love and its painful desolation, [...]

Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future is The Bird & The Bee's second album after the success of the debut project of jazz standards. I gave it 7 listens and I can confirm that it is good. It might not have stick out tracks like "Again & Again" or "Fucking Boyfriend," but it's cohesive and strong. The lead single - "Love Letter To Japan" - is not the best track, though.

I've been meaning to write my (semi) annual Christmas post for the last couple of weeks, but the frenzy of the holiday season has nearly overwhelmed me this year. Still, I hope that this year's batch of songs will still be appreciated as people prepare for their holiday celebrations. Some of these songs have been featured here before. Some are brand new. But all of them are favorites of mine and will be great to hear year after year. On behalf of Womenfolk, I wish everyone a happy holiday season. Classics: [...]

It was a perfect Spring Sunday in South Australia today. In the spirit of rebirth and new beginnings, I thought it would be a graceful gesture to make peace with my avian adversaries. Some of you may remember that winter was awash with bellicose encounters with our fine feathered friends . Well, it has been a long and - for both sides - relatively fruitless campaign. Both birds and Free Men still occupy the same turf, neither cowed, neither beaten. I thought it was time to step [...]
