Birdmonster said it best in a recent email explaining their whereabouts: "My, my. It's been a while, hasn't it? We're sorry. We missed you too. We were just waiting for that special time between the Harold Camping-sponsored apocalypse and the Mayan-flavored cataclysm and that time is now." It's true that Birdmonster activity has slowed a bit since 20062s No Midnight , 20082s From the Mountain to the Sea , and 20092s Blood Memory (especially given the recent solo adventures of Sonny Pete ). However, a new [...]

Today marks our third feature of San Francisco based band Birdmonster here on the Network, with a spitfire of a track from their late 2009 release 'Blood Memory'. It was produced up at Hyde Street Studios by Tom Schick. You first heard Birdmonster on our San Francisco regional show run by Scott Tinetti, Episode #4 to be exact. They were also on the Daily Dose a few years later, so there's plenty of music to sample if you have not heard much from the group before. We highly recommend you bookmark both [...]

He is eight days from home and Carl Shapiro, namesake of DC-based Shapiro, can't wait to get into his own bed. The 6-foot-2, lion-maned bassist has been sleeping in a 15-passenger van for the past month, on the road with his bandmates to spread their sound of piano-infused pop-rock with audiences in small clubs and venues all over the United States. Here is a look at the band's journey toward success and recognition.

Birdmonster have been one of the star players in the indie rock movement in the Bay Area. Peter Arcuni's energetic vocals and the band's growth from post-punk fortitude to indie folk catchiness is a treat for anyone listening to their collection of impressive records. While 2006's No Midnight is my favorite, last year's Blood Memory highlights the band's versatility the genre of folk rock, solidifying Birdmonster as one of the better bands to come out of San Francisco. Local music and local comedy will join forces by being showcased under the same roof during the new regular series Snob Theater , hosted by Kata Rokkar at The Dark Room. For the first installment this Thursday, live music from Dave Smallen and Birdmonster will accompany the comedic offerings of Jules Posner , Emily Heller , Natasha Muse and Mary Van Note (8pm, $10). This is something that I have been working on for about 6 months now. This is the kind of show I always wanted to happen in the Bay Area; mainly because we have an amazing stand-up comedy scene and an ever blooming music scene with an immense amount of potential. I will be hosting this show monthly and while I can't tell you who's on board for the future just yet, let's just say we'll be having more musical 'Slices' of the Bay Area in the future Ladies and gentlemen I give you, Snob Theater [...]

This week I posted about Bay Area based band, Boy in the Bubble , who had their last record played on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. The band will be hosting a record release party tonight at Bottom of the Hill with Birdmonster, Here Come The Saviors , and the reunited Girl Band . Which means you now have something to do tonight! The new record, entitled The King , is a 5×7 illustrated book chock full of song download codes. Avoiding the boring and inevitable death of CDs, [...]
Do you remember the first time you heard that incredible song? You played it to the point of redundancy and still managed to enjoy it every subsequent listen. Then you got older and your ears more selective, moving onward to find more great songs. After time and upon nearly forgetting the track all-together, you hear it once more and go through an entire renaissance with your cherished tune all over again. Now, for what seems like the last month or so (but likely just over a week), the entire San Francisco Bay Area has been one big, soggy, sad, cloudy mess. Perhaps that's why those who braved the elements to check out Birdmonster's show on Friday at The Bottom of The Hill were rewarded with more than the usual amount of revelry and companionship. Live music, much like family dinners and sporting events, is one of the world's great community-building events. The intimacy of the venue, coupled with Birdmonster's bright and energetic performance reaffirmed why the group is not [...]

Attention - Everything Takes Forever (2009) A few years back a band called Gratitude featuring Far's Jonah Matranga burst onto the rock scene with minimal success. Jonah left (as he usually does) and did his own thing while the rest of the members went on to start Attention . Attention is basically Gratitude's 4-minute rock song formula with guitarist Jeremy Tappero belting out the vocals this time around. The album is nothing new whatsoever. It fits rather well with the Jimmy Eat Worlds and [...]

I don't know what it is about cold, wet, Autumn days, but I get very inspired to make mixes. It's suppose to snow this Saturday. Saturday is game 3 of the NLDS at Coors Field, where the Rockies face the Phillies. Does it make me less of a fan for not wanting to endure the elements to support the team? I just assume enjoy the game from the warm confines of the bar around the corner on Blake Street where my beers don't' cost $10. Desert Song-Edward Sharpe & The [...]

"Too Much Time," from John Vanderslice's Romanian Names is one of my favorite tracks of the year, and I was pleased this week to see that he's released a demo of the song to gear up for the single's 73 release. The stripped down model of the dreamy contemplative track is on the playlist we're offering you today, and in about fifteen words I'm going to link up a vid of Vanderslice performing "Forest Knolls" with a full on orchestra just because every track on this album mystifies and stops me dead in my tracks. It's an arresting [...]

Now we are back, better than ever, with an extra-large Free Music Friday post that includes some free and legal music from a bunch of heavy hitters... just click the band name for the band's site and the song name for the MP3. In addition, we've got a bit [...]

A lot of times, things get lost in my inbox because of the amount that gets submitted and it's definitely not aided by my own horrendous organizational skills. So when I started to go through some earlier emails, I was very upset that I missed the email containing an advance copy of Birdmonster 's new EP. There's something incredibly satisfying and pretentious about hearing music before everyone else is allowed to. It was already released by the time I read the email and I missed the chance this time, but I enjoyed the EP anyway. [...]
