![Concert review: The Watchmen with Birds of Wales [Horseshoe tavern, September 25, 2010]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2850372_lg.jpg)
Toronto - Ever go to a concert and feel like it's in fact a costume party? This Saturday night certain seemed like one. The Watchmen obviously has some inner strengths, not least being emotive singing. But unless you have been sleeping for the past decade, both Joey Serlin and Daniel Greaves now sport sleek and edgy bald looks. I counted no less than 20 other guys who share this fashion sense at the Watchmen's reunion show when I walk in, and more over the length of the night. Granted, it's not something rare. We're not talking about a Halloween party [...]
Birds of Wales Birds of Wales sounds British, "Uninteresting" reminds you of Coldplay's "Yellow" and the guys have only received praise so far. They're not new in the game – they've hang around since 2005/2006. But for those who haven't met them yet: meet Birds of Wales, a folk rock band from Toronto and Vancouver, [...]

Toronto- The most important thing happening this week is that Lost will be over. So many questions to be answered. Do I expect them to be answered? Hells no. They just spent an hour last week telling us a story about two characters that we even see until like 10 episodes ago. My only wish is that they don't kill off the last Asian on the show. You know what would have been funny? if they would have brought back the cast of Party of Five to be involved as Jack's relatives in his alternate universe. Why am I not [...]
Over the last year or so there has been a big buzz building behind Toronto-based indie rockers Birds of Wales. On April 13th it all comes to a head as the quartet release their debut full length album Belgravia Hotel. The album's sound is probably best characterized by the track "Philanthropist". It's a light rock sound with a slight twang and a reasonably catchy refrain. Some tracks, like
Hi Vancouver, I realize this is very short notice, but there is an event tomorrow (Friday December 18th) you just can't miss. Descartes a Kant The 2008 South By Southwest music and film conference is well under way this week in Austin, Texas, and there are quite a few exciting artists being showcased this year. In addition to well-known names like Spoon and R.E.M. , as well as bands that are currently receiving a large amount of hype, such as MGMT and Vampire Weekend , there are a slew of relatively unknown (and quite good) bands performing. On today's show we get to [...]
Another year, another missed SXSW. I promise next year I'll try my best to get down to Austin to check out this seminal function in music, but this year I'll be here in Columbus, hanging out, waiting for the snow to melt. But that doesn't mean I can't help some folks out. I know that most of you reading this blog will also be missing out on the festivities in Austin, so I figured I would take a look at the list of bands playing this year, and do what I'm sure many many music fans do [...]
We continue sampling our favorite artists and songs found at the SXSW 2008 Showcasing Artists website. We still have a lot more to go, so keep dropping by if you like. I should have said earlier how incredibly generous it is of the SXSW folks to make these available, so in case any of those busy eyes peer here, THANKS! Our previous SXSW 2008 posts can be found here and here. Hope you're finding

Toronto, ON It's been a while since I've thrown a lot of love toward the Canadians. Here's a fine way to get back in to that groove. Birds Of Wales is highly recommended for anybody who enjoys some good ol' sexy folk rock. "Fall Of The 49" Birds Of Wales on MySpace
Yes, I'm back. I gotta tell ya, the San Juan Islands are some the most beautiful I've seen in this country. It's such an unusual blend of forest and ocean. Very dramatic views, lovely weather this time of year, some good mountain biking, sea kayaking, and some unbelievable food at Inn At Ship Bay . If you're ever in that neighborhood I can't recommend it enough. My journey was done by car. The drive from San Francisco to the San Juan Islands is about 17 hours give or take a little. The [...]
