Death Ledger is the sound Birthday Girls ' Kevin Donnelly experimenting on his own, generating deep and bass-heavy R&B-inflected tracks that are a far cry away from the output of his full-time band. "White Wine" in particular is an immaculately produced widescreen evolution of the gauzy/glitchy soundscapes of Clams Casino or Holy Other that are in vogue right now, and is available as part of an excellent 4-track EP at Death Ledger's Bandcamp page . This week's round up of the tracks I've not had the space to post ... Thee Ludds From: Leicester, United Kingdom Garage rock so primal it probably lives in a cave wearing a bearskin and eating dinosaur meat off the bone. Go Try [...]

I gave up meat almost thirteen years ago (the actual anniversary will be on Thanksgiving). Since that time I have only eaten it once, though it wasn't on purpose. I was working at a health food store, famished after having eaten nothing all day. We were closing for the evening and getting ready to throw out some mashed potatoes. I decided to eat some, not wanting these veggie delights to go to waste. After a few, it was apparent that what I had thought was potato skins was actually pancetta. The cook had left that part out. It didn't take [...]

Did You Hear? :: Beyonce spent her 30th birthday this weekend with Jay-Z - and her baby bump - in Venice, Italy. [ E! Online ] :: Rolling Stone readers aren't big fans of Aqua, naming their song "Barbie Girl" the worst song to come out of the 90s. [ Rolling Stone ] :: Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong was kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight from Oakland to Burbank for having his pants sagging too low. Because the low-hanging pantaloons of a punk rocker is definitely the biggest threat [...]

Photo by National Capital Commission It's pre-Canada Day today but here goes. Happy Canada Day 2011! Hope everyone will be enjoying their weekend and celebrate Canada's 144th birthday. I decided to make a mixtape which all the acts are Canadian. I know some of the songs don't have Canada as a theme but just wanted people to have fun to the songs on Canada Day. Enjoy! Aidan Knight - North East South [...]

I'll admit Travis Porter music is different from just about everyone else, that's why its so good. First up, they get Bei Maejor to produce the track "Birthday Girl" which he also does the hook for. Just download it, you'll like/love it....and will be partying to it this weekend. Second, "You Don't Know" is another Travy song that just proves they're swaggin 10x harder than you. Don't be jealous. mp3: Travis Porter feat. Bei Maejor - Birthday Girl [...]

The trio of whose only mission is to get drunk, party and have females loosing their minds to their music is back with another track which should accomplish all three tasks. Travis Porter's "Birthday Girl" should be impacting radio, clubs and strip clubs in a matter of weeks with its infectious melody and habitual rhymes of carefree living. Ladies have a new theme song for Friday and Saturday nights, not to mention their birthdays. My only hope is that the video is better than "Make It Rain." On a related note, I [...]

It's my birthday today so I've decided to give myself a few presents. Being a kind little Devil I thought I'd share them with you all. Go Try Golden Birthday by Golden Birthday Let's Take This Party Downstairs by Birthday Girls Happy Birthday [...]

Stream / Download: WALSH- Karaoke I was late to the party when it came to WALSH's first EP in '10, and I'm late again to enjoy his latest release, too. Am I surprised? No. But one of my kind 'Drops turned me on to this, so I have to give credit where it's due. Allegedly , WALSH is the solo effort of the same man who has released music under the name Coolrunnings. He also runs things over at the label Dracula Horse . [...]

Justin Bieber's pop colleague and birthday twin Ke$ha turns 24 today, and we're planning to celebrate K-Dolla's big day just how she would — by getting krunk with a bunch of unicorns and passing out in an empty hotel pool , of course! How can you join in the festivities at home? By watching the "Slutwave" queen sky-diving in Australia. (The vid popped up mid-February, but we're just now catching it, and we couldn't pass up posting it.) Watch the glitter maven soar through the air like a gin-soaked feather after the jump. [...]

New dance-punk/post-punk band from Ottawa. They sent their new self-titled EP to me shortly before Christmas via mediafire which would normally be grounds for immediate deletion but they're Canadian so I gave them a pass and checked it out anyway. SOUNDCLOUD or BANDCAMP , people - read the guidelines . Anyway, getting back on topic, here's their self-description: " Birthday Girls combines distorted bass with synthesizer, live drums, and harsh vocals for a distinctive sound that draws from our main influences including bands such as: [...]
Here is a complete list of things I think are correct about Ottawa: 1. NHL Team named the Senators 2. Alanis Morissette's Hometown 3. Capital of Canada That's my long way of saying that I'm woefully ignorant of the city and its denizens. Birthday Girls also hail from Ottawa, and while the probably won't cure...
A strong debut EP can build a lot of buzz and expectation for a full length album. I have a feeling that's exactly what's going to happen with the self-titled debut EP from Ottawa post-punks Birthday Girls. The first thing that catches your attention with Birthday Girls is their seemingly boundless energy. All of the EP's four tracks are propulsive efforts, particularly "Let's Take the Party

What a cold, damp, rainy Monday in November needs is a sharp kick in the arse to get the blood flowing, fists pumping, and adrenaline coursing. Ottawa's Birthday Girls is just what the doctor ordered. Their melodic, synth-heavy, bass-thumping sounds pay homage to heroes Death From Above 1979 and Bloc Party, as drummer Lloyd Alexander said in a recent local interview, "“We’ve always liked the more dance-oriented punk music... we want people to dance.” The three piece-rounded out by Kyle Kilbride on bass and vocals and Kevin Donnelly on synths-have released their debut four-song [...]

At first I thought Birthday Girls was a all girl group. I was totally wrong, the band is a trio from Ottawa. Recently seen their names popped up for some shows in the Ottawa music scene (I was not around due to being at Pop Montreal or other shows). With various shows happening in Ottawa at the same time, I haven't seen them live yet. The band just released their debut self-titled EP. It is four tracks of indie dance, noise rock and post-punk tunes. Very reminisced to Death From [...]
