![[3.14 : A Pi Day Mix]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2407764_lg.jpg)
3.14 Pi Day Mix Apparently the United States is the only one that formats its dates as Month.Day.Year, so for most of you out there, this is going to be pretty irrelevant. Considering the international date line, this was always going to be pretty irrelevant to all of you out there in the future. Regardless! Today is 3.14, and for the nerds in the United States, that number only means one thing - Pi. Happy Pi Day, nerds! 3.14 Pi Day Mix (artist name leads to [...]

On December 23rd, the Washington D.C. area received 16 inches of snow, making it the sixth largest snow storm the area had seen in recorded history. Shortly thereafter, I escaped to my home country of South Africa, where summer reigned supreme. I thought, perhaps, that D.C. had seen the worst of the bad weather, but upon my return I was greeted with quite the opposite. Since the New Year, we have been hammered. Last weekend, we toppled Christmas's record, with nearby areas reporting up to 3 feet of the cold, fluffy stuff. With another 10-20 inches predicted for [...]
Friday night the Mrs. and I headed out to our first show at what is probably Chicago's newest live music venue, Lincoln Hall . It's the new space from the same guys who've owned Schubas (one of our faves) for years and they really didn't miss a thing. The main bar looks like just about any other recently renovated space in the neighborhood, but the live room is great. It's not a huge room, but feels much larger with it's high ceiling and large wrap-around balcony. Lincoln Hall is brand-spanking-new and (thus) everything [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News When Brooklyn group Bishop Allen toured the country last fall, for some reason they didn't include Chicago in their itinerary. With no other tour dates in sight, they played an extra special show Friday night at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. The group played a succinct, one-hour set that mostly drew from their sophomore record, 'The Broken String' and a handful from 'Charm School' and 'Grrr...' Even though the band is supposedly recording their follow-up to 'Grrr...', no new songs [...]
They Shoot Music is Viennese videoblog that features musical artists who can "be vaguely described by the blurred out term indie." Over the past several years they have shot and posted tons of great sessions with tons of great indie artists, Bishop Allen, Camera Obscure, and Noah & the Whale, just to name a few. Just recently they posted a session that they recorded back in November with Akron/Family at a Turkish cafe and confectionery. They played two songs for the crew, the first being "Crickets" off of their 2007 release, Love Is Simple . And the second, [...]

Happy New Year, everybody. Anybody made any resolutions for 2010 yet? I don't usually make any, because I wind up breaking them in a matter of days or weeks. I think making high minded resolutions sets yourself up for disappointment. Instead, I just try to start the year with my sights on making this year better than the last. [...]
Coming in just under the wire... The top 10 best albums of 2009, according to TRUST ME ON THIS. 1. Tonight: Franz Ferdinand by Franz Ferdinand Last December, I made an early prediction that Franz Ferdinand's January 2009 album would be on my "best of" list, and indeed it is. Alex Kapranos and company have released a [...]
1. Metric - Fantasies Are we really meant to feel sorry for Metric's plight, as they ponder whether writing hooks and gaining popularity and wealth will eat away at their soul and indie cred? Of course they will! But to be an artist is (usually) to be emotional, so even superstar artists should remain able to write songs everyone can relate to (e.g., "Party in the U.S.A." and "Paparazzi".) Hmm... or maybe mega-stars put flash and riffs first? Whatever the case, I found Fantasies the most consistent, engaging, and enjoyable album of the...

GSL's Top Albums of 2009 revealed!
1. Songs that will sadly not be making our top 100 for the year ...but that we love nonetheless: Washed Out - New Theory Small Black - The Kings of Animals Blake Miller - Tomorrow Sorrow Orenda Fink - High Ground Tada Tátà - Hit the Wall Real Estate - Black Lake 2. Another thing that begs to be mentioned. Okay so maybe I'm begging for it to [...]
![[History Mixery] Boston Tea Party](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2200481_lg.jpg)
One of those historical events your taught about from an early age, the Boston Tea Party, occurred today some 236 years ago in 1773. Both symbolic and epic, the Boston Tea Party is often thought of as the event leading to the culmination of the Revolutionary War. There's nothing like George Hewes' first-hand account of the Boston Tea Party and a couple of tea tunes to celebrate some good ole' fashioned rebellion: "In about three hours from the time we went on board, we had thus broken and thrown overboard every tea [...]

To recap: As for My Favorite 50 Songs of 2009, I made a few rules for myself. First, a band can only appear once. Also, this is purely about singles I enjoy. For instance, I would never put Harlem Shakes' Technicolor Health on my favorite albums list, but "Sunlight" made it pretty high on this list because it's a great pop song. I like a lot of Grooms' songs and think they're probably better than many of these, for instance, but none of them made it onto this list because they work much better as a group of experimental [...]

Black Friday Mix A Dark, Dark Friday According to Macy's, the holiday shopping season has officially begun, and on this, the blackest of Fridays, I have the pleasure of working in retail once again. There'll be tears. There'll be blood. There'll be savings. And there'll be a myriad of shoppers willing to give us retailers the first two all in the name of that third. Whether or not you be the type to brave the crowds and eye-gouge your way to thrifty glory, I send you off with this [...]
