Electric Owls will be releasing their debut album, Ain't Too Bright , on May 5th. The band is lead by Andy Herod of the Comas , who has been touring extensively in the US and Europe with Bishop Allen to promote the forthcoming album. The first single off Ain't Too Bright , "Magic Show", is a solid and lilting electronic pop gem with airy choral backing vocals that are complimented by Herod's scratchy vocals. Have a listen and make sure to pick up Ain't Too Bright [...]
![Hot Docs Preview - Tiger Next Door [2009,Camilla Calamandrei]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1687911_lg.jpg)
Toronto - There's an epidemic in the US, and no it is not the Swine Flu (yet). Experts claim that there are more captive Tigers in the US then there are in the wild. Most of them are housed in shoddy conditions by breeders and despite the love that their owners have for them, many people have a different opinion. The documentary Tiger Next Door explores this issue, focusing on a particular individual named Dennis Hill, a self proclaimed tiger lover who houses 24 Tigers as well as cougars, black bears and lions on his acreage. The documentary [...]

Intro , Day 1 , Day 2 (day) , Day 2 (night) 1. The Wrens When I saw The Wrens were playing this year's SX, one of my travelmates knew of them so I asked him to describe their music. His exact words were "awesome and awesome-est." Said travelmate and I don't always agree on what constitutes "awesome" music (our common ground is Springsteen and Westerberg), so I wasn't sure what I'd find upon arriving to their noon set at the Hot Freaks day party this third [...]

Okay, so I'm not feeling the whole "writing" thing today. Why am I feeling so down? So bummed? Well, it has a little bit to do with me going out last night and jumping up and down to "Footloose" like I'm Kevin Bacon and it's 1984. Well, I'm sure Kevin Bacon wasn't 37 when he danced in that movie, and I'm not Kevin Bacon, anyway. I'm Lola, I'm 37, and I got cramps in my legs and fell down (and I mean I dropped to the floor) in front of my apartment and my legs have been [...]

Et encore, je vous ai pas mis le tee-shirt! EP Project , fait. The Broken String , fait. Grrr...

Grrr... is the third full length album by Brooklyn, New York indie rock group Bishop Allen. It was just released last month on March 10th and is a follow-up to their 2007 album, The Broken String . Bishop Allen formed out of the friendship of core members Justin Rice and Christian Rudder and took their name from a street in Cambridge, Massachusetts where the two lived after attending Harvard University. After their Harvard years of hosting a punk/indie radio show and being in a hardcore punk band, Rice & [...]
I'm a month or so late with this review, but here it is: Back in 2007, I was really impressed by The Broken String , Bishop Allen's second album. The sound was quite distinct from that of their rougher-edged first album, Charm School , and it was that collection of songs (some of which had previously appeared on Bishop Allen's twelve EPs of 2006) that won me over. I'm too attached to The Broken String to allow Bishop Allen's third album, Grrr... , to supplant it in my heart, but these new songs [...]
And here it is! The eleventh episode of my ongoing pmaCAST. I know this one is like 3 weeks late, but it's here and that's all that matters, right? Regarding the title: good ole @Beat623 , tweeted it to me after my little bout of writer's block. It's only appropriate since this entire podcast was inspired by my adventures on Twitter . For realsies. Every song was inspired by someone I follow. If I follow you, and you think you know which song you inspired, feel free to shout it out in the comments. I'm actually [...]

Bishop Allen 's "The Lion and the Teacup," of their latest release, Grrr , is NPR's Song of the Day today: Jungle metaphors, tales of international intrigue and philosophical ruminations inform Grrr ...It marks a clear evolution from the ennui-ridden, youthful indie-heartache that colored much of the band's first two albums, Charm School and The Broken String (which are compellingly angsty in their own right). This time, rather than simply feeling sorry for themselves, Bishop Allen's characters are fighting back. And so on. I still [...]
by apex The Shivers return with another new album titled In the Morning which was officially released today. Front man Keith Zarriello is a true music purist which is represented by the raw and lo-fi style of the new tracks. It's also the reason why The Shivers now operate as a duo made up of Keith and keyboardist . The record was recorded on a 4-track cassette deck in a room under the Queensboro Bridge. Zarriello comments that the process involved "No computers. No hired guns. No Nonsense." [...]

Here's what you all (well, hopefully one or two of you) have been waiting for: the first Sarcasm And The City Playlist! I am by no means a cool indie kid, but if you are stuck in the pop/rock rut (and if you listen to mainstream radio, then you are), hopefully these songs will help you put down your new Fray CD for a few hours. I If you want to download the MP3's of these songs for FREE, simply sign up [...]

It's been a loooong time since I did a Perch Mix. Not sure why exactly, as the Perch Mixes are my favorite part of writing this blog. But I had some time on my hands today, so here's a brand new Perch Mix for everyone. Enjoy! 1. Bishop Allen - Oklahoma [ mp3 ] 2. Steel Train - Alone on the Sea [ mp3 ] 3. Jenny Owens Youngs - Led to the Sea [ mp3 ] 4. Metric - Gimme Sympathy [ mp3 ] [...]
Discovered hot on the heels of their Bowery performance last Sunday is a three-song, in-store set by Bishop Allen at Philly's Art in the Age , wherein they (acoustically) rocked some of the songs they've been rocking (not acoustically) live on their tour. Included is "Penitentiary Bound," a cut from their debut Charm School which has been pretty stuck in my head since I heard it live: Art In The Age Presents...Bishop Allen "Penitentiary Bound" Live. from Art In The Age on [...]

Frank Yang A typical Sunday evening for me can go any number of ways. Catching up on the past week's television, working ahead a bit on the blog, taunting the cat with a piece of string, whatever. What is not a typical Sunday evening is standing in front of a PA cabinet with obnoxious dance music being pounded into my ears and midsection. And yet, this was my past Sunday at the Drake Underground. The why was because I had been invited out to see the next buzzy thing in British electro-pop, the [...]
