So Blurst of Times Fest is happening this Sunday in Brisbane. There's always a pal in every group who pulls out a stale Simpsons reference at a given time, but used in this context, against this ridiculous line up - Blurst of Times will get very, very loose. The guys from Bedroom Suck , Fans Group and Hairy Mexican have pulled together their collective forces to bring a lineup that includes: VIOLENT SOHO [...]
Our friend Toby over at Finest Kiss just ran a great re-cap on an article that ran over in Australia highlighting all the excellent bands working in Melbourne area. There's tons of great artists on the list, but one that I've taken a liking to is Bitch Perfect . My ears can see The Clean reference from the write-up, but I also think it speaks to the approach many of the acts overseas have taken, seeming to maintain a certain nonchalance about their writing and recording. That's [...]

Holy cow! There's a crazy amount of great music happening in Australia at the moment. The epicenter seems to be the city of Melbourne. It's like a rat colony down there, where the band population seems to be multiplying exponentially. You have likely already heard about the Twerps , Boomgates , Woolen Kits possibly Dick Diver and a few others, but that is only the tip of the old iceberg. If you live in that city and love janglepop it must be a veritable treasure trove just waiting to be pillaged. If you don't [...]

What have VICE, Sugar Mountain and Melbourne Music Week all got in common? Not smelly socks, no.... Something way more entertaining. Collectively, the a fore mentioned are throwing one hell of a good party. According to the information provided, it's going to be an " aural and visual spectacular to end all aural and visual spectaculars. This will be a night of scattershot, super-melodic garage-rock at [...]

I don't know about everyone else, but I am getting some real Karen O vibes from Sarah Kelly at the moment. Her latest project Good Heavens , has seen her teaming up with ex-Wolfmother lads Chris Ross and Myles Heskett . 'It's Not Easy Being Mean' is the first single from the groups debut record titled Strange Dreams, out August 17th through Rice Is Nice . Good Heavens - It's Not Easy Being Mean by Rice Is Nice [...]
All standouts. Jonathan Michell , Lower Plenty , Bitch Prefect and one from King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard .
Click here to view the embedded video. Bitch Prefect - 'Bad Decisions'. A friend of mine was called a Stuck-up Prefect the other day, mostly cause she is pretty but they could've gone with Bitch Prefect, it would've been way cooler. 'Bad Decisions' has been kicking around the internet for a while but it now has a video. Directed by Scott O'hara and shot/edited by Pat Telfer, it will be the first Single off their upcoming record 'Big Time', released on Bedroom Suck Records according to the notes on vimeo.

Nu Rave Brain Wave Top 10 Albums, Top 5 EPs, and Top 5 73s of 2011: Top 5 7″ of 2011: 05 Bitch Prefect – 7″ ( RIP Society Records ) This is really breezy and effortless pop songs done in the best kind of way from Aussie upstarts Bitch Prefect . 04 [...]

As a part of our year-end 2k11 coverage , I just wanted to remind everyone of the awesome bands that I've written about this year. These are all the Introducing pieces that I did throughout 2k11 about amazing new up-and-comers etc, in descending order: introducing: mr elevator & the brain hotel introducing: toto & the bad eggs (feat jerry tropicano, brown brogues & sex beet members) introducing: hypocrite in a hippy crypt introducing: [...]

I don't know about you, but unfortunately I have like, responsibilities, so I'm in on this Sunday eve, hoping to heal the last remnants of hangover, so I made this down-tempo mix. It still rules, though. 01 Bitch Prefect - Marilyn Monroe 02 Weed Hounds - Beach Bummed 03 Sonny & The Sunsets - I Wanna Do It 04 The Meanest Boys - Strangest Things 05 Heavy Hawaii - Beacons 06 The Beets - Time Brought Age 07 Dead [...]

MP3: Terrible Truths - Diamond Another terrifially energetic new wave gem from new Adelaide outfit Terrible Truths (PRO TIP: they're playing Rose Quartz's Melbourne Showcase this Saturday!). They've already got form with writing intriguingly skewed minor key surf pop curios - despite the fact that this new 7" is only their second release - but Diamond is a pretty impressive step up. There's a kind of ecstatic abandon to the clean production and zippy basslines that's pretty rare from a DIY punk band circa 2k11 but super refreshing. As with [...]
If my last mix was meant to augment yr sense of weird June gloom, then this one is definitely the antithesis of June gloom. Enjoy. 01 Bass Drum of Death - Young Pros (Daytrotter Session) 02 Ty Segall - Sad Fuzz (Live in Aisle Five) 03 Wavves - TV Luv Song 04 Bazooka - Shame [...]

MP3: Terrible Truths – Don Juan Way into this slinky new jam from Adelaide’s Terrible Truths (Adelaide what is up!), which is all straddling the line between what is post-punk and what is some floaty, abstract dream-pop or something, and maybe there’s also a lil bit of punk-funk in there, if I can say that without y’all vomiting everywhere. Don’t vomit, though! Or do. What do I care. On their Tumblr , Terrible Truths say they love (actually: “luuurve”) ESG and Delta 5, which is very cool and apparent in their music, [...]

MP3: Hit The Jackpot - Holiday Real odd-sounding balladry on the first cut from Hit The Jackpot's long-awaited new record; it's a chiming guitar sound & subject matter that's instantly familiar, but these dudes from Adelaide take it to a pretty brilliantly stilted and volatile place. As with their hometown buds Bitch Prefect , there's a weird synthesis of influences powering Hit The Jackpot - there's hints of Young Marble Giants' prehistoric twee, as well as post-punk and some classic Oz rock vibes. Holiday (the album) is out soon; in the meantime, grab [...]

Slacker pop is more than a sound, it's a lifestyle. It's skateboards, fence jumping and messy bedrooms. It's not brushing your hair, and wearing skirts when your legs are bruised. Adelaide, Australia trio Bitch Prefect nail the sound of careless boredom with "Bad Decisions". Slumberous guitar drags down hollow drums. A chorus of admittance replays itself over and over. "Bad decisions...bad life decisions...every time..." is sung with the shoulder shrugs of true disaffection. Yeah, alright. So what? Stream "Bad Decisions" below and listen to Bitch Prefect's self-titled EP [...]
Rose Quartz turned us onto this little from Adelaide, and we couldn't be happier. First of all, there's a fuck ton of really rad Australia bands, and quite frankly, I want to hear more jams like this. Bitch Prefect, besides having an amazing name, are releasing their debut Marilyn Monroe/Holiday in America 73 via RIP [...]

MP3: Bitch Prefect - Holiday In America Just real casual jangle-pop from these Adelaide bros. It's clean, straightforward, totally unpretentious but with that naive sense of melody & poetry that makes Bitch Prefect's soul sistas like Beat Happening and The Vaselines so great. These dudes are from the tiny but intensely great Adelaide underground scene; actually, guitarist/singer Scott O'Hara also does time in Hit The Jackpot. Bitch Prefect's debut 7" is out soon on RIP Society. myspace / facebook
