As the story goes, Minneapolis-based indie rap powerhouse Rhymesayers Entertainment started in 1995 when Atmosphere's Slug and Ant teamed up with Musab and Siddiq to launch their own label. Since then, they have helped establish the careers of everyone from P.O.S. to Blueprint to Brother Ali while branching out in numerous ways over the years. This includes a record shop, Fifth Element, and as of 2008, their own music festival in Soundset. And for the first entry in our ongoing series showing love to our favorite labels, we all came together to discuss our favorite Rhymesayers' releases over [...]

The image above is one of the two lackluster iPhone photos I took at last night's Atmosphere/Kill the Vultures/Big Quarters/MaLLy/BK-One show for the second annual Welcome to Minnesota tour. I did it to at least have something to share in this write up, but in all honesty that lineup was way too stacked for me to have been doing anything but enjoying the entire night. I made it to First Ave about 10 minutes before MaLLy's opening set, found an open spot on the floor next to the sound/lighting booth, and didn't leave for the rest of the [...]

After making a splash with his Brazil-inspired Radio do Canibal with fellow producer Benzilla, [...]

Our favorite masked emcee jumps on board for Exile's Mind The Gap remix of Rhymesayer DJ/Beatmaker duo BK-One and Benzilla alongside the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble's single "Tema Do Canibal". Check it out below, the track may be short, but it is very sweet. Make sure you pick up the Tema Do Canibal EP when it drops tomorrow. Order yours now over at Fifth Element .
Here's some a dope music video featuring BK-One and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble performing "Tema Do Canibal" live. BK-One's Tema Do Canibal EP will be out soon. Preorder it via Fifth Element .
Some DJs have light shows accompany them. Some do it the ole fashioned way with just a crate of records at their side. Rhymesayer's BK-One has a whole damn brass band. "Tema DO Canibal" off of his album Rádio Do Canibal gets the visual treatment it deserves with turntables running and trombones blaring. Live bands beat canned background noise every time. The music is awesome. The performance is organic with actual instruments in your face. Too bad you weren't there. So, watch a show you weren't able to attend and enjoy. [...]

With contributions from the legendary MF Doom, Brazilian maestro Arthur Verocai, West Coast producer Exile, Chicago's Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, famed São Paulo percussionist Helcio Milito and many more, BK has assembled a worldly collection of talent to reinterpret his music. Pre-Order: BK-One - Tema Do Canibal EP
When he's not manning the turntables for fellow Rhymesayer Brother Ali, DJ/producer BK-One is in the studio crafting ill, Brazilian-infused boom-bap with producer Benzilla. Together, they made one of the best hip-hop albums of 2009, Rádio Do Canibal , which featured Slug, Brother Ali, Phonte, the Grouch, Scarface, Freeway, and a slew of others. And over the past few months, BK and Benzilla revisited one of the album's finest tracks, the brassy instrumental "Tema Do Canibal," to turn it into a proper EP. Tema Do Canibal features six different versions of the song, including an Exile-produced banger [...]
So you know how BK-One has been dropping off demos and unreleased instrumentals from his amazing 2009 album, Rádio Do Canibal ? Well, it appears that dude's been messing with more than just the stuff gathering dust on his laptop. He has also put together a six-track EP that focuses on album standout "Tema Do Canibal". The Tema Do Canibal EP is set to feature a "Mind The Gap Remix" by Exile with MF DOOM , a second version of the track by [...]

Rhymesayers artist/producer BK-One will release the follow up to 2009's Rádio Do Canibal with Benzilla with another round of Brazilian flavor on Tema Do Canibal ep Aug. 30th on Itunes & green vinyl. With appearances by MF Doom, Brazilian maestro Arthur Verocai, West Coast producer Exile, Chicago's Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, famed São Paulo percussionist Helcio Milito and Mike 2600. BK-One - "Tema Do Canibal Mega-Mix" -mp3

BK-One and Benzilla collaborated to create Rádio Do Canibal back in 2009, one of the year's most creative and brilliant hip-hop albums. It remains one of my top-5 Rhymesayers-released albums in recent memory. Now it's 2011, and BK-One has decided to gradually release some extras from the original Rádio Do Canibal studio sessions. Included are instrumentals that didn't make the cut, and original or demo versions of album tracks. BK-One is releasing these songs via his Soundcloud page, and who knows how many more he'll let loose, so I strongly recommend subscribing so you don't miss [...]
I've always been a fan of the Rhymesayers movement - an organic blend of great music and a local scene that has seemingly resonated internationally. BK-One , Brother Ali's DJ-with his solo album Rádio Do Canibal a nod to Brazilian poet Oswald de Andrade-is leaking extras (which, oddly, sounds painful.) For Atmosphere fans he's dropped "Gittit" a track off of Slug's first demo and a couple unreleased instrumentals for his sample-headed hip-hop fanatics. They're smooth tracks beautifully chopped and screwed. I don't know what BK stands for, but it could be 'Beat King' after listening to [...]

I like to think I'm pretty good at getting some stuff done when I put my mind to it, but Marianne Dissard puts me to shame. Last time we had occasion to talk about her , she was finishing her debut film/Warhol tribute, Lonesome Cowgirls . With that crossed off her list, she's firmly back in the music camp, for now at least. When she came up for air recently, she shared the brand new video for The One And Only (the first single from [...]
