The Twilight Hours play Mears Park on July 28Lowertown St. Paul's picturesque Mears Park will once again be the host of a series of concerts this summer, including the Twin Cities Jazz Fest June 23-2
The first time I saw Buffalo Moon, Preston "Danger" Holm was naked from the waist up playing a clarinet and gyrating dangerously close to a keyboard. This wouldn't be worth mentioning except that this band is so rad that it actually took me a couple songs in to their set at their CD release at the [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Last week I said I would review the Black Blondie//Envelope/Dominique LaRaue show at the Carabar. Well Ron n Cara invented a vegan chocolate soymilk alcholic beverage so I don't remember details except asking the Minnesota Group Black Blondie repeadetly if Jordan, Minnesota was really full of child molestors. Given that they were a polished meeting point of classic R+B and downtempo trip hop they unsuprisingly didnt know what i was talking about. Show was really good, and fortuantely Davey Highben caught video for [...]
Of course Rhymesayers destroyed everything in it's path with another amazing year as P.O.S. , Brother Ali rose to new heights, rookie Toki Wright delivered his debut, and Brother Ali's DJ came through with a brilliant compilation. Is it still hip-hop if the boom-bap is replaced by lo-fi winding guitars with echoes of lost blues tracks and indie sensibilities? No, but with an charasmatic frontman in Eric Blair and a measured, thoughtful approach to songwriting they make for a winning combination. From the ashes of the short-lived Hyder Ali comes No Bird Sing Minneapolis' newest "we're not rap" hip-hop-influenced (sorta) bands. With more in common perhaps with Black Keys boogie swamp than anything related to rap music's street culture origins. And for No Bird Sing that's just fine. They celebrate the release [...]
