The Scottish Rite Theatre couldn't have been a more perfect setting for Borrisokane 's release of Murdering Teeth this Friday. The stage was an awe to behold with cutout trees of many greens surrounding the bands. Complimentary masquerade masks are amongst the other imaginative details that confettied the night. It was like a scene right out of Peter Pan, contrasting the sheer elegance of Wendy's world with the wonder of Peter's, making you feel like Wendy holding tight to Peter's hand as he shows you Never Never Land. You're flying one minute and missing mommy the next. [...]

In this edition, Black Books cover The Cardigans' massive '90s hit "Lovefool". Fun Facts: * "Lovefool" appears on The Cardigans' third album, First Band on the Moon, and was released internationally as a...
Tweet One day in the future, at the time of the invasion of the Intergalactic Crown Prince of Martalia, we have it on sound authority that the anthems of all the nations will be scraped. The peoples of the earth will unite under one banner to defend our increasingly frail lands. They will march into battle with only one song as their anthem - Favorite Place by Black Books. It's true, we've seen the future and it's all about Black Books dear friends. The alien invaders will quake at the sounds of the [...]

The debut album from Austin rockers Black Books was released in the UK last week. They kick off a tour across the pond tonight in London, playing alongside the Flaming Lips. I am a little spiteful about the fact that England seems to have gotten the jump on embracing this band. Spiteful, and jealous, and [...]

Dot To Dot Festival takes over the bank holiday weekend for another year this coming weekend. There are, once again, a huge number of bands playing across Bristol, Nottingham and Manchester and we've selected a few that we think you should spend your valuable time on... Black Books Making their debut appearance on the UK live scene, the band will be arriving here fresh off the back of playing two support dates with none other than The Flaming Lips. Not a bad way to start, eh? Beautiful [...]

There is so much good new local music happening lately; it's a bit overwhelming but it's a good problem to have. Tomorrow at Holy Mountain you can catch the live debut of indie pop/rock quartet Slomo Drags (including members of Cartographers , BOY , and The Couch ). On the bill you'll also find Boy + Kite , who are celebrating the release of their new EP, We Can Go Anywhere We Want (first 30 people to arrive will receive a copy of the new EP), and The Plastic Habit [...]
AUSTIN band Black Books, who release their eponymous debut on Monday, are celebrating with a cover of The Cardigans' classic Lovefool . The band, which also embarks on a first UK tour this month taking in London, Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham, said: "If Romeo + Juliet hadn't come out when we were angst-ridden middle schoolers it may not have meant so much to us... but it did, and we ate it up. "There's no denying that ridiculous soundtrack. "Since we started playing music together when this was all over MTV, we decided to cover The Cardigans' [...]
Videos today featuring the epic, driven - though dreamy - southern rock of Black Books , the murderous folk of Vandaveer , the post-punk and garage style of chromatic BLACK and their award winning video for 1, 2, 3, 8 and finally the brilliant new video from Crystal Fighters for latest single You & I . . . . [...]

Black Books, "Favorite Place (live)"

Some bands make music, some bands play shows, some bands even make an EP in their first three years, but there is one thing that sets Black Books apart from most bands: strength. The Austin quintet’s release of their Aquarena – EP is nothing short of its awesome title. Black Books lure you in with their dark, ambient atmosphere and surprise you with strong vocals and well-composed melodies. After close listening, Black Books managed to sneak in clever titles and subtle drums that give Aquarena its surprisingly strong sound that took me down [...]

Great stop motion video of needles and threads directed by Christophe Thockler for Black Books' "Favorite Place".
Deli Readers, The Deli Austin's Best of 2012 Readers and Fans' Poll for local emerging artists is over, thanks to all those who cast their vote in support of the emerging local bands and artists in our list of nominees. Congrats to psychedelic keyboard driven quartet Borrisokane for being The Deli Readers' Best Austin Artist of 2012. Kudos also to weird folkster hhhhhh and psych rock masters Black Books who placed second and third. [...]

Forming in 2010 in Austin, Texas the five piece indie rock band Black Books recently released their new EP called Aquarena , featuring 4 new tracks. Now while I do label this indie, you'll find yourself immersed in dream/pop as well, but it's a combo of genres that work well for these guys. Driving guitars and melodies that give you this out-of-body experience, you'll find yourself repeating these tunes a few times. Aquarena is well worth the price and if you do not believe me, then stream the record below. Fresh? [...]
The first seconds of Black Books ' Aquarena EP might threaten to linger on earth, but don't worry; before the first minute is up, they've strapped on their rockets and shot skyward. Glazing muscular space rock with dreampop pastels, this Austin, Texas ensemble perform their chemistry at full throttle. Pretty soon, we're out of oxygen: "I couldn't breathe / You're exceptional". The lyrics might be sweetly nostalgic ("I remember when / This was our favorite place"), but the instrumentation is all but wistful. Black Books look back with closed fists, rejoicing in the [...]

One of our favorite local bands Black Books just let us know that their brand new EP Aquarena is streaming for free over on their Soundcloud page. Now we don't usually do full album streams here on ATH, but it's time we started, and I don't see a better way to start than with one of the best Austin bands around. So have yourself a listen below and let us know what you think. We are of the opinion that it kind of rules.
