Wellington duo Black City Lights dropped a pretty impressive RMX EP today (06/11) via Stars & Letters Records. It features some very special contributions from a bunch of cool New Zealanders like Forest Spirits and Unmap , you can stream a couple of my favourites below: click here to download the EP

"Parallels" by New Zealand band Black City Lights , from the Parallels EP.

Black City Lights is the duo of Calum Robb and Julia Catherine Parr—a producer and vocalist team from Wellington, New Zealand. We got this album in our inbox over the weekend and have been streaming it since. Stars & Letters describes their sound as "M83′s Anthony Gonzalez and Zola Jesus had a baby, Drive Soundtrack, Little Dragon, Beach House, Dawn Golden & Rosy Cross," and we couldn't agree more. Stream their debut EP, Parallels via their soundcloud page [ here ] and check their video for Parallels below.

New Zealand-based duet Black City Lights stumbled into fame and glory with their sensational electronic debut, the Parallels EP. Their first, '80s-synth musical offering spread like wildfire after its March debut, landing them a record deal in New York City and connections to representatives for Beach House and Passion Pit. [...]

It's not often wonky, glitchy beats make their way on SBWR. Not that there's anything wrong with that! Today is an exception, from Black City Lights ' ' Parallels ' EP comes 'Collapsing Horizon', newly remixed by Unmap ( free download ). The original has been chopped up, removing the droney, chillwave feel and giving it a lighter, backbeat swing. The Wellington duo are currently working on a remix EP, due later in the year. Despite only having a few minutes of music to his name, elusive New Zealand based producer Unmap is rapidly marking himself out as a one to watch. With this new reworking of fellow Kiwi's Black City Lights he strips the track back to it's bare essentials, splicing the vocals into short millisecond bursts, underpinned by a ferociously addictive warped synth section. Whilst it's still early days for Unmap , with more tracks of this quality it's only a matter of time before someone picks up on his/her talent. Check out their remix of Collapsing [...]
New Zealand duo Black City Lights offer us a haunting and dance worthy new wave sound. After hearing this for yourself you’ll see that it’s sure to stay with you for months to come.

Combining an atmospheric intensity with dream like vocals, Wellington duo Black City Lights have released their debut EP Parallels. The publicity blurb claims that it musically sounds like M83 while vocally it's a mixture of Zola Jesus and Victoria Legrand from Beach House. The latter is somewhat helpful in describing Julia Catherine Parr's vocals but there's more than meets the ear in Calum Robb's electronic arrangements than mere comparisons to the [...]

This was supposed to be a productive week, those hours after work. But I ended up doing what any solid music nerd would: procrastinate by going through my records and singles, rediscovering old favorites and discovering new treasures hidden within my collection. We listened to The Smiths on repeat for a few days. I dug out an old single by The Rondelles. I got Andi into Crystal Stilts. And despite all this recounting of the past, of all the listening to albums already in my collection, I [...]

Fans of Teen Daze, Zola Jesus, Balam Acab (insert downbeat electro artist here) should check out the debut EP from Black City Lights . The Wellington natives have released 'Parallels' via fresh New York imprint Stars & Letters . Black City Lights keep it dark, progressive and cinematic - take a listen to the EP cut 'Get Away'. Hinting at Florence and the Machine, New Zealand duo Black City Lights never really want to reach the top of that mountain to scream their voices off. They are happier dwelling in a cave halfway up the mountain, chanting along with the xx songs. Calum Robb and Julia Catherine Parr [Read more]

New Zealand duo Black City Lights , comprising of Calum Robb and Julia Catherine Parr, are simply captivating. Their recently released EP Parallels is, from start to finish, a joy to listen to, with title track and album opener "Parallels" immediately creating an alluring atmosphere that is impossible not to get drawn into. Elegant synth work combines with airy vocals in a seamless manner, while pulse-pounding percussion drives forward an elaborate soundscape. What makes this duo so great is how their music comes across as enchanting so much as to draw you in, grab your senses and [...]

Vocally lead and produced by New Zealand’s Calum Robb and Julia Catherine Parr, Black City Lights take us on an expedition that’s more carefully laid out than a football stadium covered by a 10,000-strong domino exhibit - waiting to have its first domino pushed and then savoured intently as the rest of the audience watches the rest fall down. Connecting the bonds between the blissful, the melodic and the unparalleled, Black City Lights objectively give out a clear and textured coating, marred with stretchered mood & tempestuous ambience. ‘Get Away’ is their [...]
