I wasn't fortunate enough to be able to catch the first opening act of this show, but as soon as I walked in to the back room of the Black Cat on Thursday night, I was overtaken with low end bass and bright green lazers as the sludge metal band Zoroaster overtook the tiny stage and enthusiastic crowd that was present. The slow drone of the music formed dissonant echoes, and the front row of eager fans started to headbang in near-unison as if they were worshipping the band on-stage. It wasn't clear [...]

Black Cobra is one of those bands that when you hear them play you think, "There are really only two members in this band?" Formed in 2001, Black Cobra combines doom and sludge metal with a driving base in hardcore to create a sound that incorporates both fast riffs and slow drones. Signed to the record label Southern Lord , Black Cobra is in good company with bands like Grief, Wino and Sunn O))). With the assistance of Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou and his Massachusetts studio, the band [...]

photos by Samantha Marble [ Black Cobra is] a band of concision, pacing and respect for the ear and attention span, a bassless two-piece that plumps out its low end and whose epics last only six minutes or so... Whatever they do on their records, they can reproduce live, and slightly more vividly. They made loud music in a small room -- in fact, in this ideal dream of a small room -- sound as good as it can. They blazed through [...]

Gonna be a heavy-ass weekend in Columbus. Start off with with the sludgy/stoner/'70s-rock Saviours at Ace of Cups on Saturday night (w/ Ramming Speed, Charlie Hustle, and Yeti) and follow it up with the triple, head-bashing triple bill of The Sword , Black Cobra and Mount Carmel at Outland on Liberty on Sunday. Both of these shows are the ONLY Ohio shows on these individual tour itineraries. Take that Cleveland and Cincinnati! The Sword's 2010 [...]
Ahh, it's that time of year again. One of my favorite times of the year in fact. Christmas lights, rampant consumerism, the approaching NFL playoffs, the sun beginning to set before 5pm which causes depression and sickness, and a chill in the air that feels like it wants to choke you to death. Seriously folks, the thing I actually love the most about this season is all of the fabulous "Best of

First off, I feel obligated to preface this "Best of" list by admitting that this posting will in no way bolster my metal cred. If I presented this list to any of my metal friends, I would probably be laughed out of the room. I would prefer to consider this list as more of a layperson's guide to metal, a pair of floaties for those of you willing to get your toes wet in the vast, primordial ocean of metal. That being said, it's been a good year for metal. This year saw major releases from some of [...]

There are, in my mind, two Black Cobras : the radically-detuned, guitar-way-louder-than-vocals- and-drums sludge/doom masterpiece of Bestial , and... the rest of their albums. It's like after that they changed into a more-realistic version of Lair of the Minotaur , mixed with High on Fire : faster songs, more punk/ Motorhead influence.... Bestial to me is, easy, top 20 doom albums of all time. I used to not like their stuff after that, but I tell ya... ...this new stuff is really growing on me. [...]
Upon graduating from At a Loss Recordings to Southern Lord for their third album, 2009's Chronomega, Bay Area sludge purveyors Black Cobra clearly felt that the larger stage dictated a corresponding growth in maturity. Chronomega deviated sharply from the origins of 2006's Bestial, itself a myopic yet effective riff factory pumping out the kind of ...
We have a decent amount of new stuff this week, including quality releases from Skeletonwitch, Black Cobra, Hull, Fuck The Facts and more. This writer's opinion on all of it after the jump. 3 – The Ghost You Gave To Me (Metal Blade) 3 are an odd band to be on Metal Blade. They play [...]

by BBG Black Cobra (photo by Raymond Ahner) Two-man destruction unit Black Cobra returns with Invernal , the band's new LP due on 10/11 via Southern Lord. Invernal holds no tricks or left turns as to what we've come to love about the big-riff guitar duo, just another eight tracks of bulldozing sludge accompanied by a pounding drum assault. There is no dimmer switch for a band like Black Cobra, only off-and [...]
