Illustration by Gemma Correll Words by Phil Inzurriaga THE TIME IS NIGH. The culmination of my entire year. One week full of my absolute favorite things in the world that start with the letter b : Beer, Babes, Bands. Who knows where those three would rank on a normal day, but for one great week in March, it's all about BANDS. SXSW is one of the major jumpoffs for new bands. With the entire internet and virtually every magazine known to man in Austin, Texas, bands are made during this week. At [...]
Our comrades at MetalSucks recently scored an interview with guitarist GREG ANDERSON of ambient metal droners SUN O))). Anderson, who also co-founded prominent avant-metal label Southern Lord (BORIS, SAINT VITUS, EARTH,) revealed that his band's seventh album will be graces us sometime in the next few months, while spilling the beans on some exciting new [...]
Legendary dronesters Sunn o))) and record label Southern Lord share not just a penchant for original, outside-the-box thinking but a man by the name of Greg Anderson, who splits his time between playing guitar for the former and running all operations of the latter. In the interest of full disclosure I'm not really much of [...]

Missed the AC/DC tour? Are those Metallica tickets too much for the wallet? Eh, who needs 'em anyway? Well, anyone who's into metal and rock n' roll, actually. But, fortunately for those cutting back for the economy, there are some other acts to bang heads and slam dance to. It just takes some sharper searching, though we'll lend you a hand. San Francisco's heaviest duo metal band as of late, Black Cobra , recently announced that they're heading out on the road once again. After wrapping up a heavy as hell [...]

by theseseans (NYC) Yeah, yeah. I'm a day late on this. I know. Think of all the cool shit we all missed out on because I didn't post this yesterday!! Actually, it's CMJ, so I'm sure tons of cool shit did happen. Oh well. This week I went and saw The Bronx , Trash Talk , and Akimbo (you can expect some more on this show later..) and it was fucking awesome. Akimbo were great to finally see live, and they brought their entire new album Jersey Shores [...]
File Under: HOLY SHIT. Noisy trailblazers Today is the Day are all over the place lately - first they're tapped to play Maryland Death Fest, and now they're embarking upon a month-long tour with one of my favorite bands, dirty Dixie sludgemongers Weedeater. I personally never got into Today is the day, but as I [...]
As previously reported, sludge-encrusted doom legends Grief have reformed and will be hitting the road for a European tour, as well as a short East Coast jaunt with New Hampshire hardcore ragers Trap them. A few more dates of this utterly unmissable tour have surfaced, including a spot on the newly-instated second stage at Maryland [...]
Instead of posting a half dozen bite-size stories about the latest news from the doom/sludge underground, I decided to compile it all into one big nasty ball o'resin and load y'all up with enough album updates, tour dates, and general sludgefuckery to BLOW. YOUR. FUCKING. MINDS. Load up the bong, and read on... Cult sludge act [...]

Well.....not quite the whole world, but Torche will be doing two different US Tours (one with Coliseum and Clouds , another with Clouds and Black Cobra ) Europe with Pelican , and going to Japan with Coliseum. by crustcake gerf (NYC) Download: Goes Cube - "Gravestones Like Chess Pieces" [MP3] Hey people, quick update on some upcoming NYC-area shows for you. But first, who saw Big Business and the Melvins last night at Bowery or Wednesday at Music Hall? I must say, that was not the Big Business that I know and love last night. Maybe it was the full-time guitarist, or the new songs, or the fact that I couldn't see shit, but [...]

Up at Decibel, I have reviews of Blotted Science (new project of Ron Jarzombek), Devian (new project of Legion, ex-Marduk), and Rigor Sardonicous (slower-than-slow dooooom), as well as a feature on Portuguese black metallers Corpus Christii , whose recent record Rising is sick-sick-sick. The print version (#41, At the Gates cover) also has my live review of Neurosis/Earth/Saviours on NYE. Black Cobra - Red Tide Corpus Christii - Stabbed At Metal Injection, I have reviews of The [...]
Austin's The Sword may not be reinventing the wheel with their vintage stoner-doom bigriffs, medieval themes, and general bad-assery, but they do what they do with such efficiency and fervor that it hardly matters. Their "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach is commendable and, though they'll certainly never see any accolades for innovation absent some drastic shift in artistic direction, they manage to explore a style of music that's been done countless times before without sounding wholly derivative. In short, The Sword take a tried-and-true formula and give it new life. Last week, they [...]
