As you can tell by the lack of general show reviews in April, the month was a bit of a write-off as far as show goings are concerned. I did see a couple of great ones, but I didn't end up going to any of the ones that I was planning on checking out. Hopefully May will be a little bit more fruitful in that area. So let's stop regretting the past and move boldly forward into the future, shall we? Tonight, Friday May 1st , is the CD release party for Black Diamond Bay 's [...]

Last night, just hours before The Dears were set to kick off their six-week North American tour tonight in Toronto, the band's tour bus was stolen from the parking lot of a Comfort Inn in Montreal while the driver slept in his hotel room. Fear not, because the show will go on - but keep your eyes peeled for a misplaced bus. The coach was stolen from the Comfort Inn lot, located at 700 Blvd. in St. Jean, Pointe-Claire, Montreal, prior to a scheduled 6 a.m. departure. Thankfully, there was no [...]

Last week's episode of the Zygiella podcast featured a song that immediately caught my attention by a newer local band called Honest I's . The featured song was a powerhouse called Wristwatches , and what grabbed my attention was the raw power that the tune possessed. I really appreciated the way that the song covered a melodic range of emotions, while the vocalist's rough voice was spit out in a forceful gob-in-yer-face type of way. I figured that if the band could keep that energy going throughout the course of an album, then they'd certainly be [...]

(photo: Marieve Petit) Patrick Krief and George Donoso III were once guitarist and drummer respectively for The Dears before a personnel shake-up relieved them of their duties to Murray Lightburn's band. Along with Roberto Piccioni on keyboards, and Krief's cousin, Andre Bendahan on bass, they've reemerged as Black Diamond Bay . Originally performing under the moniker Krief, the band did some extensive touring , tightening up the songs and honing their chops together. The band just released their debut album, Calm Awaits , and lest you think there's animosity between [...]

Friday night of Canadian Music Fest was an enjoyable mix of bands that I've seen several times before, and others that I have meant to see but due to circumstances, never did. Most of my music loving friends were shocked to hear that I had still never gotten around to seeing Dinosaur Bones perform. Along with Still Life Still , they are currently the most well supported act in the city, and to say that my expectations were high is no mere exaggeration. I do quite enjoy [...]

Tuesday night was the big Stranded In Stereo event over at Great Scott in Boston, at which yours truly feigned being a club DJ (we prefer the term selector , since we don't beat match or possess a shiny shirt with zippers all over it). Below we recount for those of you not in attendance what exactly was blasted in your general direction via the sound system. But before we get to that we'd like to try to express how awesome we thought This Car Up was last night. We're relatively new to the Boston-based [...]

Tonight in New York at FONTANA'S it's our first ever THE RUMBLE: NEW YORK . Continuing our new relationship with STRANDED IN STEREO we're bringing our fourth monthly party night that highlights up-and-coming artists and indie music. We're bringing the three bands from the Boston RUMBLE down tonight for a taste of Manhattan. That means THE DEPRECIATION GUILD , CYMBALS EAT GUITARS , and BLACK DIAMOND BAY [...]

THE RUMBLE continues to roll into other cities, this month we expand to Boston and New York City by teaming up with STRANDED IN STEREO . Tomorrow night in Boston we open things up at GREAT SCOTT with three great up-and-coming bands: SPECTATOR - THIS CAR UP - BLACK DIAMOND BAY . The guest DJ for the night is Jay from CLICKY CLICKY MUSIC [...]

Cheers to the new year 2009 and another exciting event! Future Sounds and Stranded in Stereo are bringing the Rumble to the Boston area on January 27th at Great Scott (1222 Commonwealth Ave, Allston, MA). Our Rumble events present the best up-and-coming indie-rock artists who we think the world should know. This is your chance to catch them before they become huge. At 9 PM, Spectator, This Car Up, and Black Diamond Bay will start playing on stage. You and your friends better be there if you don't want to miss these great bands! [...]

Remember a couple of posts ago when I said that I used to really dig power pop but now I don't listen to it that much anymore? Well that post has given me the renewed hunger for a simple hook and a catchy melody that I once had on a regular basis. Sadly, Jason Falkner has obviously been ignoring my requests to release a new album every three months, so it's rather timely that I received a CD in the mail directly from Sweden by a man named Gustav Spetz . Saying that Gustav is [...]

Stranded in Stereo celebrates our new partnership with Future Sounds with another night of New York’s monthly concert series The Rumble (originally dubbed SIS Club Nights), featuring the best up-and-coming indie rock artists. This is your chance to catch them before they become huge. January’s Rumble features The Depreciation Guild, Bodega Girls, and Black Diamond Bay, and the DJ talents of Dissensous from Raven Sings The Blues . THE RUMBLE [...]

Dany Sloan from ExitFare has asked us to DJ ahead of and between sets on Tuesday the 27th at his debut monthly The Rumble event at Great Scott , Boston, which we're pleased to do. You can expect to hear new sounds from Boston, Philly and the U.K., as well as a few classics, because we're the kind of blog that will force you to confront the greatness of things like Lemonheads ' "Year Of The Cat" or The Trouble With Sweeney 's "The Snitch." We don't plan on spinning actual vinyl, so we'll have [...]

Cover presented by Story Hello and allo, happy Monday! It's a cold one today, down to a nasty 3°F today (windchill drops it to -1,000° or something fucked up like that), it's the kinda cold that gives you lips that weird blue feeling, no what I mean? Like you can feel the color blue, and your nose gets so numb, you are snotting on your face without even realizing it. No worries, everyone is, no need to be embarrassed. I [...]

It's a bit pornographic to watch B lack Diamond Bay frontman Patrick Krief play guitar. Not that he full-on sexualizes things like Prince, but the man definitely makes a serious O Face while rocking out on his instrument. Actually, so does drummer George Donoso, who is somewhere on the intensity scale between Keith Moon and Animal. This was the last of BDB's three NYC shows, their first real American assault since going from being a Krief solo project -- he and Donoso were both in The Dears up until a year or so [...]

As I highlighted a couple of days ago Patrick Krief and his new band Black Diamond Bay are in town this week for a series of shows. What I didn't really point out at the time is that fellow Canadians HILOTRONS and The High Dials share the headlining duties on this little NYC barnstorming tour. As you may recall , HILOTRONS most recent record, Happymatic was long listed for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize (and was picked by 4 bumpershine jurors [...]

I know we're all focused on The Election and all, and lord knows I've been watching way too much CNN lately (minus Lou Dobbs who may actually top anyone at FOX News in douche-i-ness), but the world goes on and Wednesday we're going to wake up very hungover and ask, "What now?" Well, musically, it's Krief Week here in NYC. That's Patrick Krief , former guitarist of The Dears and now frontman of Black Diamond Bay . BDB is the same band that toured here last Krief Week (July 2007) when they [...]

Black Diamond Bay at Pop Montreal (10/04/08) Photos : Jacinthe Fortier DOWNLOAD : Black Diamond Bay - "Blue Mace" As I mentioned a while back, Patrick Krief 's new band is called Black Diamond Bay and they're about to embark on a little tour which will bring them to NYC on Wednesday, November 5 for the first of three shows. The new self titled Black Diamond Bay LP came out in Canda [...]

When Bowie sang that line on his 1972 album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars , he was echoing the fantasy of many a teenage boy or girl. The children wanted to grow up to be garbagemen or astronauts or superheros, but at a certain age that changed and most teens would have given anything to make that wild mutation as a rock 'n roll star. However, only a precious few ever get to live out that dream. While Bono , and Sting and Chris Martin [...]

This year, the gang from After The Jump Fest and The Musebox have put together an AMAZING showcase at Pop Montreal (Oct 1-5). The show is on Saturday, October 4 at Petit Campus and the stellar lineup looks like this: 02:00 Invasions 01:00 The Disraelis 00:00 Dr. Dog 23:00 Mother Mother 22:00 Black Diamond Bay 21:00 The Mark Inside 20:00 Delta Spirit [...]

Toronto based music publishing company Bearsuit Publishing has been working hard to provide an affordable high quality music catalogue for television, film and commercial use. In order to commemorate the one year anniversary, The Drake Underground hosted an evening of awesome music on Wednesday night. The lineup was as eclectic as it was enjoyable and I'm glad to have been there to be introduced to some solid acts, as well as returning to see one of my favourites. As I often do, I'll start at night's end and work backwards. [...]
