The band hunkered down at Nashville's Tragedy/Tragedy Studio in spring 2009 and recorded the 13-song set in a two-week burst, right around the time their eponymous debut was released in the United States. "We initially were living in England and came up with 80 song [...]

We're not huge punk-lovers here at Metalisbad but this certainly seems worthy of mention... The (anti?) super group OFF! is made up of Keith Morris (Circle Jerks, Black Flag) with Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), Dmitri Coats (Burning Brides) and Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes). Vice Records is putting out four EPs [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Exclusive , Television On Friday night's episode of ' Last Call With Carson Daly ,' hardcore throwback Off! will make late-night television history by performing their debut EP in its entirety. Granted, the intense four-song '1st EP' clocks in at just over four minutes but still, no other band has done it. This is the television debut for the group, which is fronted by [...]
So many great frontmen either rest on their laurels or otherwise spiral downwards, and to a certain extent we excuse this state of affairs and even come to accept it. None of us ever really expect Ozzy Osbourne to truly impress us ever again. We might be entertained by his latest record, or even catch [...]

Court will come to order. This is somewhat embarrassing for me but I have a confession to make. Even though I am a big fan of old school punk rock, I only recently bought a copy of The First Four Years from Black Flag . I know, I know! Shame washes over me in waves, but hold on a second before you pass sentence. Allow me an attempt to defend myself. I may not have owned the originals, but that does not mean I have been unfamiliar with many of the [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News For a punk singer-songwriter, Ted Leo has written his fair share of lengthy tunes. But Sunday night at the Matador 21 birthday concert in Las Vegas, when Leo said "we've got two more" despite there being at least 15 minutes left in his allotted set, you knew something was up. There was. First, an epic, thrashing take on the 'Hearts of Oak' live favorite 'Ballad of a Sin Eater,' Leo [...]

I am so vegged out from the usual that I don't even have the capacity to think. Just starin' at the 'puter screen, giggling and slack-jawed. Here are some perfect videos from my youth. You know where to find the original songs (most likely in yer rekkid collection).
What makes not listening to this album in its entirety until later in life all the more embarrassing is the fact that I was the "singer" in a Black Flag "cover band", Las Banderas Negros, for three performances (four if you count the reunion). I use the quotes because we weren't really a band. We played five songs: "Rise Above", "Six Pack", "T.V. Party", "Police Story", and "Slip It In" (extended the solo and doubled the song). Good times. How I sang five songs, four of which appear on Damaged , and didn't [...]

Filed under: News , Video , New Music , Exclusive Hardcore punk legend Keith Morris is still just as pissed off today as he was in 1977 when he fronted the original version of Black Flag . And he still has as much to get off his chest as he did in 1979 when he formed the Circle Jerks . Old age hasn't tamed the beast in him either -- he still feels like being loud and [...]

But when it came to his latest back-to-basics project, Off!, the stars aligned after a failed attempt at another collaboration. Originally, Morris and Burning Brides frontman/guitarist Dimitri Coats attempted to form a group with several other musicians, but the project [...]

ZINE COMIC REVIEW: Henry & Glenn Forever is no Boiled Angel or Judy Blume but it is pretty funny I will admit. I could not resist the premise of a couple 90's indie superstars being wrung through the muck by some punk ( Tom Neely ). The diary entries and notes between characters are the funniest part which are hand scribbled. The artwork for exception of a few panels and cover is not so great sorry to say. The cover has obvious Pettibon sensibility and reference to Family Man spoken [...]
Here's the thing: When you ask just about anyone to delineate their favorite rock documentaries, there are a handful that constantly pop up. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart , Anvil! , Dig! , Instrument , The Fearless Freaks , Gimme Shelter and Don't Look Back invariably find their way into pretty much any must-see lists friends pass your way. So we decided to detail five documentaries about bands that you might not have seen. These include some fascinating stories which you may have heard before. A couple, [...]

Wanda Jackson, the "Queen of Rockabilly" herself, has announced details for her highly anticipated covers record, The Party Ain't Over , an 11-track LP produced by Jack White featuring guest performances by My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemel, Jackson Smith, Karen Elson, Raconteurs/Greenhornes members Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence, country singer Ashley Monroe, and, of course, Jack. The album , which will be jointly released by Nonesuch and Third Man Records on January 25, includes covers of songs spanning a century, such as Jimmie Rodgers' 1930 song "Blue Yodle #6," "Nervous Breakdown" (presumably a Black Flag cover), [...]
Filed under: The Hit List It's college rankings time, so we've rated the top 20 universities for their matriculation of musicians. For example, bands like the Commodores (Tuskegee University), Talking Heads (Rhode Island School of Design), Pink Floyd (University of Westminster) and Hall and Oates (Temple University) have met while pursuing higher education. So even if you're not into that whole cracking the books thing, [...]

I'm sure I'd have no problem finding countless jazz aficionados to disagree with me (including my brother), but for my money, the illustrations Raymond Pettibon provided for the SST releases of the 70s and 80s are every bit as indelible and iconographic as Francis Wolff's celebrated mid-century jazz photographs for Blue Note. Of course, I'm probably biased, seeing as how I treasure so many of those records, particularly those of Black Flag, and have even been known to don a [...]
:: Richard Swift gave a rundown of all the songs he and Damien Jurado recorded for Other People's Songs Vol. 1 . :: It only took five months, but Duff McKagan is done with Jane's Addiction . :: Narduwar took on Greg Ginn and Ron Reyes of Black Flag . :: In case you've been waiting patiently for naked Pete Doherty pictures, you've been rewarded for that quiet steadfastness. :: Mumford and Sons [...]
Waved Rumor's Rock Clip of the Week is two videos of Black Flag doing the classic punk anthem 'Rise Above' - both claim to be dated from 1984, though by the looks of Henry Rollin' hair in both, that claim is debatable. Click here to read some great fan stories of the Flag. But in any case it's a great start to the weekend. Now go forth and Rock ! And from 1984, it's a hairier Henry Rollins and Black Flag doing 'Rise Above'
