As far as collaborations are concerned, anything goes in this day and age. Punk icons have been spotted mingling with teen princesses, while Weezer has made an entire record featuring contributions from Lil' Wayne and Butch Walker. It may very well be a sign of the impending apocalypse, but a proposed collaboration between comic singer "Weird Al" Yankovic and members of Boston alt-darlings Pixies might just be too amazing to fathom. The collaboration between this unlikely pairing will occur at a benefit in Los Angeles. Yankovic is scheduled to appear on stage with the band to [...]

Filed under: Video , Exclusive Ever since their sold-out comeback tour in 2004, Pixies "reunions" have come around periodically, with their latest regrouping in honor of the 20th anniversary of their landmark 1989 album, 'Doolittle.' In the wake of a predictably successful run abroad, the US leg of the tour will kick off in Los Angeles on Nov. 4. The band will spend the following month taking 'Doolittle' to American audiences nationwide. "I guess we're kind of like a Led Zeppelin that tours," frontman Black [...]

Song: From Zero Down Artist: The Nomads Album: Thoughts of a Madman Comments: This album is 21 minutes long and mostly covers, but it kicks ass for all twenty minutes and doesn't degrade the originals one bit. A rare feat for a garage rock album. Swede's know hot to keep it fresh -- even 20 year old bread. Song: Get It Hot Artist: AC/DC Album: Highway to Hell Comments: I only began to love AC?DC when I heard Bon Scott's vocals. NO [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Last night at Dante's in Portland, Ore., Black Francis , aka Frank Black , stood alone in the spotlight and played acoustic versions of Pixies songs and his solo work. Diehard Pixies lovers mainly comprised the packed Musicfest NW audience in hopes the fellow Portlander would oblige them with some classic tunes. It wasn't until an hour into Francis' two-hour set when their wishes were granted. Donning a black leather jacket and black rimmed glasses, Francis [...]
Having spent last weekend soaking up all that All Tomorrow's Parties has to offer, I realized that there is really no other festival in the world quite like it. It's a community formed in a weekend for the sole purpose of listening to some great music, and it's an amazing experience. Listening to Wayne Coyne blabber on and on about how thankful he was to get a chance to curate the event you realize how special it is to do that. So with both thoughts in mind I present to you my Top 10 list of potential curators. None have [...]
We all know by now Portland, OR has grown into a Mecca for up-and-coming indie bands, so it makes sense for the city to host a major (and surprisingly affordable) music fest every year. Enter the ninth annual Musicfest NW sponsored by Willamette Week . The festival began in 2001 under the moniker of NXNW (becoming the Pacific NW's version of SXSW), then changed its name and direction in 2006 to focus on both burgeoning local acts and semi-mainstream acts. As reported earlier in the summer , the five-day event commences on September 16th at various [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Live It Out , Canada Sometimes youthful exuberance outweighs experience -- but not when it comes to the Pixies . Taking the stage just before dusk on Day One of Toronto's Virgin Festival , the legendary indie band -- who influenced everyone from Husker Du 's Bob Mould to Kurt Cobain -- showed exactly what makes them so special. There was no glitz or flash to be found, aside from occasional puffs from [...]

Yes, another themed day, say hello to 'Classic Saturday'. Partly because I feel some older music deserves recognition and partly because I feel lazy after returning from a full day at work. This Saturday, the classic song is: Pixies - Motorway to Roswell One of the standout tracks on much underrated 'Trompe Le Monde', 'Motorway to Roswell' features Francis on vocals and boasts a refrain that will be stuck in your head for days - "Last night he could not make it, he tried so hard but he could not make it." [...]

A Great Collection of Cover Songs: So, we don't do covers posts anywhere near as often as I would like - but that's due to the fact that there is so much great new, original material out there. We first ran one of these several months back and it was wildly popular. Thought this would be a nice way to kick off your weekend and share some interesting covers with our newer readers. There's nothing like great musicians paying respect and showing their love for the songs that get them through the day - the [...]

I was fighting a cold last week, so I didn't make it out at all. Hopefully this week is different. Some cool stuff going on in town.... My only quibble with "New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love and Rockets" is the "tribute" part, which seems a bit presumptive. Call me stuffy, but only the truly seminal bands should get tributes; the good ones can be saluted, and the others, well, covered . In a decade-plus of tailoring the Bauhaus aesthetic to make it safe for radio, Love and Rockets proved themselves a very good band (especially live, given the set I witnessed at Coachella 2008). They were are a band whose influences were influential, as opposed to today's hitmakers, whose [...]
Woo-hoo! Americans had been feeling pretty dang jealous since Pixies announced that they would perform their classic album Doolittle in its entirety — in the U.K. and Europe. But don't buy your plane tickets just yet, stateside fans. It looks like Black Francis, Kim Deal, et. al. will be bringing their show back to the U.S. this fall for a nine-city, 14-date tour in honor of the album's 20th anniversary. I think it's safe to say that this monkey's going to a Pixies show. Aside from Doolittle 's richly [...]
Another incident of an indie heavyweight playing in a very small Bay Area venue. This time around, it's Frank Black , under the other pseudonym Black Francis , scheduled to play at the Hotel Utah Saloon on August 7th. While Frank Black/Black Francis goes by many names ( Frank Black & the Catholics , Black Francis , Grand Duchy , and his real name: Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV ), he is best known for his time as frontman for the [...]

Love and Rockets were another one of my gateway bands in high school that opened up a whole new world of music to me. The band's fluke Top 40 hit, "So Alive", represents very little in terms of the breadth of its myriad musical styles. Despite being 3/4's of the legendary art-punk pioneers, Bauhaus , Love and Rockets successfully threw off that heavy gothic shadow to explore a slightly more optimistic worldview. Introducing bizarre humor by way of its alter-ego, The Bubblemen, Love and Rockets certainly elevated its strange, albeit, mysterious appeal. Over the course of its first [...]
