A few weeks ago, @Sawyer_w took me to see Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears at The Fillmore. I had only listened to a few tracks and had no idea what to expect. The crowd was considerably older, which is surprising since the band was signed at SXSW in 2009. The opening band, The Sheepdog s, put on a stellar performance. Their crazy guitarist is certainly meant to be rock royalty! With the crowd fully amped, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears came on stage and wasted no time getting down to business. Even though [...]

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Austin garage soul band - new album sound like Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, Eli Paperboy Reed. Black Joe Lewis took it all in-Delta and Chicago blues, Memphis soul, Detroit garage punk. Crossover between Howlin' Wolf, Wilson Picket, James Brown and MC5 or Stooges, such like Rolling Stones Exile on Main Street, or even Betty Davis's hard-funk. Released on the same record label, Lost Highway, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears 2009 first album Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!, was bluesy, and Stax-influenced. Scandalous was produced by Jim Eno (Spoon's drummer) sounds [...]

For years (13 years, to be exact), it seemed that '90s indie rockers Archers of Loaf were gone for good. Then, this past January, the North Carolina-based foursome reunited for a surprise set in their home state. To the delight of fans everywhere, a fall reunion tour was announced a few months later, followed by a performance at Sasquatch Music Festival. The hype didn't stop there; in early June, Merge Records announced plans to reissue all four of AoL's studio albums, beginning with their debut LP Icky Mettle on August 2nd. Later that month, the group [...]

Listening to Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears on record and seeing them live are two rather entertaining experiences themselves, but in the new video for "Mustang Ranch" from their latest LP - Scandalous - the Austin, TX-based outfit takes it to a whole new level. The Justin Buschardt-illustrated, Tad Catalano-animated clip finds the group animated and in search of a "ham glazing" at the world famous Mustang Ranch. Clocking in at nearly four-minutes it video opens with the cartoon versions of Lewis and bassist Bill Stevenson plotting a visit to the brothel as they drive from Salt [...]
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Livin' in the Jungle

After seeing the lineup of Sasquatch this year I almost wanted to ditch that whole "photographer" gig and just go as a fan. A fan of so many bands throwing down at the festival that I wanted to stay and watch each act to the end (a luxury not given to those who have 50 bands to cover and only the first 10-15 minutes or so of each performance to shoot). Their songs had penetrated my most often selected playlists and had often sound-tracked my long days editing content at Amazon or bike rides through Venice and since the move, [...]
There is nothing quite like a great summer weekend to bring on the Monday Morning Blues. To help make things a bit more tolerable as we kick off the working week, with our eyes on the prize of a extra day or two off thanks to Independence Day, I thought we'd turn to Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears to help keep us in good spirits. Earlier this year, the Austin-based act released their sophomore album Scandalous , which features their modern take on classic funk and garage soul. Let's check out the [...]

Oh, Bonnaroo . You do it to us every time. Year by year, over 80,000 people make the pilgrimage to a field in the middle of nowhere, Tennessee to camp for four days in the blistering heat with little to no refuge and more dust than anyone should be able to handle. That sounds kinda miserable, right? How then, you might ask, did Bonnaroo make it to this, their 10th year? I think that can be summed up in their newfound theme song, by the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, "Bonnaroo (Feel the Magic)". [...]
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears stopped by The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday night to perform "Livin' In The Jungle" from their recently released third album Scandalous . The Austin blues ensemble, dressed like "Jehovah's Witnesses," according to Letterman, turned out a performance so groovy, it easily could have been tapped in the late 19702s. Fresh off his weekend at Bonnaroo, frontman Joe Lewis jammed on a red guitar, matching his rose-accented leather suit, while the horn section completed the retro set. It may have been hard to tell what Lewis was singing [...]
Here's some soulful tunes from Austin's Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears . The group inspired by the sounds of rock 'n' roll, funk and blues among others, released their second full-length Scandalous back in March. The visuals are for the album's title track 'Livin In The Jungle', plus a little bonus track from their debut album Tell 'Em What Your Name Is. Gunpowder
Fitz and the Tantrums ::: photo by Josh Lovseth It appears that we have collectively left our brains somewhere East of the mountains and while we're awaiting their return from Ellensburg, we thought it was time we shared some daily photos from Sasquatch. You can see all of our photos from Day Three on our Flickr, [...]

"Not considering this opening worthy of more attention, I continued our pursuit to the Northwest, being desirous to embrace the advantages of the prevailing breeze." - George Vancouver, 17th century English explorer Breathtaking describes a lot of things. It's typically a "go-to" adjective for anything remotely awe-inspiring. For Sasquatch! Music Festival , it's the only word that works. There's little room for where it doesn't work, come to think of it. Even the drive in from Seattle, WA is enough to yank tears from the eyes. Driving through the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, [...]

MP3: Black Joe Lewis - Bitch, I Love You (Baby Bollox Master Remix) Tweet

This summer playlist is somewhat of a time warp but not the kind you would think because more than half this music I consider perfect for summer because of it's tone or theme. The lyrics or title might mention the sun or burn the sort of imagery that you'd want in the perfect beach movie soundtrack. It's Summertime MP3 by The Flaming Lips from Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots This song always creeps into almost every playlist but still qualifies since it's movie like. Booty City MP3 by [...]
