Recap and Highlights: SXSW ’13 – The Music Never Stopped

Recap and Highlights: SXSW ’13 – The Music Never Stopped There's a band out on the highway, They're high steppin' into town, It's a rainbow full of sound, It's fireworks, calliopes and clowns. Everybody dancin'. C'mon children, C'mon children, Come on clap your hands.  Sun went down in honey and the moon came up in wine, You know stars were spinnin' dizzy, Lord The band kept us so busy we forgot about the time. - The Music Never Stopped (Barlow/Weir) For four days the 27th annual SXSW Music Festival was the equivalent of my own living jukebox. A cacophony of sounds emanated from [...]

SXSW Friday: The Weekend, Wavves, The Zombies, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, John Hiatt, Richard Thompson

SXSW Friday: The Weekend, Wavves, The Zombies, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, John Hiatt, Richard Thompson With many of the artists that make SXSW so appealing fleeing before the weekend, Friday usually provides one last chance to catch bands that you've missed so far on the theory that you'll catch them later. On a separate note, the two things I think I've enjoyed most when they occur: a lead singer talking to the audience while forgetting that their reverb level is still set to maximal distortion and a set simply ending without fanfare as the band simply puts down their instruments and everyone disperses. The latter is such a corporate way to end a [...]

A few weeks ago, @Sawyer_w took me to see Black Joe Lewis &... A few weeks ago, @Sawyer_w took me to see Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears at The Fillmore.  I had only listened to a few tracks and had no idea what to expect.  The crowd was considerably older, which is surprising since the band was signed at SXSW in 2009.  The opening band, The Sheepdog s, put on a stellar performance.  Their crazy guitarist is certainly meant to be rock royalty!  With the crowd fully amped,  Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears came on stage and wasted no time getting down to business.  Even though [...]

Archers Of Loaf - Web In Front
For years (13 years, to be exact), it seemed that ‘90s indie rockers Archers of Loaf were gone for good. Then, this past January, the North Carolina-based foursome reunited for a surprise set in their home state. To the delight of fans everywhere, a fall reunion tour was announced a few months later, followed by a performance at Sasquatch Music Festival. The hype didn’t stop there; in early June, Merge Records announced plans to reissue all four of AoL’s studio albums, beginning with their debut LP Icky Mettle on August 2nd. Later that month, the group [...]

Video: Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears – “Mustang Ranch”

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Mustang Ranch
Listening to Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears on record and seeing them live are two rather entertaining experiences themselves, but in the new video for "Mustang Ranch" from their latest LP - Scandalous - the Austin, TX-based outfit takes it to a whole new level. The Justin Buschardt-illustrated, Tad Catalano-animated clip finds the group animated and in search of a “ham glazing” at the world famous Mustang Ranch. Clocking in at nearly four-minutes it video opens with the cartoon versions of Lewis and bassist Bill Stevenson plotting a visit to the brothel as they drive from Salt [...]

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Livin' in the Jungle

Sasquatch Through the Lens of Dave

Sasquatch Through the Lens of Dave After seeing the lineup of Sasquatch this year I almost wanted to ditch that whole “photographer” gig and just go as a fan.  A fan of so many bands throwing down at the festival that I wanted to stay and watch each act to the end (a luxury not given to those who have 50 bands to cover and only the first 10-15 minutes or so of each performance to shoot).  Their songs had penetrated my most often selected playlists and had often sound-tracked my long days editing content at Amazon or bike rides through Venice and since the move, [...]

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Livin' In The Jungle
There is nothing quite like a great summer weekend to bring on the Monday Morning Blues. To help make things a bit more tolerable as we kick off the working week, with our eyes on the prize of a extra day or two off thanks to Independence Day, I thought we'd turn to Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears to help keep us in good spirits. Earlier this year, the Austin-based act released their sophomore album Scandalous , which features their modern take on classic funk and garage soul. Let's check out the [...]

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears – Booty City

Black Joe Lewis - Booty City (Live from the Bing Lounge)

Festival Review: CoS at Bonnaroo 2011

Festival Review: CoS at Bonnaroo 2011 Oh, Bonnaroo . You do it to us every time. Year by year, over 80,000 people make the pilgrimage to a field in the middle of nowhere, Tennessee to camp for four days in the blistering heat with little to no refuge and more dust than anyone should be able to handle. That sounds kinda miserable, right? How then, you might ask, did Bonnaroo make it to this, their 10th year? I think that can be summed up in their newfound theme song, by the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, "Bonnaroo (Feel the Magic)". [...]
