Tuesday, February 24, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: Well, what's to be thought of Tinted Windows? Yesterday the band (or act?), which features faces from Hanson, Fountains Of Wayne, Smashing Pumpkins and Cheap Trick, debuted a video packed with snippets of sugary sweet pop tunes. Personally, I think I'm still on the only-curious side of things. Here's an EP. Enjoy. : Black Joe Lewis And The Honeybears - Bitch, I Love You : I'd expect those of that are local to be [...]

Quickly, I'll tell you Say Anything is in the studio working on their next album, but for the life of me I really can't find out anymore information about it. Their poorly designed website has a video up on it , but the blurry, white on black text turned me off and so I didn't try to dig further. *~*~* Speaking to Rock Sound magazine recently, 30STM frontman Jared Leto revealed thoughts on giving away their third album: "Anything can happen, you never know what the future will hold. Maybe we will just [...]

So, today is the Valentine's Day, the most wonderful holiday created by a card company ever. I hope you enjoy the day with the man or woman in your like and cherish each day with each other like it's the last one you will ever spend together. So, to get you in the mood here are a couple of numbers you might like. Each is from opposite ends of the lovey-dovey spectrum. For the haves... MP3: Yeah Yeah Yeahs [...]

Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears - Bitch, I Love You
We're not ones to get too sentimental around here, but we couldn't pass up this opportunity to post a great track from Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears (not to be confused with UK blues act Big Joe Louis ). Although they're a current act, you'd never know it. The eight-piece ensemble pumps out dirty garage-soul that evokes the high-octane grit of luminaries like Otis Redding , Little Milton and James Brown (think Black Keys and North Mississippi All-Stars [...]

black joe lewis is a modern day soul man. he started playing guitar in his 20's while workin at a pawn shop in texas and has a standing job shucking oysters and delivering seafood in austin. joe's got soul and he knows how to rock, imagine early mick jagger if he really was black and from the south add in some otis redding, two hand fulls of james brown and a pinch of h.r. from bad brains and bam! you got joe. the 7 peice honeybears got the sound of '60's soul down tight, able to jump out take control of [...]

That's right boys and girls, we are giving away the new EP from Austin's Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears. But, more specifically we are giving away a limited edition 10" vinyl version of the record. So, the first person to send me and email with "I like big booty women" in the subject line will be the winner. Remember, this is a limited edition version, there aren't that many of them available. So, hurry! [...]

Ume, the killer female-fronted trio I have recommended to you many times before, finally have some brand new studio tracks for your adoration. The Sunshower EP, which was just celebrated with a release party over the weekend, is a big step forward for this band. Produced by Frenchie Smith (Trail of Dead, Dandy Warhols), the EP captures the raw energy of their live show, with local rock guitar goddess Lauren Larsen laying down sweet hooks and melodies over serious guitar riffs. Read what people have been saying about Ume at the link . E-mail me [...]

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears are a fantastic blues/soul band out of Austin, Texas. It seems (as usual), that Austin is currently overflowing with all kinds of musical talent, and this band is no exception. Led by Black Joe Lewis, the band mixes his soulful, James Brown reminiscing lyrics, with huge, big band esque instrumentation. Their self titled EP was released today, and features the single "Bitch, I Love You." Sometimes it's hard to express love for someone, but despite the title's aggressive, direct message, it is obvious that Joe Lewis in fact, does loves his bitch. At the [...]

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears were recently featured on Daytrotter, offering up four live studio cuts from their self-titled album and an unreleased cover of a Junior Wells original. Here's an except from the article: "It's merely an extension of the raw and just plain honest music of Joe Lewis and his Memphis-flavored band of guitar, horn and pianah players. This band of merry – and lascivious – young men have the scent of last night's woman or women, a whole carton of smoked Camels, a boozy romp and lived in clothing – coming [...]

The greatness of Austin, TX's Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears is the latest Daytrotter Session. If you aren't familiar with BJL&THB he does a mix of soul and blues. To me he's a mix of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Ray Charles. But, I kinda feel bad about liking him now that I've read this . Interesting tidbit: Jim Eno from Spoon drums along side his drummer Matt Strmiska on "Big Booty Woman." [...]
Being a great live band can be a blessing and a curse. Although your explosive performance may get people in the door and nurture a healthy reputation, it can also disappoint listeners when they actually pick up your album. As much as I love Ted Leo, "The Ballad Of The Sin Eater" will never live up to the volcanic tambourine-on-skull live incarnation that I witnessed as a college freshman. The same goes for "Via Chicago" by Wilco, and every Cold War Kids or My Morning Jacket song. I saw Austin rockers Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears [...]
The word "fun" may be getting a little derivative for some. Graham Williams, owner of Transmission Entertainment, probably took a long, hard look at the ever-growing list of year-round music festivals , and saw a lack of the word "fun" in those titles. So what's the man to do? If I were in the position to name my own music festival, I probably would have picked a word that accurately describes the experience one might encounter myself. Book a festival in Los Angeles and invite the world's biggest DJ's? Name it the "Dance Dance Dance Festival." If it were [...]

Zach Ernst @ Austin City Limits Festival 2008 (Photo Rollo & Grady) There would be no Black Joe Lewis and The Honey Bears without guitarist Zach Ernst. Joe was frustrated, ready to quit music and even thinking about moving to another city. Zach was a huge fan of Joe's and told him that he could put a band together if he was willing to give it another try. And, the rest is history. I recently caught up with Zach on the phone in Pittsburgh while the band was touring [...]

There's nothing worse than a disjointed rock show. When there's a lack of flow and the music rises and then falls, it's dangerous territory to deal with, especially for the headliner. Fortunately, that job went to the Texas indie act, Okkervil River , this past Tuesday at Chicago's own Metro. Without its raucous performance, the bill would have suffered tremendously. Then again, you're looking at a weekday concert. Tuesday night is tough. It's not as demeaning as Monday, but it's not exactly Wednesday, either. When fellow Texans, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears , [...]

Uncle T continues with Austin City Limits , Day 2, delving into gospel, RnB, soul, and funk. I hear a lot in the Lee Boys that reminds me of the Allman Brothers at their peak, and I'm aware that the Allmans took a lot of influence from black southern blues. The Lee Boys Alvin Lee of the Lee Boys Fantastic set from this Jacksonville, FL band of [...]
