Tweet Sometimes an album catches you a bit off-guard. Sometimes every second track on an album catches you off-guard. That's certainly what happened with me on listening to Silver Tongues ' "Black Kite" , but it's cool: I like surprises. Things get off to a great start with the album opener, "Highways" . I can't be the only person who hears that big, two-chord drone and thundering percussion (read foot-stomping and hand-clapping) and thinks of Joy [...]
New band steps comfortably into the 1990s. The great R.E.M./U2 collaboration that never happened? That's the impression you might get from Black Kite's opening hymn, "Highways", but then Silver Tongues shifts into high-energy noise with "Ketchup"--which is still not too far from early U2--before getting all acoustic on the beautiful and mysterious title cut.Shifting from one mood to another is not really a forsaking of style or vision, it's a demonstration that this Kentucky outfit has the talent and ability to reach...
Here we have two east coast bands in Black Kites and Convulsions pairing up for this split release out on Glory Kid/Adagio830. This would be the first time for me hearing Black Kites, which plow through six tracks of max effort heavy hardcore on the a-side of this one, or five if you want to get technical about it. If fierce/passionate hardcore in the area of Disembodied , His Hero Gone , etc. is your thing, then I imagine these guys are already part of your record collection that features numerous copies [...]
Black Kite is by no means a perfect album, but this debut from Silver Tongues shows skyward ambition, opening with a prayerful exhortation and closing with an angelic vision. In between, the effervescent vocals of David Cronin echoes through the songs, sometimes with the church hall ambience of a Fleet Foxes hymn, and at other times booming with the polished bombast of My Morning Jacket. It's very much still a work in progress, with the band searching for its identity through the album, prompting the listener to look out for and witness the moments where they do [...]
One of my favorite aspects of writing a music blog, is the amount of talent I get in my inbox that really have limited to no coverage. It's wild to truly see how many bands are out there on their hustle trying to get noticed. That being said, the Louisville, KY band Silver Tongues was a nice surprise to a week of meh submissions. They are releasing an album come October 25th titled Black Kite , which is a mix of alternative, rock, pop, soul, and even some hints of folk influence. In fact, in some moments [...]
Described as music initially made in solitude as a pet project, Silver Tongue's Black Kite spiraled into something larger and grander that eventually comprised ten musicians and a choir. The music of Black Kite is not merely an album of songs. Taken together as a whole (this is an album to played straight through indeed) it's like one elegantly elongated song. For all its individual tracks they are effectively a sum that's an amalgam of church hymnals, interludes, tribal songs, intelligent pop and experimental caustic indie rock that feels like an assorted day's worth [...]
Black Kites hails from New Jersey and are no stranger to Is This Revolutionary . Songs Written While Things Were Changing is the follow-up to 2009 killer LP Advancement To Ruins. SWWTWC is a nine song LP that gives hope that heavy ass hardcore isn't dead. Emotions run deep on this album, both lyrically and sonically. Jeff "Cannonball" Guerriero (he is also an independent wrestler) vocals and lyrics really reach out and grab you, (if you can catch them live you will see what I mean) the intensity and urgency of his delivery [...]

Wax Idols – No Future (2011)
Haven't we all gotten tired of that generic tinny lo-fi garage guitar sound? Upward and onward to newer and more glorious fuzz, I say. Down with the old! Appreciate the garage records of yore only for what made them good, or what was awful to the point of being interesting. The b-side rave-up is not

[mp3] Silver Tongues: "Black Kite"
As most of you no doubt have learned and forgotten, there is a local section on YANP now. So when there are local bands that I want to write about, but don't really feel that they're ready for the main page, I can stick the post there. But when a post on a small Kentucky [...]

Black Kites – Advancement To Ruins
Hey Revolutionaries! I just picked up a copy of Black Kites new lp Advancement To Ruins, and let me tell you it is not for the faint of heart. These guys are playing honest and brutal music that you would be an absolute fool for sleeping on this. Download the album for free below and help these guys out and pick up the LP. E.
