Here's a track from a new collaborative project featuring musicians from two of the best garage rock acts out there right now: Black Lips and Gentleman Jesse and His Men. The Gaye Blades' first album is out now on Norton Records , and the track "Don't Get Married" alone makes picking it up worth it. The chord progression and vocal melodies call out to rock 'n' roll's golden age-you know, a time when guys like Chuck Berry reigned supreme. However, the recording style and personality is lo-fi, filthy, and new. The song's subject matter is [...]

Atlanta brethren Gentlemen Jesse Smith and Jared Swilley of The Black Keys split songwriting duties on The Gaye Blades debut LP, released last September. It's a classic affair that puts grimy pop and punk finishes over highly melodic 1950s-inspired rock 'n' roll. As far as I can tell, the album only exists on vinyl pressed via the good folks at Norton Records, but it's well worth the near bargin bin pricing at just ten bucks. Smith's sweet power-pop chops and Swilley's antagonistic streak lend a nice one-two punch to the flow of the record, which also includes a superb cover [...]

What do you get when you combine bits of Deer Tick , Black Lips and a handful of other songwriters? One listen to the latest single by Diamond Rugs and you'll see that it's clearly a country-tinged rock effort. The band's a collaboration, and they'll be releasing their self-titled album on April 24th via Partisan Records . It's primarily the work of John McCauley of Deer Tick , but there's definitely a visible edge being added by [...]

The first question is 'what the hell is a Diamond Rug'? Well, I don't really know other than to say it's a new project from members of Deer Tick , Los Lobos , The Black Lips , and Six Finger Satellite . The eclectic collection of performers will be releasing their self-titled debut full length on April 24th. Listen to the first single " Gimme A Beer " now. Here's the track list for the record: [...]

I don't mean to be a prude when I do this, but we all had favourite albums last year, you can't deny that, and I had too many. In fact, so many that I loved that it was difficult to decide between them all, and I had been reading endless 'trendy choice' end-of-year lists before the year had even gone out. So I thought I might deliver some kind of personal justice by posting one that people can sneer at all they want, but might actually pick out something they overlooked and think "Hey, I might actually try that now, [...]

Editor's Note Happy New Year! Some of you are probably wondering what happened to us. Well work, family, and of course organizing our little (not so little anymore) variety show Snob Theater has taken quite a bit of time away from the website. We've had probably the best year so far and I'm happy to announce my favorite records of 2011 to launch the reboot of Kata Rokkar. I don't review albums at all but i do listen to a shitload and it's been a great and surprising year for new music. [...]

Omgigosh, 2011 is almost done. This is the music that got me through. Here's our best album / ep picks!!! 25. We'll continue our countdown today with songs #10 - #6. #10: Big K.R.I.T. - Country Shit (Remix ft. Ludacris and Bun B) Return of 4Eva , while Big K.R.I.T. 's true breakout album, isn't totally single-minded. For Justin Scott, the 25-year-old breakout Mississippi rapper, every southern rap anthem is met with self-conscious ones. But forgive me for not ignoring "Country Shit (Remix ft. Ludacris and Bun B)," a heavy souvenir of modern southern rap; dirty, party-minded, and as unapologetic as it is enjoyable. Rap music needs real [...]
In another special edition of our weekly Live Picks, we offer a few suggestions on where to ring in New Year's Eve in New Orleans. All shows begin on the evening of December 31, 2011 and should last well(?) into 2012. Black Lips + Jean-Eric + KG Accidental - One Eyed Jacks While One Eyed Jacks is far and away the most dependably awesome place to catch a show week in and week out, you can depend on the venerable French Quarter rock club extra hard [...]
1. Wild Flag , Wild Flag Not since 20102s Stuck On Nothing , the high-octane debut from Philadelphia power-pop quintet Free Energy , has an album rung out with the unbridled urgency and tenacity of Wild Flag 's 2011 inaugural offering. While it is practically every kind of rad and awesome and badass, there is almost nothing overtly retro-facing about the album ; an amazing - but not necessarily unbelievable - surprise considering the supergroups' clientele once so exquisitely defined a particular moment in alternative rock and roll's not-so-distant past. Instead, [...]

The following is a collection of reviews of eleven of my favourite albums of 2011, a top 11 of 2011 if you will. I'd like to note that while these releases are technically my top 11 albums, all of the songs featuring on today's program I enjoyed and encourage you to check them out (info can be found in the play list below). 1. The Black Lips – Arabia Mountain [...]

It's been a long year. Scratch that, it's been a veeerrrry long year. From social revolutions to the end of our occupation of Iraq, from the death of celebrities and dictators to a man who sneezes bullets and the mystery of planking, the world experienced a slew of emotions and all sorts of cultural and political upheaval in 2011. And that's not even counting the plethora of music news that had the blogosphere abuzz this year . So, as the question begs, what comes next? Well, 2012. If you were to believe certain [...]
John McCauley has already had quite the busy 2011, having toured and released albums with both the indie-roots super-group Middle Brother and with his longtime band Deer Tick. The singer-songwriter's latest project sees him teaming up for with Robbie Crowell (Deer Tick), Ian Saint Pé (The Black Lips), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Hardy Morris (Dead Confederate) and Bryan Dufresne (Six Finger Satellite) for another unique "super group" they've dubbed Diamond Rugs . The band will release their debut album next Spring via Partisan Records, and this past week gave a sneak preview of what's to come by [...]
