Chicago's dark wave rockers Black Math have released a fitting new video for its track "Nightshade," from its latest album Phantom Power . The mind-bending short film is a twisted and solitary stroll down a dark and desolate stretch of countryside, the very kind of scene you'd expect in some Film Noir movie. The score itself is straight out of Hitchcock with eerie cello plucks and guitar feedback. It's short, but sweet. You know, "sweet" in a kind of "haunt my dreams" kind of way.

Smith Westerns Hope everyone has a fun and frightening Halloween last weekend. Now, it looks like we're in the dog days of Autumn and the stretch run of 2010. But all that really means is it's time to gear up for some amazing shows yet to come for the Windy City! And this weekend is no different. Our picks for top weekend shows this time around include Smith Westerns at Lincoln Hall , Brendan Benson at the Bottom Lounge , Danzig at the Congress Theater [...]

One site that we really enjoy always checking out is Giant System Chicago , who offer up excellent looking and sounding video of up-and-coming Chicago bands rocking out in their own practice spaces. Well, the Empty Bottle asked Giant System to curate a show featuring some of the bands they've filmed. The rockin' lineup includes Rabble Rabble , White/Light , Black Math and Verma . Here are those band's respective Giant System Sessions: Rabble Rabble , White/Light , Black Math , Verma . [...]

Chicago noisy lo-fi, new wave outfit Black Math have released a new video for their track "Part Of Me". The Brandon Weatherbee-directed clip appears to be an old black and white western film projected on a sheet. That is, before the entire thing goes up in flames. A simple yet intriguing concept for a rambunctious, chug-a-long tune filled with reverb-laden vocals. Be sure to catch Black Math when they set the Empty Bottle aflame on Wednesday, August 11. Now, check out the video below:

Three I-can't-believe-how-many-folks -have-not-been-to-the-Empty-Bo ttle-despite-liking-music reasons to, if that is the case, go to the Empty Bottle this very evening... 1. Alabama's Thomas Function play pop music. In today's world, we'd have a tendency to slap the garage label on it but listen to it. This is good old indie pop a la a band you've never heard of but I will cite none the less, Sportsguitar. Thomas Function is the sound of guitars, bass, and drums, sometimes fuzzy, sometimes cleaner, played with pop sensibilities. It seems so simple yet alludes so many. Kudos [...]

Maybe you noticed, maybe you didn't but there was no mixtape last week. Can't exactly tell you why, but all you need to know is that this week is completely different than last. Guess it's a good thing that this particular wrap up will include tracks from more than one week, right? Starts off fast and hard like punch in the face and ends up soft and smooth while the swelling subsides. Birthday Suits - It's About Time Lovvers- Ocd Go Go Girls Black Math - Part of [...]

For Black Math , Chicago is merely a pseudonym for their dark workshop creating mutilated oddities. Rather than handing some kid an intact playtime object, Ragetty Ann/Andy is fed through a table saw while you sit and watch (it's ok to grin). "Part of Me" and it's sharp toothed ferocity is only a small taste of Black Math and their disquieting tunes. Jimmy sent these tracks over to me yesterday and are, actually, part of an ep that is up for grabs on their myspace (I thought i was special, dude!). Not to neglect their [...]

Today marks the opening of Adam Gilmore's exhibition entitled Black Math. Combining colors and shapes, Gilmore creates lasting pieces through his kaleidoscopic digital images. These would be fresh if they were blown up. Black Math opens July 11 at the Pool Gallery in Berlin and runs through August 22, 2009. via artmoco

Now I know this song is a little more mainstream than I usually post, but its an amazingly underrated track and needs to be shared. Coming from The White Stripes ' Grammy winning 2003 release Elephant , Black Math can be found on side one following the wildly successful Seven Nation Army . Receiving almost universal critical acclaim upon release, and topping many album of the year lists, Elephant landed itself on Rolling Stone 's prestigious 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, at position 390.
