Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Releases Chromewaves In an industry known for diva musicians who live for unadulterated praise, Chad VanGaalen is an anomaly. It's not as though the Calgarian took pleasure in hearing his inner circle rebuff recent attempts at making a new album, but VanGaalen definitely took the feedback in stride. "There's been like four records in between ' Soft Airplane ' and now that have kind of [...]

Black Mold Snow Blindness is Crystal Antz (2009, Flemish Eye) RIYL = Kemialliset Ystavat, Squarepusher, Dan Friel I didn't miss out on Black Mold last year due to not knowing about it. As an avid fan of all things touched by Chad VanGaalen, I was well aware of this release. Nor was it because I didn't listen to it. The album was simply too much. It absolutely overwhelmed me with the sheer volume of ideas. Honestly, even with a cursory understanding of the genuine awesomeness that popped up on [...]

Songwriter Chad VanGaalen makes an album of brief instrumental tracks using a wide variety of synthesizers and occasional acoustic instruments. His keen ear for melody keeps this record grounded and listenable. Full disclosure, right off the bat. I've never heard any of Chad VanGaalen's music in his day job as a singer/songwriter. But I really enjoyed Snow Blindness is Crystal Antz, the first album released under his electronic music alter ego, Black Mold. The press materials for the album tout its marriage of electronic sounds and acoustic instruments, and also makes a big deal about how it uses a [...]

Hope you're having a fantastic Sunday, friends. Nothing to in depth today, just a few odds and sods I wanted to share with you from the last little while. Awesome guy Matthew from Ottawa's premier blog i (heart) music went on his honeymoon this week and asked yours truly to fill in as a guest blogger for him while he was away. I was honoured to be asked, and happy to spread the word about some of the best Niagara-based music to other parts of the nation. You can check out my [...]

Ben Ritter Hospice , the much-praised new record from Brooklyn solo project turned trio The Antlers , is an exceedingly difficult listen for me. The album is built around a central narrative about a man losing a loved one to cancer and it's so successful in evoking the emotions and atmosphere around that that when I listen to it, my teeth clench and chest tightens. It's actually physically uncomfortable. Hospice accomplishes this by means both obvious and not. To the former, [...]
Artist, songwriter, and all round genius Chad VanGaalen returns under the name Black Mold - an experimental noise project with more mind-bending videos.
IGIF favorite Chad VanGaalen just released a Soft Airplane B Sides EP, now available free for download on his website . Lately, VanGaalen has taken time away from his usual pursuits to work on his electronic project Black Mold . Under that moniker, VanGaalen sounds as creepy and lovely as on anything he's done in the past under his own name, but I am glad he found time to release this 9-track collection of cuts that didn't make it onto Soft Airplane . Here is the sweet and rusty song [...]

Chad VanGaalen holed himself up in his basement to bring us the experimental album 'Snow Blindness Is Crystal Antz' under the moniker Black Mold.

Calgary singer-songwriter Chad VanGaalen specializes in quirky bedroom pop, a style which earned his 2008 album Soft Airplane a short-list nod for this year's Polaris Prize . But as fans know, his albums also feature twisted instrumental set-pieces and bizarre stylistic left-turns. Soft Airplane ended with "Frozen Energon," which was nearly four minutes of guitar feedback, pulsing synth noise and directionless drum pounding. "JC's Head on the Cross," which appeared on his debut, Infiniheart , was a similarly wonky instrumental, with barely-in-tune guitar plucking and a stuttering electro beats. [...]

THE BEATINGS-"Late Season Kids" Coming on Sept. 15, 2009, is the 6th record by Boston's The Beatings , "Late Season Kids." I have to admit, I've never heard the band before this, but they're surprisingly good. The vocals are like a young, versatile Warren Zevon, and the music is like late '90s REM. Is this a fresh or innovative musical experience? No. Does that matter? Again, no. The songs are all well written and very well performed, and the album never gets weak. All meat! No filler! [...]
