Toronto - VOTE OR DIE!!!!!!!! or go to these shows this week: TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB with Funeral Party and Penguin Prison Phoenix, October 25th I was really excited about Two Doors Cinema Club back in May, so I will just copy and paste what I wrote from back then. We have already written about this band before and the hype machine is well in effect as this Northern Irish indie pop band will bring the sweet blend of melodies to a sold out crowd at [...]

Photography by ME ! Wow! What a fun week we've been having, eh??? Well... now it's my turn! I've been a busy mammer-jammer getting my mixtape together for our Cranes Day 2 1/2 going on down in the society , as well as keeping you inundated with all kinds of mixtape fun here, but considering I'm the one who beckoned for Mixtapes Week, I knew I had to put another one together for the occasion - an occasion that seemed to catch the attention of the local [...]

Toronto - Talk about a wicked Halloween bill. Austin's The Black Angels are teaming up West coast psych-rockers Black Mountain for a date at the Phoenix as part of their The Dropout Boogie tour. The Black Angel's recently released their third psych rock album Phosphene Dream , via Blue Horizon. Check them out on Letterman here: The Black Mountain's recently released Wilderness Heart showcases a more streamlined sound (read: shorter songs) with a hard rock vibe. It's a pretty great album, which should sound great live. Luckily, we [...]

Here's the least surprising music thought of the year: the new Black Mountain record, Wilderness Heart , is best described as "bad ass" (you could describe the album cover the exact same way). While not as lengthy or as dark as their last record, Wilderness Heart might just be the heaviest this band has sounded. Almost certainly my favourite Vancouver record of 2010. Download Black Mountain - Old Fangs Black Mountain - The Hair Song The band will be [...]

"Play those death wish chords!" Most of the time, I have no Earthly idea what the hell Black Mountain are singing about. They're like old Black Sabbath on white lightning acid. It's bleak, retrorock, heavy and hard, with lyrics about pain and death and nuclear war and all kinds of things I can't understand. But I've loved this band for years. On their new release, Wilderness Heart, they continue to morph into a band with range and serious acoustic ability. If you're looking for more of the same, this is the wrong album for you. But [...]

The Corin Tucker Band Just a few new tracks and an oldie but goodie from Milemarker. Enjoy. The Corin Tucker Band - Doubt (mp3) The Thermals - I Don't Believe You (mp3) Ra Ra Riot - Boy (mp3) [...]

Joe Fuda And now, a bunch of stuff that has nothing to do with a certain record label that is now old enough to drink in the US. Starting locally, with The Rural Alberta Advantage . After one of the best and busiest 2009s on record, the trio has been relatively quiet through most of this year working on the follow-up to their debut Hometowns , as these photos (sort of) attest. But you can only keep road warriors in one place for so long and [...]

I'm not sure how many pieces I've written for Exclaim! in the past year, but it's easily in the four-digits. Still, in all of those articles, this is the first time I've written an interview for the hard copy of the paper. It's with Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean ( not the first time ) and it appears in this month's issue. I also reviewed the new album, Wilderness Heart . Here's the single "Old Fangs," which I still haven't posted. This is a [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Q + A A cursory look at Vancouver's Black Mountain would have you easily believe that you fell through a time hole that sends you back to 1974, a time where double denim is nothing to be ashamed of, where cheese and pineapple chucks on a cocktail stick are the very height of cosmopolitan sophistication and hair conditioner has yet to seize the public imagination. And while their riffs evoke the sub-industrial sludge [...]

Frank Yang When it was announced in June that The xx were not only coming back to Toronto for their fourth show in less than 10 months but doing it in a room far bigger and pricier than anything they'd done before, people thought they were mad. Now it doesn't seem like madness so much as prescience. For starters, two of those three previous shows were support slots for acts who would have had no trouble selling out even without a buzz band opening and the third was [...]

Words: Simon Opie Black Mountain - 'Wilderness Heart' (13 September) Black Mountain 's sophomore album 'In The Future' (from 2008) was one of my favorite albums of the 21st century's first decade. I think that ' Wilderness Heart ' , their third album, is even better. The songs are shorter and punchier - cynics might suggest in an attempt to sell more records [...]

When Austin City Limits closes out with a riveting performance by The Eagles, the end of the music festival season will have technically occurred, forcing music fans to wait half a year for South by Southwest to restart the whole thing again. We had some good times, though, didn't we? Well, we did, trust me (see here , here , and here ). Of course, there would be no point in writing reviews if they were all good times (see here , here , and here ). But now what? Are we [...]

Black Mountain Wilderness Heart Jagjaguwar For a band like Vancouver, longhaired throwback rockers, Black Mountain, there was really no where to go after their monolithic 2008, release, In the Future. They couldn't craft fiercer guitar riffs; They couldn't make these keyboards any creepier; They couldn't coax any more emotion out of dual vocalists Stephen McBean and Amber Weber; They couldn't push, pull, and shred the limits of prog, metal, and psychedelic rock any more without running the real risk of becoming a caricature of themselves. Hence, its follow-up, the just released [...]
We all have our weaknesses. Generally, in whatever shortcomings are present in our relationships, our professional lives, or our personal struggles, the problems are less interesting than the solutions. I know I have my faults as a music listener, and one of the biggest of these is getting too high on a record too fast. Maybe it's the desire to have as much amazing music around me as possible that causes me to jump on something I like on first listen and grab it by the neck. But this is an easy fix, because I don't review albums after the first [...]
