The Decemberists in Austin in 2011 ( more by Tim Griffin ) It's been a while since we've heard from The Decemberists , but the band's members are still finding ways to keep busy. Their side project, Black Prairie , whose lineup now includes four of the five Decemberists members (Chris Funk, Nate Query, Jenny Conlee, and John Moen -- aka everyone except Colin Meloy), released a new album this year which is a "soundtrack" for New York Times magazine [...]

Wild Ones by blackprairie Since I haven’t read Jon Mooallem's environmental novel Wild Ones , I can only tell you that Black Prairie’s soundtrack is exactly what you would expect from a band that includes four members of The Decemberists. Mooallem, also a writer for NY Times Magazine, asked the band to write the soundtrack for his imaginative wildlife epic, and the result is 27 minutes of folk-infused bluegrass, country barrel whistle-crack in’ melodies, and an homage to the accordion by phenomenally talented fellow Decemberist Jenny Conlee. According to the band’s official [...]
We already heard a new Typhoon song this morning, but there's much more Music Monday! Cold Hearted Town by The Taxpayers Local DIY punk-folk-goof-etc. band the Taxpayers have a new album on the way titled Cold Hearted Town , and and here's the opening title track, in two parts: "Cold Hearted Town Pt 1" and "Cold Hearted Town Pt 2." A rollicking, seasick-drunk jaunt with ragtime overtones, the two-parter is lively, dark, and immediately gripping—"Pt 2" in particular is really outstanding. The album comes out June 15 on CD [...]
Tonight (Thursday), Art Beat profiles Black Prairie . What began as a (mostly instrumental) side project by members of The Decemberists has grown into its own as one of Portland's bigger touring acts, playing festivals including Bonnaroo and Newport Folk Fest this year, with two records released -- including last year's fine A Tear in the Eye is a Wound in the Heart -- and a penchant for wistful, beautifully arranged folk ballads often featuring singer Annalisa Tornfelt. Jule Gilfillan produced this feature on the band, and it's showing tonight on [...]
This has been making the rounds, but it's too good not to repost. These live video performance blogs are all the rage nowadays, in which a band performs a tune or two in front of cameras and mics for an exclusive online video. You see them everywhere, but here's the inauguration of a very special site that looks to be bringing something quite new to the live-performance-video-blog game. Up in the Branches did a session with Portland's own Black Prairie in a rustic, [...]
Filed under: Video , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Jason Quigley Black Prairie is less a side project and more an exercise in compartmentalization. Multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk got antsy in between tours with the Decemberists and figured it was high time he took up the dobro. (For the uninitiated, the dobro looks a like an acoustic guitar with a steel belly, and [...]

photo by Morgen Schuler ( view set ) When every member of a band comes from other (and sometimes more commercially successful) bands, it's usually a sign that the members are either doing it as a lark or following a true passion. In the case of Portland, OR's Black Prairie , the five bandmates seem truly to be loving what they do. Comprised of three members of The Decemberists (Chris Funk, Nate Query, Jenny Conlee) plus violinist Annalisa Tornfelt (The Woolwines, Bearfoot) and guitarist Jon Neufeld (Jackstraw, Dolorean), the group draws its roots in American [...]
Last night, Portland bluegrass group Black Prairie - which features members of The Decembersists, The Woolwines and Dolorean - performed at MilkBoy Philly. Local rock 'n' roll trio Lantern headline Johnny Brenda's tonight. Self-described as "proto-biker-punk-blues," the one thing that will strike any listener upon diving into 20122s Dream Mine EP (Bathetic) for the first time is the sheer amount of blown-out fuzz and noise that distorts the classically punk vocals of front-man Zachary Devereux Fairbrother. Citing influences ... Continue reading

A Tear in the Eye is a Wound in the Heart is the second full length release from Portland, OR based Black Prairie, a band comprised of Jenny Conlee (accordion), Chris Funk (dobro) and Nate Query of The Decemberists and folk musicians Annalisa Tornfelt (vocals, fiddle, violin) and Jon Neufeld along with producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie). Black Prairie’s sound has further (and finely) evolved, culminating in an eclectic but harmonious mix of Americana, traditional bluegrass and eastern European folk sounds. Sweeping instrumental interludes space out Tornfelt’s striking country-inflected vocal laden gems, making [...]

The five folks of Black Prairie —plus auxiliary Prairie dog John Moen on drums—have a new video, for the tune "Nowhere, Massachusetts," which premiered on the American Songwriter site today. It was shot at Chris Funk's studio—and that's Funk on dobro, riffing on Lindsey Buckingham's guitar parts on Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon," apparently. Singer/violinist Annalisa Tornfelt explains the song: "I was at a gas station, trying to squeeze in a private conversation with my boyfriend on the phone before getting back into the van with the band. We were both on tour. I asked him where he was, [...]
