Five classic hip-hop songs remixed by particularly good producers. From Flying Lotus' dissection of the Lil Wayne classic from a few years back to Detroit's Ta'Raach's animating rendition of the Gangstarr track that made lemonade famous, each of these producers tease out a new dimension in the original songs. My favorite is the last one by Samiyam, definitely holding the weight of an anchor, a chilling Mobb Deep remix by Samiyam amplifies the murderous and cold sentiment of the original. Enjoy! 1. Black Rob's "Life Story" album remains one of my favorite of all time. I was at this show @ The Tunnel rockin a Pelle Pelle and a straw cowboy hat. I was so wrapped up in the thoroughness of it all, I lifted some chick on my shoulders as she donned my straw hat. Sean P shares my feelings about females in rap. The only acceptable female mc's in history are Rah Digga and MC Lyte. Otherwise, they always have been and will be gabbaj. Trigga Happy [...]

One thing Knx has a knack for aside from crafting amazing beats, is reworking songs from other artists. His sound is distinct, so when you hear these remixes it breathes new life into them and they sound like completely different songs. The past few EPs have been primarily instrumentals, but this project (aptly titled WrapTaypes.Port.1 ) is a set of hip hop remixes. I pulled out a few of my favorites here. Head over to his Bandcamp and support the man. He's out here killing it. [...]

Stephen Farris is a producer and visual artist based in Houston, Texas. He's my favorite unsigned producer at the moment, with three outstanding releases to his name that display a unique understanding of composition and form. I didn't know what to expect when he agreed to send a mix our way, but this work features a broad spectrum of influences - including a track he's made exclusively for the mix - and serves as the perfect introduction to his sound. Duck Down is kicking ass this year. Recently having seceded from the RIAA, the label managed to score 2011 releases from the venerable Pete Rock, new jack sensations Random Axe and now Black Rob. Even casual rap fans will recognize his name as a a former member of Puff Daddy's Bad Boy crew, whose "Life Story" went platinum and who served four years off a seven years sentence for grand larceny, having been released last year. Unlike many artists, Rob did his time and kept quiet. His return, "Game Tested, Streets Approved" is his first album since 20052s [...]
