Kick Kick Snare has partnered up with DC9 to bring you the best damn rock show to hit DC this spring! Don't believe me? Well let me show you the various evidence I have to prove why Spirit Animal , Black Taxi (NYC) , & Eksi Ekso are a rock trifecta of unparalleled badassery! Exhibit 1: Spirit Animals video for "Lead!" pretty much a giant bitch slap to the masses and a middle finger raised high in the directly pointed at every authority figure, [...]
Deli-rious beings, In our insanely convoluted (but SUPERBLY accurate) system governing our Year End Poll for Emerging NYC Artist, our writers have a rather influential vote. Here are the results of this specific poll (top 3 positions only). Quite unexpectedly, indie guitar-pop trio Skaters (pictured) took home the gold (the band is currently recording their debut LP, needless to say we are looking forward to it!), with the silver going to electro-pop masters St. Lucia and 10 bands getting a sliver of bronze. [...]
Photos by Meijin Bruttomesso Brooklyn’s Public Assembly heated up on January 26th with a packed show headlined by Black Taxi . The band’s consummate blend of rock heaviness, dancey beats, and Brooklyn quirkiness has launched them into national notoriety. Next week, the quartet will be relocating to Austin, Texas for February and March, where they will perform each Wednesday at The Parish, write new material for a forthcoming record, and play SXSW. Yazan and Echosuite accompanied Black Taxi for their “farewell…for [...]
Off the Avenue , presented by Consequence of Sound , is a performance-based video series show shot live at North Avenue Studios in Orange City, FL. In our latest episode, New York rockers Black Taxi perform a track from each of their two albums: "It's a Ball" off 20092s Things of That Nature and the title track from last year's We Don't Know Any Better . Watch both performances below. You can find recent Off the Avenue sessions with Minus the [...]
If you haven't seen Black Taxi live yet, then think about all the time you spent watching crappy films last year... for your own good, this band is here to show you a way out of this mess. This group belongs to an oft-ignored genre of music known as 'Punchy Cinematic Rock,' and seeing the band live is like watching performance art, a jukebox musical, and every single Nicholas Cage movie at once (so you don't have to). In other words, this band isn't afraid to try everything and get caught in the act looking good in tight [...]

Black Taxi and The Modern Electric @ Beachland Tavern - July 12 There's no doubt about it, Cleveland, Ohio is drawing the attention of independent rock and roll acts from the coasts. Thursday night brought the culmination of one such musical tryst when Brooklyn's hottest act, Black Taxi , laid down their raucous, harmony-laden, dance-punk explosion at Cleveland's Beachland Tavern. This gig was a culmination of a NYC to CLE collaboration that featured this Brooklyn based four-piece in a dual-bill with local Pop phenoms The Modern Electric . [...]
i want food, shelter, sex, money, dont be shy ♫ Black Taxi - Do What You Gotta Do If you didn't take notice when I wrote about Black Taxi 's epic SXSW set or their airtight jam "Tightrope" then this is your last warning. We Don't know Any Better is a perfect resume of Black taxi's various talents. The bouncy groovers like "Do What You Gotta Do" play well with stompers like the title track, spaced rock like "Hands" and tenderer fare like "Vultures." It;s a [...]

I went in to a fast food restaurant chain and ordered the new triple deluxe bacon monster hamburger. An acne scarred, minimum wage employee handed me the burger with a little note that said "You've been slimed." I went to my local chain grocery store and ordered some hamburger meat from the dead animal department. The burly man behind the counter smiled and wrote on the white package "You've been slimed." There is a pink, oozing, meat product that has made its way into the nation's food supply. Governors claim it is harmless. Workers claim it [...]

The penultimate day of my fourth SXSW was definitely the longest in my history of SX's. Arriving at 10:30am at the Elvis Presley-themed Beale Street Tavern to host a show, I was out on the town for 16 hours to follow. Opening the morning, Austin's Indie-meets-retro rock quartet, Ghost Bunny, and solo, blues-rock multi-instrumentalist and loop-master, Walker Lukens, got the ball rolling. Most attendants woke up and arrived for a bevy of Brooklyn bands: Black Taxi , The Courtesy Tier , and The Click Clack Boom . The string of East Coasters was broken by LA- born [...]

Holy smokes. What a day. So much great music. So much sweat coming out of so many talented pores. So much healing for my eardrums to do. Except they are gonna have to wait because we have 3 more days of madness! But enough about the future, lets take a peek at the past. Last night surprise guests Cherub kicked things off at The Firehouse Lounge with a steamy set of sexed up groove rock. Today Paula & Karol kicked things off with their boy/girl bounce-folk which The Minutes [...]

By Emilia D'Albero For the past few months, Black Taxi have been playing shows around the area to promote the release of their sophomore album, We Don’t Know Any Better . The Brooklyn natives have gotten quite good at teasing their audiences- that is, giving them bits and pieces of material from the album in order to hype their fans up for the January release. Finally, after many shows packed with loyal fans (including a sold-out Bowery Ballroom show), Black ...
On Saturday, January 14, Black Taxi celebrated their sophomore album, "We Don't Know Any Better," at Bowery Ballroom with the support of The Attic Ends , Austin's Bright Light Social Hour, Lights Resolve , in a sold out venue. Around midnight, the stage went dark, and the men of the hour snuck on stage. Illumination returned and revealed Ezra Huleatt's body paint of multi-colored hand prints and glitter, which was later sprinkled over the audience, and feathery accessories, as the band launched into an "oldie but goodie," "Don't Count Me Out." Black Taxi touched on favorites [...]

Black Taxi: We Don't Know Any Better
You'll either be let down by the lack of consistency, or you might find yourself surprised at some of the sonic twists and turns that the album takes you on. If you hail the Brooklyn-based quartet Black Taxi down, you might find yourself not going to your particular destination in the most expedient fashion possible, if you base their second full-length album We Don't Know Any Better as a guide. Instead, you'll find yourself being toured around all the salient points of interest in the annals of indie rock and '80s retro culture instead. You might be annoyed and [...]
