Well, here is part II as promised. I pared it down from six to five. I am somewhat going "out on a limb" on this one because, quite frankly, I am not very up on these bands. But, when I weeded through the new releases list for this week, these intrigued me. As I said before, I don't have the funds to buy all these albums. So, don't expect to read below a long write-up review on them. And, in some cases, I had to rely on written reviews by others to get a better understanding of the music. This [...]
...while our inbox gets more and more submissions every single day, we couldn't be happier to sort through everything when it leads us to something as rewarding as Seattle outfit Black Whales. With their debut EP Origins dropping today via the Mt...

Started with The Black Whales . As in all my Bumbershoot, the song choice will be linked to a video. My choice for the Black Whales is Young Blood . I have a pet peeve in watching bands, and singer Alex Robert was a big offender. He kept his eyes closed during the entire performance. You can not connect with an audience when you have your eyes closed. The performance is internal, and you lose us. For this [...]
Holy Fuck ::: Photo by Abbey Simmons If the first day of Bumbershoot reminded me of a renaissance festival, then the second day reminded me of last-minute shopping at your local mall. The day felt a bit odd because there was noticeably less people than on Saturday, but somehow it felt more crowded. Blame it on [...]

In addition to pondering how a person without a wristband might pass the vast expanse of the fence surrounding Memorial Stadium, something we've all done at one time or another, among Davey Brozowski's favorite Bumbershoot memories are his young self learning the power of the crowd. "I remember crowd-surfing for the first time ever [...]

The Pica Beats steal the show and my heart. The Pica Beats, a band whose sound leaves a gentle wake behind it, followed them. Often compared to The Decemberists, The Pica Beats have a majesty all their own. First, Barrett doesn't sing like he's got a mouth full of "r's". Second, his lyrics are not as narrative driven as Maloy's. Also, The Pica Beat's are more rooted in a mystical, otherworldly quality, brought on by the use of sitar. read more

All parts Oregon, Point Juncture, WA is going to rock you. Slowly. In their collectively cradled arms. And when they do, you should look at the calluses on their hands and be thankful that someone out there is working hard to provide for you. They released Heart To Elk in February 2009 on Mt. Fuji Records. read more
Seattle's annual Noise for the Needy music festival kicked off yesterday with two great local bills including Slender Means, Coulter, Skeletons With Flesh On Them, Fences and New Faces. The festival is made up of local and national acts and features shows at venues all over town including Neumos, The Comet, Chop Suey, The [...]
"Young Blood" by the Black Whales from Oneshot at the Croc Yesterday Black Whales posted a finished version of their song "Young Blood" to their myspace player . It's shiny and catchy as hell so go give it a listen. The song also made an appearance a few months ago in the One Shot at the Croc series, where bands played a song or two in the still under-construction Crocodile, and you can watch that video is above. The band's only scheduled show right now in Seattle is at the Crocodile opening [...]

Telekinesis! and Black Whales at the Tractor Tavern, Seattle | 22 October 2008 Seattle is so full of bands that there seems to be a new one each week that everyone is getting excited about, you'd think it was Brooklyn or something. While I'm not very good at predicting what band is going to be the next big thing, I would hazard a guess that either the Black Whales or Telekinesis! have pretty good odds. And as luck [...]

Black Whales at REVERBFest 2008 ::: Photo by Abbey It's a shame we've missed out on the Black Whales for these last few years. We rolled into the musty Salmon Bay Eagles following a short diversion to grab an o'so delicious Red Velvet cupcake from Cupcake Royale and were instantly regretting we hadn't arrived earlier. Melding the tightly crafted electric dance pop of Franz Ferdinand and the looser and more organic style of Elvis Costello, Black Whales were a favorite of mine during the festival. They play in Seattle next at the Tractor Tavern October [...]

Sound on the Sound has five nights of concerts in a row this week! Usually August and the weeks before Bumbershoot are slim pickings in Seattle, but not this summer. For every night we're already promised to a show, there's at least one, often two other shows that we'd also love to go to. Here's how the week is looking. Tuesday: We already told you we're heading to the Blue Moon for a special night of Acoustic Sets . Bloodhag ::: photo by [...]
