QUeUe (All photos by Chihiro Higaki) Sigh's Smell of Farewell, the Cocteau Twins tribute night at the Smell, was also a night of interesting musical collaborations, as every single performance was an amalgamation of musicians. First up was Life Group, a project featuring co-organizer Scott Cornish, and former member of Veer Right Young Pastor, members of Soft-Boiled Eggies, and current members of Devon Williams' band. They remained faithful to the original tracks instrumentally, but featured all-male vocals that lent a punkish bent to the tracks. Next was the premiere of QUeUe, a new project with members of [...]
The woozy, gravity-defying psychedelia of Diva Dompé sounds more like an artist searching for a place to land rather anybody who's arrived, but her reverb-smothered sonic explorations do make for a long, strange trip over the course of her debut album "The Glitter End" (out earlier this month on Critical Heights ). Now just doing business as Diva, the daughter of Bauhaus' Kevin Haskins has been growing from project to project since the middle part of last decade, when as a teenager she played with her sister Lola in Black Black. She was a member of the [...]
Maybe half a year ago, I was stunned and outraged to hear that one of my new favorite bands, Pocahaunted , was breaking up. The "Olsen Twins of drone," Bethany Cosentino and Amanda Brown, fused psychedelic drone with spooky chanting to the tune of about a release a month. Not all of those CDs/cassettes/vinyl were groundbreaking, but they were rarely uninteresting. Then the well seemed to dry up. From those ashes, though, have sprung two sublime bands. First, would be the resurrected phoenix that is Pocahaunted. Though they go by the same name, the group is hardly [...]
The LA electro-pop trio BlackBlack have knocked out a cracker of a song called 'Waiting for Magic'. The Passion Pit type beat, warped funk bass and Telepathe style vocals are the perfect blend for a summer smasher. This song seems to stand out from the rest of their songs, but I like their lo-fi approach. One to watch. Bob ya noggin to this... BlackBlack – Waiting For Magic /myspace

Sweet sweet news from Not Not Fun Records . There's a bit of a NNF supergroup a'brewin called Vibes that may include Amanda from Pocahaunted - we're a little head over heels for the NNF gals if you haven't noticed. Their debut cassette release, You God It , is intended "for all lovers of soul, soul funk, funk, funk rock, classic funk, and outsider funkadelics." Chris from GvB explains it best as "garage soul jams" for those with a taste for Ducktails, Pocahaunted or Sun Araw. 100 copies were made and are [...]
For those that know me as that girl with the American accent that works at American Apparel, the dream is over. I have quit the world of retail. I just thought I had some bigger purpose in life, something other than hanging clothes at an unreachable height as well as being treated as if I were Jessica Simpson. And by Jessica Simpson, I mean shit. Don't you worry, although I am unemployed and living off pasta, I do have a plan. My economics' teacher happens to be the father of the one and only gossip girl hearthrob "Ed Westwick", also [...]
Okay, so maybe this isn't a story of overnight success, but success all the same. BLACKBLACK , an LA-based trio of two sisters and one weirdo male compatriot, has been making outsider indie rock since 2005 with little notice outside of their scene. But we have a feeling that this trio could be ridiculously great outside of the Sunshine State almost immediately. The music itself is sketchy at best: all sorts of cricks and cracks, guitars that slice and slopfest bass, and each and every song is brimming with campsite witchcraft singalongs. BLACKBLACK, after rollicking for four years without [...]

Image: Michelle Caplan Some songs that won't make my 2008 list, but are still pretty awesome. Shitty Little Disco - Arms Guitars stutter then slide, keys weep, bass pogos and someone rides cymbals into the night. Music, beer and bud(s) does the body good, so tonight we're celebrating individuality in Downtown LA with our best bros Ninjasonik and extending the invites to our good pals Japanther , Lucky Dragons , Blackblack , and Funeral Party . Well after last week's posting of The Shaggs , I wondered why it was that I found that album so oddly compelling. Partly, it took that tuneless indie aesthetic to a ludicrous extreme, so I thought that might be it. Then it occurred to me that perhaps we just don't hear music that startlingly bad very often, so there was something bizarrely fascinating about it. Hearing this album, I am tempted back to the former conclusion. There is something about indie music that sounds just slightly out of key, off-rhythm and flat that really, really appeals to [...]

Black Black have me thinking of the glory days of my youth when there was nothing better than seeing my friends bands play at the local hall/garage/rec center. Here we have one part youthful energy, a dash simplicity and a dollop of halloween. Naturally a charming combination. They also seem to be fond of dressing up in costumes, which in my mind is always a plus. In addition the CD that arrived in the mail has a meticulously hand draw cover using various gel pens! 321 : Screaming Tea Party
Screaming Tea Party might be the most fun band ever, as proven by their amazing new cover of Material Girl (which you can stream below). They also might be killing megastars. "We will release a 7" single in October," explains the band's Koichi Yamanoha. " One of the songs is about Michael Jackson. We recorded it and the next day he died!" Watch out, Madonna. Check out their lovely version of Bokutachi No Shippai at our NME blog. After the jump Koichi talks cars, Tornados and terrifying buttons.
