by nashawa Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are a band I've been listening to for years. While I'm not really a fan of the style of music (Americana, Country, Bluegrass, etc), I'm definitely a fan of quality songwriting and storytelling. My dad would always play songs by them on his guitar and I know most of the words to a lot of their songs by proxy in this way. They are extremely talented at painting pictures with music, and "Black Sheep" doesn't disappoint on this front either. They will also [...]

When Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson came together as Blackie & The Rodeo Kings , they never intended the tip of the cap to Willy P. Bennett to result in a band, let alone a create a catalog that rivaled J.K. Rowling's in terms of output. It was nothing more than inspired artists reaching out to say thanks to an unheralded great, but over the last twelve years the trio has blossomed into one of Canada's finest roots outfits and their new release, Kings and Queens does nothing but justify that well-earned distinction. [...]

Back story time for all of you new to Blackie and the Rodeo Kings . Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing, Tom Wilson decided to form a Canadian roots supergroup to bring the music of Willie P Bennett to the masses. Long story short, Willie P was a staple of the Canadian folk circuit in the later 60's and 70's - you can read more about him here - but essentially his style of music influenced a lot of the Canadian music that was eaten up in the 90's (the Skydiggers and BNL owe him a big [...]

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are a Canadian roots supergroup made up of Tom Wilson, Stephen Frearing and Colin Linden. They recorded a 2 disc collection which they've released in two seperate parts. Vol 2 - Let's Frolic Again comes out in July. My first comparison I was set to make was to The Band. It should come as no surprise then that Garth Hudson is a guest on the record. For roots music that combines blues, folk, zydeco and 60's jam band this is as good as it gets. Buy songs from [...]
