Talib Kweli's Prisoner of Conscious is a play on both his own reputation as a socially conscious rapper and on the term "prisoner of conscience" created by Peter Buchanan in his 1961 London Observer article "The Forgotten Prisoners." That article became a rallying cry of sorts for organizations committed to eliminating imprisonment based on race, religion, or political views. Kweli is well known for his politics, having been a vocal contributor to the Occupy Wall Street movement, while keeping his Twitter followers abreast of his latest social [...]

As part of our ongoing look at the release history of some of our favorite labels , we jumped headfirst into the albums and compilations that dropped during Rawkus Records' two-part tenure. From 1996-2002, the label helped push some of the finest talent in the New York rap scene with a strongly independent ethos. While damn near everyone else was busy trying to fit into the Jiggy Era, the Rawkus roster stuck to their boom-bap-infused guns and pushed the genre's boundaries with raw and often innovative albums. Although Rawkus would partially dissolve in [...]

Black Stars ' love for rock 'n' roll is eminent in their music, but the local four-piece is certainly not afraid to bring the funk to get the party started. The band also brought their A-game to our recent Feature Artist(s) Poll, and emerged victorious. You can learn more about the group from our interview with Black Star's lead vocalist/guitarist Nik Greeley, which you can read HERE . Raise Your Soul by Black Stars
San Francisco's Stone Foxes are one heckuva rock and roll band. They recently released a new album, Small Fires that's filled with big rock riffs, bluesy bolts of swagger and excellent songs. You like the Black Crowes? Then these guys are the next new band you need to check out. They headline Milkboy Philly this ... Continue reading

New York experimental rock band Psychic Ills headline Johnny Brenda's tonight. The psychedelic-infused outfit recalls the distorted and distressed, laidback sound of early Kurt Vile with lo-fi vocals and hypnotic arrangements that seem on the verge of exploding. Psychic Ills will be releasing One Track Mind on February 19th via Sacred Bones Records, following up ... Continue reading

K.I.D.S. is the Stockholm/London combo of Swedish singer Rosanna and British instrumentalist Charles. Their sound is glossy synth-pop with strong production and simmering vocals. The duo have been hard at work since the middle of last year on their debut album that should hopefully see the light of day sometime this year. In the meantime, the band has been releasing some loose singles to hold us over until then. MOKB got our hands on one of the songs, "Black Star", and are excited to offer it up for download below. The [...]
Philly rockers Satellite Hearts played a set at Norristown's Walla Fest recently, psyching out to songs from their recent Imperial Green LP and sharing two new songs with the enthusiastic crowd, "Fearless Freaks" and "Fools Gold." The tracks highlight the best of Satellite Hearts, with a rousing instrumental jam, anchored by bassist Lucas Rinz's driving ... Continue reading

In a recent Rolling Stone feature, Talib Kweli revealed the release date for his forthcoming solo project, and also denied any plans of a new Black Star album. The good news, I suppose, is that we can expect Prisoner of Conscious to drop April 23. That album is set to feature Kendrick Lamar, Nelly, Busta Rhymes and more. The sad news, though, is that we still don't have any word on whether or not we can expect Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey to be getting together to release a second Black Star album. It appears individual commitments have [...]
Now that our best of 2012 lists are completed and behind us, it's time to look to the coming year. Welcome to our roundup of the most anticipated albums of 2013, which features a nice mix of albums both confirmed and rumored to drop. Of course, we tried to keep the latter of those to a minimum, but we couldn't pass up making some comments about, say, Jay Electronica's probably-never-being-released Act II . We couldn't fit all of those rumored releases on here, however, because then we would just be going on and on about albums [...]

Mister Cee paid tribute to one of Hip Hop's most beloved groups yesterday when he put together the best of Black Star mix. It's a weekly series that Cee does every Tuesday on Hot 97, picking one artist or group each week, and blending together prized works from their catalog. This week it was the "best alliance in Hip Hop" that got the best of treatment. Since Black Star only really has one album and a handful of loosies and b-sides, the mix also includes solo cuts from each artist. Peep it below.
Every Tuesday, Mister Cee hops on Hot 97 and throws together a "Best Of" mix of some of his favorite acts. Yesterday, he spun together some of the best work of Black Star , aka Talib Kweli and Mos Def . That means you'll hear cuts from their tracks together, solo efforts, and guest features. Yeah, I know what I'm listening to for the next 58 minutes. Listen below. [ via ]
