by edinita krauss We've got a multi-media pack for you this week, starting with the above video for Lo-Fi-Fnk's "Marching In" - A good "get up and make a drink" track to move you through the winter night. The video be Mattias Erik Johansson and Isak Martinsson is also aquatically fresh. ► I can't ever get enough of These Are Powers because once you see them live you become a fan for life. I've tabbed "Easy Answers" as our stubborn reply to seasonal affective laziness this [...]
Collaborations are all the rage these days. A lot of groups are shedding this idea of the act as an insular band of brothers, them against the world and all that hokum and instead are recognising the need to keep things fresh and interesting. Many artists, therefore, have reached the consensus that there is no better way to do this than to get out there and play with others. Unfortunately, the words 'super' and 'group' were found to rhyme, thus giving rock hacks like me a quick one-two to categorise any act whose members were assorted and famous in their [...]

Ohio-based blues/rock band The Black Keys teams up with a slew of hiphop artists to bring us Blakroc. Bit late to the game on this one, but I love the sound. Something in the realm of the Gorillaz. Enjoy. Blakroc, 'What You Do To Me (feat. Billy Danze, Jim Jones & Nicole Wray)', (2009)
The Little One let the cat out of the bag so to speak...but I have been dying to tell you about Blakroc. This little band from Ohio called The Black Keys is made up of two dudes named Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney. They love hip hop, the blues, and make some of the most interesting rock music I have heard. Damon Dash, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella records, happens to be a fan of The Black Keys. Well he is now. He was a little late to the party. Here is how he explains how he became [...]
Post from: The Galley Boys Blakroc Behind the Scenes on Jimmy Fallon
Mos Def, The Black Keys, Jim Jones perform as BlakRoc on Letterman
The RZA and BlakRoc perform on Fallon at NBC studios.

New Years in New Orleans and the days that followed: - It's unseasonably cold while we are down there, so a lot of backyard campfires are sought out. - Naked group hot-tubbing on New Year's Day at the Country Club. - Several Sissy Bounce performances by Vockah Redu and his dancers as well as Big Freedia at the closing party for New Orleans Airlift group exhibition. - Trying to visit Plan B and [...]

Still buggs me out how he tied the F.O.I, Nicholas Telsa and Mgmt together. Actually, the most bugged out thing is that Jay Electronica puts a Ancient Moorish Science Fez on Diddy's head. You gotta feel the "We Love Haiti" chants before Jay sets it off.

I realize I am putting this out really late. I always put this off until winter break, thinking I'll have tons of time to listen to the albums, but always underestimate how much I actually need to listen to. But honestly, that isn't a bad thing. I think we are living in a time where there is a lot more new and interesting stuff coming out than ever before. Last year, I probably listened to about 75 albums for my top albums article. Some of them only half way through (because I could tell they wouldn't make the cut) and [...]
Pairing hip-hop with rock and roll dates as far back at least to Run DMC and Aerosmith's "Walk this Way" but presently the idea runs the risk of turning into something akin to the Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock school of rap-rock, which mercifully appears to have run its course in popular music. Thankfully, that's not at all the case with Blakroc because The Black Keys truly transform into a tight, aggressive and authentic hip-hop session band rather than a rock band trying to fake its way through a forced genre shift. [...]
BlakRoc - "What You Do To Me" from the 2009 self-released self-titled album.

This year I though I should at least describe some of the tracks of the year, but without falling into just using amazing, awesome, outstanding etc. Brother Sport by Animal Collective is the greatest song ever. I say this with all sincerity. I'm wrestling with myself to make a songs of the decade list, and this would very likely be number one. After their album collected virtual dust on my hard drive, it came up on shuffle and made me immediately listen to the rest of Animal Collective's eighth [...]

Welcome to the future! It's 2010! No, this isn't the cutting edge bands list. We still have to do songs of 2009, remixes of 2009 and the albums of the decade list. Until then, I wanted to do a quick breather post (no, that's not what the last two weeks have been for). I bought and received more records than I ever have on one of my trips (Munich CDs are ridiculously expensive). So here are just three really cool songs. I actually bought this album randomly after putting it on the "listen to later so I can [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive Do you have big New Year's Eve plans? Are you going to ring the new decade with a concert or party? Well, come New Year's Day -- America's adopted National Hangover Day -- you'll be thinking those plans were a bad idea when the headache kicks in and you can barely make a fist. Jan 1, 2010 may find you on a couch -- or worse -- thinking, "Maybe I shouldn't have chased that bottle of champagne with half a bottle of Jameson." [...]

I'm no expert here. I'm simply and honestly telling you the songs that I loved this past year - polls, charts, blogs, magazines aside. I avoided adding/removing songs just to reach some practical number, so there are only 24. Here we go with the very subjective and biased Top 24 Songs of 2009! 24. 'This God Damn House' - The Low Anthem Ok, so yes this is a 2007 song, but this version is from the August HearYa Live Sessions . I watched Ben Knox Miller [...]
Indie stalwarts Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear hit high-water marks with great albums this year. Yeah Yeah Yeahs went electronic and Flaming Lips darkened its sound. Super groups just kept popping up (Them Crooked Vultures, Dead Weather, Blakroc). As I look at my top albums of the year (to be released later this week), I'm surprised how many are by veteran artists despite all the great debuts by exciting new bands. Here are some of my favorite songs by the vets. [...]
Mos Def - Quiet Dog Bite Hard Mos Def - Quiet Dog Bite Hard Ah, the best song category. Even though my choices were limited to hip-hop, I had a nearly impossible time compiling this list and selecting a victor. In the end, I narrowed the short-list down to the songs that got progressively better with each listen [...]
