in terms of song as summation, of man / myth, lucinda williams' drunken angel nails it. buncha verses that get to the core of blaze foley and his fucked cosmology (but hell could have been written about van zandt or hank williams, steve earle or johnny cash in the depths of their respective artistic highs/personal voids). some kind of saviour singing the blues / a derelict in your duct tape shoes / your orphan clothes and long dark hair / looking like you didn't care / drunken angel [...]

While the name Blaze Foley may not be recognized by many, his songs have been covered by the likes of Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett & John Prine. For those who want to get acquainted with Foley's work, a good place to start would be "Clay Pigeons", a collection recently released by Secret Seven Records . From the label: "Secret Seven Records is proud to present Blaze Foley: Clay Pigeons, a (vinyl-only) career-spanning collection of studio, home and intimate live recordings from 1976 - 1988. Culled from posthumous CDs released by [...]

Note from AIV : Otis approached me about this post and I thought it was a great idea and I hope to make it a reoccurring piece here on 9B. Hope you enjoy. As a traveling musician, I'm given countless CDs from people I meet on the road. I have no interest in being a music critic, but I try my best to listen to as many as I can. In the spirit of turning people on to good music, this is a list of three [...]

Morlix pays tribute to an old friend, with impressive results. When Blaze Foley was shot to death in 1989 at the age of 39, little if any of his music was in print. He and his songs left enough of an impression that John Prine covered "Clay Pigeons" and Merle Haggard recorded "If I Could Only Fly". He also inspired songs like Lucinda Williams' "Drunken Angel", Townes Van Zandt's "Blaze's Blues", and Gurf Morlix's "Music You Mighta Made". On Blaze Foley's 113th Wet Dream, Morlix...
In 1989, Foley was shot to death in the streets of Austin, TX while defending his friend Concho January. A documentary of Foley's life has been in the works for several years and is finally set to be released. Below is a trailer for the documentary and a few Foley songs that I really enjoy. I hope you will too. Blaze Foley (trailer) from David Hobizal on Vimeo . Mp3's: [...]
Carey Ott's new 20-song opus, almost an hour and quarter of genre-coasting pop-rock, feels like a concept album—except the concept is the human experience.

( Sad Songs & Waltzes is a recurring feature on Muzzle of Bees, where artists share their favorite sad songs. Previous contributors include Megafaun , Delta Spirit , Damien Jurado , Conrad Plymouth , Frontier Ruckus , and Roadside Graves .) By Ben Weaver : One morning my son said to me, "Dad, when you are sleeping you can see your dreams." Sad things make me happy, and happy things make me cry, and crying does not always mean I am sad. So what [...]

"There's kind of two Blazes. A lot of people saw one or the other. There was the wild one. . . . And then there was the gentle, loving, caring one. I got to know both." ~ Townes Van Zandt Over the years of doing ninebullets, I've had the occasional emailer ask me if I'd ever heard of Blaze Foley. One was even so kind as to email me a collection of Blaze's songs. These emails were the first I'd ever heard of the man, but it's been [...]

Blaze Foley The first Blaze Foley song I ever heard was Merle Haggard's cover of "If I Could Only Fly" (the song also served as the title track on Haggard's 2000 release on Anti- Records). "If I Could Only Fly" just plain stopped me dead in my tracks. I first thought that Merle Haggard had penned a new modern classic but it wasn't until I scanned through the album's liner notes that I discovered that Blaze Foley was the song's author. (I would also [...]

... is a quote from Townes van Zandt about his friend Blaze Foley (real name Michael David Fuller), Blaze is a guy whose music I came across through his links to Townes, one of those legendary larger than life characters, he died tragically in 1989 after being shot when coming to the aid of a friend who was under violent attack from his son, at the subsequent trial the son was found not guilty of murder in the first degree on the grounds of self-defence. All but one of the album releases - [...]

So having had a blog for while without actually posting anything, here's my first foray into the murky & subversive world of blogging. Recently I've been listening to quite a lot of non-studio music, live shows, radio performances, that kind of thing, I still find it enlightening how certain tracks I never rated highly suddenly jump out as being masterpieces when heard live. It may be a mood thing? maybe to my ears the lyrics get diluted [...]

Written about Ronald Reagan in the early 80's by the late Blaze Foley, "Oval Room" sure is just as fitting today as it was 25 years ago, isn't it? I was catching up on some recorded episodes of Austin City Limits this afternoon, and came across a goldmine: a repeat of the John Prine / Amos Lee episode that aired about 2 years ago. It was John's version of "Clay Pigeons" that really affected me, and led me to the original songwriter, Blaze Foley. I wrote about that day here . I checked YouTube back then for the Prine ACL version, but no go. And today, after seeing John's amazing performance again, I checked again, and lo and behold, here it is. [...]
