Rick, When I helped Porkchop make Fry Pharmacy, we paid royalties to Johnny Cash for Delia's Gone. Now, I realize it's a much older tune. I haven't done a huge amount of research on it, but it may all come from Alphonso "Blind Blake" Blake Higgs. I have a Josh White songbook that says Josh started playing it in 1939. Youtube has several other covers. Thought you might enjoy Alphonso's version recorded in the 50's. [...]

Whistler's Jug Band, date unknown Blind Blake : He's in the Jailhouse Now [ purchase ] On February 15, 1928, Jimmie Rodgers went into the studio and recorded In the Jailhouse Now. The song became a country classic. Webb Pierce would later take the song to #1, and Johnny Cash also recorded it, among many others. For a tribute album to Jimmie Rodgers, the song was recorded by Steve Earle. All of which is fine, but there's one little problem. Jimmie [...]
December is almost over. Across all forms of media, the next week will be filled with cloying fits of nostalgia, hindsight-enriched wistfulness, and even some good-old-fashioned navel-gazing. Each Friday this month Swan Fungus has concluded the week with a new year-end list. Last week was The Top Negative Reader Comments, and before that was Top Ten Top Ten Lists of 2009. Next week: The Top 100 Albums of 2008. Stay tuned! I thought last year was an insane year for deaths. I mean, seriously, almost my entire top ten list died before the month of March ended. That [...]

Three inner-city kids "case the joint" before committing theft at a local Best Buy. • The New York Times has finally hopped aboard the "vinyl records and turntables are gaining sales" bandwagon. Is it just me, or does it seem like every six months another major news source is claiming that people are reclaiming vinyl as their music format of choice? Each time I read one of these pieces, I die a little inside. For every article mentioning gains in vinyl sales, there is one more industry executive wondering how to make more money off it. [...]

Scott Joplin - Maple Leaf Rag ( buy ) (pub. 1899) According to Wikipedia, "Ragtime (alternately spelled Ragged-time) is an originally American musical genre which enjoyed its peak popularity between 1897 and 1918. It began as dance music in the red-light districts of American cities such as St. Louis and New Orleans years before being published as popular sheet music for piano. It was a modification of the march made popular by John Philip Sousa , with additional polyrhythms coming from African music. The ragtime composer Scott Joplin became famous through the publication [...]

Blind Blake & his Guitar - He's in the Jailhouse Now , Paramount Records 12565, 1927.

Blind Blake recorded about 80 tracks for Paramount Records in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He was one of the most accomplished guitarists of his genre with a surprisingly diverse range of material. He is best known for his distinct guitar sound that was comparable in sound and style to a ragtime piano. ( via ) "Police Dog Blues" - Blind Blake (1929)
According to wikipedia; Country blues (also folk blues, rural blues, backwoods blues, or downhome blues) refers to all the acoustic, guitar-driven forms of the blues. The big Y-man, Danny's roommate, could fill a book with his knowledge of ragtime and classical music. Let's see what he has to say: Seaboard Stomp -- Blind Arthur Blake This is from an original recording from the early twentieth century by "The King of Ragtime Guitar." Blind Blake was born around 1893 and died about 1933. I love this song because it is an artifact from the past and fascinating to hear how [...]

Blind Blake has the right stuff, you know the stuff that I am talking about. And the real amazing thing about him is that he is not on everybody's radar. I have to admit that I came to his music a little late in my blues education. It was not until I really started digging into the blues and the guitar work of some of the founders of the blues that I came across his music. It is a kind of ragtime for guitar, and it is good. Check it out. You can [...]
